Abstract: Indium phosphide colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are emerging as an efficient cadmium-free alternative for optoelectronic applications. Recently, syntheses based on easy-to-implement aminophosphine precursors have been developed. We show by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy that this new approach allows oxide-free indium phosphide core or core/shell quantum dots to be made. Importantly, the oxide-free core/shell interface does not help in achieving higher luminescence efficiencies. We demonstrate that in the case of InP/ZnS and InP/ZnSe QDs, a more pronounced oxidation concurs with a higher photoluminescence efficiency. This study suggests that a II-VI shell on a III-V core generates an interface prone to defects. The most efficient InP/ZnS or InP/ZnSe QDs are therefore made with an oxide buffer layer between the core and the shell: it passivates these interface defects but also results in a somewhat broader emission line width.

Abstract: This paper investigates energy filtering in silicon nanowires and nanosheets by resonant electron tunneling through a geometric superlattice. A geometric superlattice is any kind of periodic geometric feature along the transport direction of the nanowire or nanosheet. Multivalley quantum-transport simulations are used to demonstrate the manifestation of minibands and minibandgaps in the transmission spectra of such a superlattice. We find that the presence of different valleys in the conduction band of silicon favors a nanowire with a rectangular cross section for effective energy filtering. The obtained energy filter can consequently be used in the source extension of a field-effect transistor to prevent high-energy electrons from contributing to the leakage current. Self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson simulations in the ballistic limit show minimum subthreshold swings of 6 mV/decade for geometric superlattices with indentations. The obtained theoretical performance metrics for the simulated devices are compared with conventional III-V superlatticeFETs and TunnelFETs. The adaptation of the quantum transmitting boundary method to the finite-element simulation of 3-D structures with anisotropic effective mass is presented in Appendixes A and B. Our results bare relevance in the search for steep-slope transistor alternatives which are compatible with the silicon industry and can overcome the power-consumption bottleneck inherent to standard CMOS technologies. Abstract: The orientation relationships (ORs), segregation behavior and morphologies of beta precipitate in an over aged Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy are systematically characterized by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). Six different ORs and two morphologies, i.e. rod-and lath-like are revealed for beta precipitates, and Cu segregation at the (beta/alpha-Al interface is observed in all these precipitates. The rod-like beta precipitate has multiple beta-angles ranging from 6.1 to 14.1 degrees and non-uniform Cu segregation at the (beta/alpha-Al interface, while the lath-like beta precipitate has a constant beta-angle of 0 degrees and a periodic Cu segregation. These different ORs are explained to be attributable to the rotation of QP lattice, a near-hexagonal network of Si columns formed within beta precipitates, which causes different lattice matching of beta with alpha-Al lattice. These findings provide new insights in controlling the precipitation hardening and mechanical properties of this type of alloys. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We have investigated the effect of two different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on electrical characteristics of bilayer graphene (BLG)/n-Si Schottky diodes. Novel 4“bis(diphenylamino)-1, 1':3”-terpheny1-5' carboxylic acids (TPA) and 4,4-di-9H-carbazol-9-y1-1,1':3'1'-terpheny1-5' carboxylic acid (CAR) aromatic SAMs have been used to modify n-Si surfaces. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) results have been evaluated to verify the modification of n-Si surface. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of bare and SAMs modified devices show rectification behaviour verifying a Schottky junction at the interface. The ideality factors (n) from ln(I)-V dependences were determined as 2.13,1.96 and 2.07 for BLG/n-Si, BLG/TPA/n-Si and BLG/CAR/n-Si Schottky diodes, respectively. In addition, Schottky barrier height (SBH) and series resistance (Rs) of SAMs modified diodes were decreased compared to bare diode due to the formation of a compatible interface between graphene and Si as well as n-n interaction between aromatic SAMs and graphene. The CAR-based device exhibits better diode characteristic compared to the TPA-based device. Computational simulations show that the BLG/CAR system exhibits smaller energy-level-differences than the BLG/TPA, which supports the experimental findings of a lower Schottky barrier and series resistance in BLG/CAR diode. Abstract: Multishell carbon nanotubules are studied by means of diffraction contrast dark field images. This results in an electron microscopy method for the determination of the sign of the chiral angles in carbon nanotubes. The method is justified by a reasoning either in direct space or in diffraction space. We also investigate a carbon nanotubule exhibiting a bend and we confront the observations with the heptagon-pentagon pair model.

