Abstract: We study the ground and first excited states of the neutral and charged shallow donor system confined in a GaAs quantum well (QW) along one direction and by a parabolic potential in the plane perpendicular to the QW. The influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field and of the position of the donor on the energy of the states is studied. We investigate the dependence of the ground and excited states of the negatively charged donor on the confinement potential and external magnetic field. When the donor is displaced from the center of the QW the presence of the lateral confinement shifts the magnetic field induced angular momentum transitions and shifts the unbinding to higher magnetic field. Abstract: Ballistic spin transport through waveguides, with symmetric or asymmetric double stubs attached to them periodically, is studied systematically in the presence of a weak spin-orbit coupling that makes the electrons precess. By an appropriate choice of the waveguide length and of the stub parameters injected spin-polarized electrons can be blocked completely and the transmission shows a periodic and nearly-square-type behavior, with values 1 and 0, with wide gaps when only one mode is allowed to propagate in the waveguide. A similar behavior is possible for a certain range of the stub parameters even when two modes can propagate in the waveguide and the conductance is doubled. Such a structure is a good candidate for establishing a realistic spin transistor. A further modulation of the spin current can be achieved by inserting defects in a finite-number stub superlattice. Finite-temperature effects on the spin conductance are also considered.

Abstract: Ballistic spin transport is studied through electronic tuners with double stubs attached to them. The spins precess due to the spin-orbit interaction. Injected polarized spins can exit the structure polarized in the opposite direction. A nearly square-wave spin transmission, with values 1 and 0, can be obtained using a periodic system of symmetric stubs and changing their length or width. The gaps in the transmission can be widened using asymmetric stubs. An additional modulation is obtained upon combining stub structures with different values of the spin-orbit strength. Abstract: The ground state of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system with a finite number of charge particles, trapped by two positive impurity charges localized at a distance (z(0)) from the. 2D plane and separated from each other by a distance chi(p) are obtained. The impurities are allowed to carry more than one positive charge. This classical system can form a 2D-like classical molecule that exhibits structural transitions and spontaneous symmetry breaking as function of the separation between the positive charges before it transforms into two 2D-like classical atoms. We also observe structural transitions as a function of the dielectric constant of the substrate which supports the charged particles, in addition to broken symmetry states and unbinding of particles. Abstract: The multiband effective-mass model of cylindrical self-assembled quantum dots in a magnetic field normal to the layer of the quantum dots is presented. The strain distribution is computed by the valence force field method. The strain-dependent multiband Hamiltonian is modified into an axially symmetric form, which commutes with the total angular momentum F-2 = fh. where f denotes the total magnetic quantum number. The heavy hole and the light hole parts in the mixed hole state are resolved. It is found that the heavy hole component dominates in the ground states for both f = 1/2 and 3/2. The electronic structure exhibits numerous anticrossings between the hole levels. The Zeeman splitting between the +\f\ and -\f\ states is also computed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The electron transport properties in delta-doped semiconductor systems-are studied. The subband electronic structure of the delta-doped system is obtained by solving the coupled Schrodinger and Poisson equations. The screening of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas is taken into account for the ionized impurity scattering through the matrix dielectric function within the random-phase approximation. The quantum and transport mobilities are calculated numerically as a function of the total electron density and the width of the doped layer at zero temperature. The intersubband scattering and the effect of empty subbands above the Fermi level on the electron mobilities are investigated. The calculated mobilities are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract: We have developed a microscopic theory which describes the orientational dynamics of C60 molecules in the face-centered-cubic phase of C60 fullerite. The molecular interaction potential and the crystal-field potential are formulated in terms of symmetry-adapted rotator functions. The phase transition to the Pa3BAR structure is driven by an active multipolar mode of T2g symmetry belonging to the l = 10 manifold. The Birman criterion is satisfied. The transition is found to be of first order.

