Abstract: Samples of the secondary uranium minerals collected in the abandoned uranium mine at Pecs (Hungary) were investigated by two micro-techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX) and micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS). They were applied to locate U-rich particles and identify the chemical form and oxidation state of the uranium compounds. The most abundant mineral was a K and/or Na uranyl sulphate (zippeite group). U(VI) was also present in the form showing intensive Raman scattering at 860 cm−1 which can be attributed to uranium trioxide. This research has shown the successful application of micro-Raman spectroscopy for the identification of uranyl mineral species on the level of individual particles.

Abstract: The effect of a metallic gate on the bound states of a shallow donor located near the gate is studied. We calculate the energy spectrum as a function of the distance between the metallic gate and the donor and find an anti-crossing behavior in the energy levels for certain distances. We show how a transverse electric field can tune the average position of the electron with respect to the metallic gate and the impurity.

Abstract: We evaluate the electronic transmission and conductance in bilayer graphene through a finite number of potential barriers. Further, we evaluate the dispersion relation in a bilayer graphene superlattice with a periodic potential applied to both layers. As a model we use the tight-binding Hamiltonian in the continuum approximation. For zero bias the dispersion relation shows a finite gap for carriers with zero momentum in the direction parallel to the barriers. This is in contrast to single-layer graphene where no such gap was found. A gap also appears for a finite bias. Numerical results for the energy spectrum, conductance, and the density of states are presented and contrasted with those pertaining to single-layer graphene.

Abstract: The metal-insulator (MI) transition in epitaxial thin films of La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 (LCMO) is accompanied by the appearance of an intrinsic electrical nonlinearity. The latter, probed by electrical third harmonic voltage, U3, or resistance, R3=dU3/dJ, is drastically enhanced in the vicinity of the MI transition, TMI=267 K. Applied magnetic field, B=5 T, suppresses the nonlinearity, resulting in a huge nonlinear CMR3(TMI)~105%. R3 shows a peculiar low-frequency (1 kHz) dependence, R3~(-0)n, with exponent, n, changing across the MI transition from n~1,52 for TTMI to n=1 (T<TMI). The observed electrical nonlinearity in LCMO reflects the behavior of correlated polarons, the number of which dramatically enhances in the vicinity of TMI. We argued that correlated polarons, considered as electric-elastic quadrupoles, provide a nonlinear (quadratic) coupling to the electric field, yielding a third harmonic electric nonlinearity in LCMO. The reference film of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO), a prototypic double exchange system with second-order phase transition, is characterized as a linear metallic material in the whole range of temperatures (T=10400 K), magnetic fields (B=05 T), and frequencies (=11000 Hz).

Abstract: An optimized laser ablation setup, proposed for high repetition rate inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) analyses such as 2D imaging or depth profiling, is presented. For such applications, the particle washout time needs to be as short as possible to allow high laser pulse frequencies for reduced analysis time. Therefore, it is desirable to have an ablation setup that operates as a laminar flow reactor (LFR). A top-down strategy was applied that resulted in the present design. In the first step, a previously applied ablation setup was analyzed on the basis of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results presented by D. Autrique et al. (Spectrochim. Acta, B 2008, 63, 257−270). By means of CFD simulations, the design was modified in such a way that it operated in the LFR regime. Experimental results demonstrate that the current design can indeed be regarded as an LFR. Furthermore, the operation under LFR conditions allowed some insight into the initial radial concentration distribution if the experimental ICPMS signal and analytical expressions are taken into account. Recommendations for a modified setup for more resilient spatial distributions are given. With the present setup, a washout time of 140 ms has been achieved for a 3% signal area criterion. Therefore, 7 Hz repetition rates can be applied with the present setup. Using elementary formulas of the analytical model, an upper bound for the washout times for similar setups can be predicted. The authors believe that the presented setup geometry comes close to the achievable limit for reliable short washout times.

Abstract: In this paper, an overview is given of different modeling approaches used for describing gas discharge plasmas, as well as plasma-surface interactions. A fluid model is illustrated for describing the detailed plasma chemistry in capacitively coupled rf discharges. The strengths and limitations of Monte Carlo simulations and of a particle-in-cell-Monte Carlo collisions model are explained for a magnetron discharge, whereas the capabilities of a hybrid Monte Carlo-fluid approach are illustrated for a direct current glow discharge used for spectrochemical analysis of materials. Finally, some examples of molecular dynamics simulations, for the purpose of plasma-deposition, are given.