Abstract: Nd-YAG QS laser cleaning of soiled stone at 1064 nm can sometimes result in a more yellow appearance compared to other cleaning techniques. Especially in France, this yellowing effect is still considered as a major aesthetic issue by the architects and conservators. One explanation states that the yellowing is linked to the formation of iron-rich nanophase(s) through the laser beam interaction with black crusts that would re-deposit on the cleaned substrate after irradiation. To characterize these nanophases, a model crust containing hematite was elaborated and laser irradiated using a Nd-YAG QS laser. The color of the sample shifted instantaneously from red to a bright yellow and numerous particles were ablated in a visible smoke. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine the morphology and the crystallinity of the neo-formed compounds, both on the surface of the samples and in the ablated materials. In addition, an investigation of the chemical and structural properties of the nanophases was conducted by X-ray dispersive energy (EDX) and electron energy loss (EELS) spectroscopies. It was found that both the surface of the sample and the ablated materials are covered by crystallized nano-spheres and nano-residues, all containing iron and oxygen, sometimes along with calcium and sulfur. In particular an interfacial area containing the four elements was evidenced between some nanostructures and the substrate. Magnetite Fe3O4 was also identified at the nanoscale. This study demonstrates that the laser yellowing of a model crust is linked to the presence of iron-rich nanophases including CaxFeySzOδ nanostructures and magnetite Fe3O4 at the surface after irradiation.

Abstract: This paper aims to review the impacts of drought on agricultural land conversion (ALC) on the one hand and the impacts of ALC on intensifying drought on the other. The paper further investigates coping strategies at three levels; i.e., micro (local), meso (national), and macro (international), in order to mitigate drought impacts that are classified as economic, social, and environmental. This paper shows that ALC, drought and coping strategies are in a reciprocal relationship and can have either a positive or negative influence on each other. The paper concludes that the complex and multidimensional nature of drought requires the development of an integrated approach that focuses on the governments collaboration with different stakeholders. Such an integrated approach can improve drought risk management implementations, decrease vulnerability and construct resilience and coping capacity at all levels in order to deal with droughts.

Abstract: Companies dealing with chemical products have to cope with large amounts of waste and environmental risk due to the use and production of toxic substances. Against this background, increasing attention is being paid to green chemistry and the translation of this concept into biobased chemicals. Given the multitude of economic, environmental and societal impacts that the production and use of biobased chemicals have on sustainability, assessment approaches need to be developed that allow for measurement and comparison of these impacts. To evaluate sustainability in the context of policy and decision-making, indicators are generally accepted means. However, sustainability indicators currently predominantly exist for low-value applications in the bioeconomy, like bioenergy and biofuels. In this paper, a review of the state-of-the-art sustainability indicators for biobased chemicals is conducted and a gap analysis is performed to identify indicator development needs. Based on the analysis, a clear hierarchy within the concept of sustainability is found where the environmental aspect dominates over economic and social indicators. All one-dimensional indicator-sets account for environmental impacts (50%), whereas two-dimensional sets complement the environmental issues with economic indicators (34%). Moreover, even the sets encompassing all three sustainability dimensions (16%) do not account for the dynamics and interlinkages between the environment, economy and society. Using results from the literature review, an indicator list is presented that captures all indicators currently used within sustainability assessment of biobased chemicals. Finally, a framework is proposed for future indicator selection using a stakeholder survey to obtain a prioritized list of sustainability indicators for biobased chemicals.

Abstract: The development of sustainability criteria and indicators is necessary to assess the current management and to recognize appropriate management approaches towards sustainable forest management (SFM). The aim of this study is to assess the sustainability of current management in the Dopolan community forest and assess alternative management scenarios towards SFM. To this end, we applied multi criteria analysis which consists of three steps: a) developing a primary set of criteria and indicators (C&Is) on focus groups discussions, b) finalizing and weighing the set of C&Is, applying a pair wise comparison as well as ranking method, and c) assessing the current forest management regimes and alternative scenarios against a set of C&Is. As a result, 8 criteria and 40 indicators were selected. Our results indicated that to achieve SFM, the criteria including forest protection against natural and human factors, the establishment of appropriate legal and institutional requirements and socioeconomic functions of forests, are the most important criteria (weighted 14.60%, 14.28% and 13.96%, respectively). Assessing the current management regimes revealed that the criteria consisting of biodiversity conservation and local communities' awareness have the maximum distance to SFM (weighted 7.75% and 9.18%, respectively). Among the alternative forest management scenarios, the sixth scenario namely conservation and rehabilitation, local investment attraction in forest conservation and rehabilitation, enabling and capacity building of forest inhabitants were realized as the best scenarios (weighted 26.20%) to achieve SFM. A joint effort of the concerned government forestry officials and local people is needed to enhance the sustainability of all community based forestry models.