Abstract: Electrical transport properties of the two-dimensional electron gas are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B = Bz and of a weak one-dimensional electric (V0 cos (Kx)) or magnetic (B0 = B0 cos (Kx)z) modulation where B0 << B, K = 2-pi/a, and a is the modulation period. In either case the discrete Landau levels broaden into bands whose width: (1) is proportional to the modulation strength, (2) it oscillates with B, and (3) it gives rise to magnetoresistance oscillations, at low B, that are different in period and temperature dependence from the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) ones, at higher B. For equal energy modulation strengths, V0 = heB0/m*, the magnetic bandwidth at the Fermi energy is about one order of magnitude larger than the electric one. The same holds for the oscillation amplitude of the electrical magnetoresistivity tensor. For two-dimensional modulations the energy spectrum has the same structure but with different scales. For weak magnetic fields and equal modulation strengths the gaps in the spectrum can be much larger in the magnetic case thus making easier the observability of the spectrum's fine structure.

Abstract: The time evolution of a wave packet in strained graphene is studied within the tight-binding model and continuum model. The effect of an external magnetic field, as well as a strain-induced pseudomagnetic field, on the wave-packet trajectories and zitterbewegung are analyzed. Combining the effects of strain with those of an external magnetic field produces an effective magnetic field which is large in one of the Dirac cones, but can be practically zero in the other. We construct an efficient valley filter, where for a propagating incoming wave packet consisting of momenta around the K and K' Dirac points, the outgoing wave packet exhibits momenta in only one of these Dirac points while the components of the packet that belong to the other Dirac point are reflected due to the Lorentz force. We also found that the zitterbewegung is permanent in time in the presence of either external or strain-induced magnetic fields, but when both the external and strain-induced magnetic fields are present, the zitterbewegung is transient in one of the Dirac cones, whereas in the other cone the wave packet exhibits permanent spatial oscillations.

Abstract: The density of states (DOS) and the optical conductivity of graphene is calculated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and where scattering on charged and short-range impurities is included. The standard Kubo formula is employed where the self-energy induced by impurity scattering and the Green's function are calculated self-consistently including inter-Landau level (LL) coupling and screening effects. It is found that the scattering from those two types of impurities results in a symmetric LL broadening and asymmetric inter-LL coupling renormalizes the LL positions to lower energy. The peak position and intensity of the magneto-optical conductivity depends on the filling factor and the broadened DOS. Good agreement is found with recent cyclotron resonance measurements.

Abstract: The electronic structure of the conduction and valence bands of a quantum ring containing a layer inside the ring opening is modeled This structure (nanocup) consists of a GaAs nanodisk (the cup s bottom) and a GaAs nanoring (the cup s rim) which encircles the disk The whole system is embedded in an (Al Ga)As matrix and its shape resembles realistic ring structures grown by the droplet epitaxy technique The conduction-band states in the structure are modeled by the single-band effective-mass theory while the 4-band Luttinger-Kohn model is adopted to compute the valence-band states We analyze how the electronic structure of the nanocup evolves from the one of a quantum ring when the size of either the nanodisk or the nanoring is changed For that purpose (1) the width of the ring (2) the disk radius and (3) the disk height are separately varied For dimensions typical for experimentally realized structures we find that the electron wavefunctions are mainly localized inside the ring even when the thickness of the Inner layer is 90% of the ring thickness These calculations indicate that topological phenomena like the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect are negligibly affected by the presence of the layer inside the ring (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

Abstract: We show that in presence of an applied external field the two-component order parameter superconductor falls in two categories of ground states, namely, in the traditional Abrikosov ground state or in a new ground state fitted to describe a superconducting layer with texture, that is, patched regions separated by a phase difference of pi. The existence of these two kinds of ground states follows from the sole assumption that the total supercurrent is the sum of the two individual supercurrents and is independent of any consideration about the free energy expansion. Uniquely defined relations between the current density and the superfluid density hold for these two ground states, which also determine the magnetization in terms of average values of the order parameters. Because these ground-state conditions are also Bogomolny equations we construct the free energy for the two-component superconductor which admits the Bogomolny solution at a special coupling value. Abstract: We investigate theoretically quantum transport through graphene nanorings in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Our theoretical results demonstrate that the graphene nanorings behave like a resonant tunneling device, contrary to the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations found in conventional semiconductor rings. The resonant tunneling can be tuned by the Fermi energy, the size of the central part of the graphene nanorings and the external magnetic field.

