“Functional respiratory imaging as a tool to assess upper airway patency in children with obstructive sleep apnea”. Van Holsbeke C, Vos W, van Hoorenbeeck K, Boudewyns A, Salgado R, Verdonck PR, Ramet J, de Backer J, De Backer W, Verhulst SL, Sleep Medicine 14, 433 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.sleep.2012.12.005
Abstract: Objective: We aim to investigate if anatomical and functional properties of the upper airway using computerized 3D models derived from computed tomography (CT) scans better predict obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity than standard clinical markers. Methods: Consecutive children with suspected OSA underwent polysomnography, clinical assessment of upper airway patency, and a CT scan while awake. A three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the pharyngeal airway was built from these images, and computational fluid dynamics modeling of low inspiratory flow was performed using open-source software. Results: Thirty-three children were included (23 boys; mean age, was 6.0 +/- 3.2 y). OSA was diagnosed in 23 patients. Children with OSA had a significantly lower volume of the overlap region between tonsils and the adenoids (median volume, 1408 mm compared to 2173 mm; p = 0.04), a lower mean cross-sectional area at this location (median volume, 69.3 mm(2) compared to 114.3 mm(2); p = 0.04), and a lower minimal cross-sectional area (median volume, 17.9 mm(2) compared to 25.9 mm(2); p = 0.05). Various significant correlations were found between several imaging parameters and the severity of OSA, most pronounced for upper airway conductance (r = -0.46) (p < 0.01) for correlation between upper airway conductance and the apnea-hypopnea index. No differences or significant correlations were observed with clinical parameters of upper airway patency. Preliminary data after treatment showed that none of the patients with residual OSA had their smallest cross-sectional area located in segment 3, and this frequency was significantly lower than in their peers whose sleep study normalized (64%; p = 0.05). Conclusion: Functional imaging parameters are highly correlated with OSA severity and are a more powerful correlate than clinical scores of upper airway patency. Preliminary data also showed that we could identify differences in the upper airway of those subjects who did not benefit from a local upper airway treatment. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. “Oxidation and degradation of native wheat starch by acidic bromate in water at room temperature”. Komulainen S, Verlackt C, Pursiainen J, Lajunen M, Carbohydrate Polymers 93, 73 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.carbpol.2012.06.001
Abstract: Native wheat starch was oxidized by benign acidic bromate in water at room temperature. HPLC-ELSD study indicated that starch degraded in the course of oxidation but it still had a polymeric structure characterized by H-1, C-13, HSQC and HMBC NMR measurements. Products were generally water-soluble fragments but the use of a short reaction time and dilute reaction mixture yielded water-insoluble products. Titration of the products showed, that the increase of the starch content and reaction time increased the content of carbonyl and carboxyl groups in the range of 0.5-2.5% and 1.7-17.2%, respectively, in the product fragments. A mechanism for the oxidation reaction was proposed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

“Stabilization of mercury-based superconductors by foreign cations”. Raveau B, Michel C, Hervieu M, Van Tendeloo G, Maignan A, Annales de chimie (1914)
T2 –, 4th North-African Materials Science Symposium (JMSM 94), NOV 23-24, 1994, CASABLANCA, MOROCCO 19, 487 (1994)
Abstract: The recently discovered superconducting mercury-based cuprates HgBa2Can-1CunO2n+2+delta have proved difficult to synthesize as single phases and are sensitive to environment (CO2, moisture). The present paper gives an overview of new series mercury based superconductors, whose stabilisation is based on the fact that a foreign cation with a higher valency than Hg(II) must be introduced in the mercury layers, in order to fill up partially the oxygen vacancies of these layers. By this method, several new series of superconductors involving strontium instead of barium with critical temperatures ranging from 27 K to 95 K have been isolated : Hg0.5Bi0.5Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Hg(0.5)Bi(0.5)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R Y, Nd, Pr), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Pb(0.7)Hg(0.3)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R = Y, Nd) Hg(1-x)Pr(x)Sr(2)A(1-x')Pr(x') Cu2O6+delta (A = Sr, Ca), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2Cu2CO3O7 and Hg1-xCrxSr2CuO4+delta. The behaviour of the praseodymium cuprates that exhibit a rather sharp transition and reach a Tc of 85 K is especially discussed. A method to synthesize new ''Ba-Hg'' superconducting cuprates with the 1212 structure at normal pressure with a Tc up to 110 K is also presented.

“Reduced dimensionality in different forms of carbon”. Van Tendeloo G, Bernaerts D, Amelinckx S, Fullerenes and carbon based materials , 487 (1998)
Abstract: Several TEM techniques are used to characterise the local structure of low dimensional forms of carbon. HREM is particularly useful to describe the defect structure of thin films of diamond or fullerenes and C-60-C-70 nanoclusters. A columnar form of graphite is analysed, mainly by electron diffraction which allowed us to propose a growth mechanism. Diffraction contrast dark field microscopy, in combination with electron diffraction, allows a detailed characterisation of carbon nanotubes; e.g. the chirality distribution of tubes in ropes of single wall tubes is studied by selected area electron diffraction. T2 –, 5th Williamsburg Workshop on 1st-Principles Calculations for, Ferroelectrics, FEB 01-04, 1998, WILLIAMSBURG, VA , 202 (1998)
Abstract: Hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics are modelled by a coupled spin/nonlinear lattice (polarizability) interaction Hamiltonian, where specifically the geometry of the hydrogen bond is included. The model leads to a structural phase transition and describes correctly the isotope effect due to the substitution H/D in hydrogen-bonded systems in terms of bond length changes.

“Determination of the silver sulphide cluster size distribution via computer simulations”. Charlier E, Gijbels R, Van Doorselaer M, De Keyzer R page 85 (2000).
Abstract: Addition of a labile sulphur donor to light sensitive silver halide microcrystals results in the formation of a distribution of silver sulphide clusters on the crystal surface. These silver sulphide clusters enhance the efficiency of image formation during the photographic process. Their activity towards the capturing of light photons, however, is very critical to their size (aggregation number) and concentration. By incorporating gold ions into silver sulphide clusters it was possible to monitor the size distribution by measuring the amount of gold reacted. From these experiments, no evidence was found for aggregation of the reacted sulphur entities on the surface. The uptake of gold ions at different sulphur concentrations could well be fitted with a simulated size distribution when a catalyzed deposition of sulphur was assumed, with a reactivity of the surface equal to 1.0 % for the microcrystals studied. From a simulation of the silver sulphide cluster size distribution a correlation could also be found between increasing aggregation numbers and the absorption at increasing wavelengths in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.