Abstract: The atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge in helium is a pulsed discharge in nature. If during the electrical current pulse a glow discharge is reached, then this pulse will last only a few microseconds in operating periods of sinusoidal voltage with lengths of about 10 to 100 µs. In this paper we demonstrate that right before a glow discharge is reached, the discharge very closely resembles the commonly assumed Townsend discharge structure, but actually contains some significant differing features and hence should not be considered as a Townsend discharge. In order to clarify this, we present calculation results of high time and space resolution of the pulse formation. The results indicate that indeed a maximum of ionization is formed at the anode, but that the level of ionization remains high and that the electric field at that time is significantly disturbed. Our results also show where this intermediate structure comes from.

Abstract: The interaction of thermal and hyperthermal Ni ions with gas-phase C60 fullerene was investigated at two temperatures with classical molecular dynamics simulations using a recently developed interatomic many-body potential. The interaction between Ni and C60 is characterized in terms of the NiC60 binding sites, complex formation, and the collision and temperature induced deformation of the C60 cage structure. The simulations show how ion implantation theoretically allows the synthesis of both endohedral Ni@C60 and exohedral NiC60 metallofullerene complexes.

Abstract: The effects of amorphous layers on the quality of exit wave restorations have been investigated. Two independently developed software implementations for exit wave restoration have been used to simulated focal series of images of SrTiO3 with amorphous carbon layers incorporated. The restored exit waves have been compared both qualitatively and quantitatively. We have shown that amorphous layers have a strong impact on the quantitative measurements of atomic column positions, however, the error in the position measurements is still in the picometer range.

Abstract: On several paintings of James Ensor (1860−1949), a gradual fading of originally bright yellow areas, painted with the pigment cadmium yellow (CdS), is observed. Additionally, in some areas exposed to light, the formation of small white-colored globules on top of the original paint surface is observed. In this paper the chemical transformation leading to the color change and to the formation of the globules is elucidated. Microscopic X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (ì-XANES) experiments show that sulfur, originally present in sulfidic form (S2−), is oxidized during the transformation to the sulfate form (S6+). Upon formation (at or immediately below the surface), the highly soluble cadmium sulfate is assumed to be transported to the surface in solution and reprecipitates there, forming the whitish globules. The presence of cadmium sulfate (CdSO4·2H2O) and ammonium cadmium sulfate [(NH4)2Cd(SO4)2] at the surface is confirmed by microscopic X-ray diffraction measurements, where the latter salt is suspected to result from a secondary reaction of cadmium sulfate with ammonia. Measurements performed on cross sections reveal that the oxidation front has penetrated into the yellow paint down to ca. 1−2 ìm. The morphology and elemental distribution of the paint and degradation product were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy-dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) and synchrotron radiation based micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (SR ì-XRF). In addition, ultraviolet-induced visible fluorescence photography (UIVFP) revealed itself to be a straightforward technique for documenting the occurrence of this specific kind of degradation on a macroscale by painting conservators.

Abstract: A combination of synchrotron radiation based X-ray microscopic techniques (ì-XRF, ì-XANES, ì-XRD) applied on single depleted uranium (DU) particles and semi-bulk leaching experiments has been employed to link the potential bioavailability of DU particles to site-specific particle characteristics. The oxidation states and crystallographic forms of U in DU particles have been determined for individual particles isolated from selected samples collected at different sites in Kosovo and Kuwait that were contaminated by DU ammunition during the 1999 Balkan conflict and the 1991 Gulf war. Furthermore, small soil or sand samples heavily contaminated with DU particles were subjected to simulated gastrointestinal fluid (0.16 M HCl) extractions. Characteristics of DU particles in Kosovo soils collected in 2000 and in Kuwait soils collected in 2002 varied significantly depending on the release scenario and to some extent on weathering conditions. Oxidized U (+6) was determined in large, fragile and bright yellow DU particles released during fire at a DU ammunition storage facility and crystalline phases such as schoepite (UO3·2.25H2O), dehydrated schoepite (UO3·0.75H2O) and metaschoepite (UO3·2.0H2O) were identified. As expected, these DU particles were rapidly dissolved in 0.16 M HCl (84 ± 3% extracted after 2 h) indicating a high degree of potential mobility and bioavailability. In contrast, the 2 h extraction of samples contaminated with DU particles originating either from corrosion of unspent DU penetrators or from impacted DU ammunition appeared to be much slower (2030%) as uranium was less oxidized (+4 to +6). Crystalline phases such as UO2, UC and metallic U or UTi alloy were determined in impacted DU particles from Kosovo and Kuwait, while the UO2,34 phase, only determined in particles from Kosovo, could reflect a more corrosive environment. Although the results are based on a limited number of DU particles, they indicate that the structure and extractability of DU particles released from similar sources (metallic U penetrators) will depend on the release scenarios (fire, impact) and to some extent environmental conditions. However, most of the DU particles (7396%) in all investigated samples were dissolved in 0.16 M HCl after one week indicating that a majority of the DU material is bioaccessible.