Abstract: Quantization of the transverse electron motion in high-quality superconducting metallic nanowires and nanofilms results in the formation of well-distinguished single-electron subbands. They shift in energy with changing thickness, which is known to cause quantum-size superconducting oscillations. The formation of multiple subbands results in a multigap structure induced by the interplay between quantum confinement and Andreev mechanism. We investigate multisubband superconductivity in a hollow nanocylinder by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. When changing the inner radius and thickness of the hollow nanocylinder, we find a crossover from an irregular pattern of quantum-size superconducting oscillations, typical of nanowires, to an almost regular regime, specific for superconducting nanofilms. At this crossover the multigap structure becomes degenerate. The ratio of the critical temperature to the energy gap increases and approaches its bulk value while being reduced by 20-30% due to Andreev-type states driven by quantum confinement in the irregular regime.

Abstract: We study the effect of electron confinement on the superconducting-to-normal phase transition driven by a magnetic field and/or on the current-carrying state of the superconducting condensate in nanowires. Our investigation is based on a self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We show that in a parallel magnetic field and/or in the presence of supercurrent the transition from superconducting to normal phase occurs as a cascade of discontinuous jumps in the superconducting order parameter for diameters D < 10 divided by 15 nm at T = 0. The critical magnetic field exhibits quantum-size oscillations with pronounced resonant enhancements.

Abstract: The dynamics of strongly confined laser driven semiconductor quantum dots coupled to phonons is studied theoretically by calculating the time evolution of the reduced density matrix using the path integral method. We explore the cases of long pulses, strong dot-phonon and dot-laser coupling and high temperatures, which up to now have been inaccessible. We find that the decay rate of the Rabi oscillations is a non-monotonic function of the laser field leading to the decay and reappearance of the Rabi oscillations in the field dependence of the dot exciton population.

The non-invasive access to properties of such small objects has become possible using submicron Hall probes which detect a local magnetic field and work effectively as micro-fluxmeters similar to, e.g., SQUIDs but with an effective detection loop of only about a square micron. Abstract: We have studied tunnelling through Si donors incorporated in the quantum well of double barrier resonant tunnelling devices. Abstract: In the present paper, the theory of the large bipolaron is reviewed and the possibility of bipolaron formation in the high-T(c) superconductors is indicated. Operator and path-integral formulations of the large bipolaron problem are compared. In the strong-coupling limit, the effect of non-optimal upper-bounds to the single-polaron groundstate energy is emphasized. The fact that the interaction with multiple phonon branches enhances the electron-phonon interaction and might result in a larger stability region for bipolaron formation is indicated. Experimental values for the static and high-frequency dielectric constants are used to discuss the relevance of bipolaron formation as a pair-forming mechanism in the high-T(c) superconductors.

Abstract: The electrical transport properties of a MoGe thin film with a honeycomb array of nanoscale holes are investigated. The critical current of the system shows nonmatching anomalies as a function of applied magnetic field, enabling us to distinguish between multiquanta vortices trapped in the holes and interstitial vortices located between the holes. The number of vortices trapped in each hole is found to be larger than the saturation number predicted for an isolated hole and shows a nonlinear field dependence, leading to the caging effect as predicted from the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Our experimental results are supplemented by numerical simulations based on the GL theory.

Abstract: Based on the Gor'kov formalism for a clean s-wave superconductor, we develop an extended version of the single-band Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory by means of a systematic expansion in the deviation from the critical temperature T(c), i.e., tau = 1 – T/T(c). We calculate different contributions to the order parameter and the magnetic field: the leading contributions (proportional to tau(1/2) in the order parameter and. t in the magnetic field) are controlled by the standard GL theory, while the next-to-leading terms (proportional to tau(3/2) in the gap and proportional to tau(2) in the magnetic field) constitute the extended GL (EGL) approach. We derive the free-energy functional for the extended formalism and the corresponding expression for the current density. To illustrate the usefulness of our formalism, we calculate, in a semianalytical form, the temperature-dependent correction to the GL parameter at which the surface energy becomes zero, and analytically, the temperature dependence of the thermodynamic critical field. We demonstrate that the EGL formalism is not just a mathematical extension to the theory: variations of both the gap and the thermodynamic critical field with temperature calculated within the EGL theory are found in very good agreement with the full BCS results down to low temperatures, which dramatically improves the applicability of the formalism compared to its standard predecessor.