Abstract: We studied the coupled impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire (NW), within the effective mass approximation and including the effect of the dielectric mismatch, by using finite element method. Bonding and anti-bonding states are found and their energies converge with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependence of the binding energy on the wire radius R and the distance di between the two impurities is investigated, and we compare it with the result of a freestanding NW that contains a single impurity.

Abstract: Methyl-functionalized Ti-MCM-41 nanoparticles with a size of 80 to 160 nm (Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP) were directly prepared via a dilute solution route by the co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and methylalkoxysilanes in sodium hydroxide medium at room temperature. The characterization results showed the existence of ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure and tetrahedral Ti species in the nanoparticles. In the epoxidation of cyclohexene with tert-butyl hydroperoxide and aqueous H2O2, Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP samples displayed higher turnover frequencies (TOFs) for cyclohexene and initial reaction rates compared to Ti-MCM-41 and methyl-functionalized Ti-MCM-41 with normal particle size and to non-functionalized Ti-MCM-41 nanoparticles. Simultaneously, a higher selectivity for cyclohexene epoxide was observed in the case of aqueous H2O2, suggesting that the hydrolysis of cyclohexene epoxide with water is reduced on Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP samples. The improved catalytic behavior of Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP is discussed both in terms of the nanosize and methylation of the surface of the catalyst particles. The regeneration of Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP with tert-butyl hydroperoxide solution was evaluated via washing and calcination approaches.

Abstract: The limitations of the loading of the porous metalorganic framework [Zn4O(bdc)3] (bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate; MOF-5 or IRMOF-1) with Pd nanoparticles was investigated. First, the volatile organometallic precursor [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] was employed to get the inclusion compound [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)]x@MOF-5 via gas-phase infiltration at 10-3 mbar. A loading of four molecules of [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] per formula unit of MOF-5 (x = 4) can be reached (35 wt.% Pd). Second, the metalorganic precursor [Pd(acac)2] (acac = 2,4-pentanedionate) was used and the inclusion materials [Pd(acac)2]x@MOF-5 of different Pd loadings were obtained by incipient wetness infiltration. However, the maximum loading was lower as compared with the former case with about two precursor molecules per formula unit of MOF-5. Both loading routes are suitable for the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles inside the porous host matrix. Homogeneously distributed nanoparticles with diameter of 2.4(±0.2) nm can be achieved by photolysis of the inclusion compounds [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)]x@MOF-5 (x 4), while the hydrogenolysis of [Pd(acac)2]x@MOF-5 (x 2) leads to a mixture of small particles inside the network (< 3 nm) and large Pd agglomerates (40 nm) on the outer surface of the MOF-5 specimens. The pure Pdx@MOF-5 materials proved to be stable under hydrogen pressure (2 bar) at 150 °C over many hours. Neither hydrogenation of the bdc linkers nor particle growth was observed. The new composite materials were characterized by 1H/13C-MAS-NMR, powder XRD, ICP-AES, FT-IR, N2 sorption measurements and high resolution TEM. Raising the Pd loading of a representative sample Pd4@MOF-5 (35 wt.% Pd) by using [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] as precursor in a second cycle of gas-phase infiltration and photolysis was accompanied by the collapse of the long-range crystalline order of the MOF.