Abstract: Biexcitons in fractional dimensional spaces are studied using variational quantum Monte Carlo. We investigate the biexciton binding energy as a function of the electron-hole mass fraction sigma as well as study the dimensional dependence of biexcitons for sigma = 0 and sigma = 1. As our first application of this model we treat the H(2) molecule in two and three dimensions. Next we investigate biexcitons in carbon nanotubes within the fractional dimensional model. To this end we find a relation between the nanotube radius and the effective dimension. The results of both applications are compared with results obtained using different models and we find a reasonable agreement. Within the fractional dimensional model we find that the biexciton binding energy in carbon nanotubes accurately scales as E(B)(r,epsilon) = 1280 meV angstrom/(r epsilon), as a function of radius r and the dielectric screening epsilon.

“Enhancement of the retrapping current of superconducting microbridges of finite length”. Vodolazov DY, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 85, 024508 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.85.024508
Abstract: We theoretically find that the resistance of a superconducting microbridge or nanowire decreases while the retrapping current I(r) for the transition to the superconducting state increases when one suppresses the magnitude of the order parameter vertical bar Delta vertical bar in the attached superconducting leads. This effect is a consequence of the increased energy interval for diffusion of the “hot” nonequilibrium quasiparticles (induced by the oscillations of vertical bar Delta vertical bar in the center of the microbridge) to the leads. The effect is absent in short microbridges (with length less than the coherence length) and it is relatively weak in long microbridges (with length larger than the inelastic relaxation length of the nonequilibrium distribution function). A nonmonotonous dependence of I(r) on the length of the microbridge is predicted. Our results are important for the explanation of the enhancement of the critical current and the appearance of negative magnetoresistance observed in many recent experiments on superconducting microbridges or nanowires.

“The electric field as a novel switch for uptake/release of hydrogen for storage in nitrogen doped graphene”. Ao ZM, Hernández-Nieves AD, Peeters FM, Li S, Physical chemistry, chemical physics 14, 1463 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1039/c1cp23153g
Abstract: Nitrogen-doped graphene was recently synthesized and was reported to be a catalyst for hydrogen dissociative adsorption under a perpendicular applied electric field (F). In this work, the diffusion of H atoms on N-doped graphene, in the presence and absence of an applied perpendicular electric field, is studied using density functional theory. We demonstrate that the applied field can significantly facilitate the binding of hydrogen molecules on N-doped graphene through dissociative adsorption and diffusion on the surface. By removing the applied field the absorbed H atoms can be released efficiently. Our theoretical calculation indicates that N-doped graphene is a promising hydrogen storage material with reversible hydrogen adsorption/desorption where the applied electric field can act as a switch for the uptake/release processes.

“Flux-quantum-discretized dynamics of magnetic flux entry, exit, and annihilation in current-driven mesoscopic type-I superconductors”. Berdiyorov GR, Hernández-Nieves AD, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, Dominguez D, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 85, 092502 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.85.092502
Abstract: We study nonlinear flux dynamics in a current-carrying type-I superconductor. The stray magnetic field of the current induces the intermediate state, where nucleation of flux domains is discretized to a single fluxoid at a time, while their final shape (tubular or laminar), size, and nucleation rate depend on applied current and edge conditions. The current induces opposite flux domains on opposite sides of the sample, and subsequently drives them to annihilation-which is also discretized, as a sequence of vortex-antivortex pairs. The discretization of both nucleation and annihilation leaves measurable traces in the voltage across the sample and in locally probed magnetization. The reported dynamic phenomena thus provide an unambiguous proof of a flux quantum being the smallest building block of the intermediate state in type-I superconductors.

“Strain-induced band gaps in bilayer graphene”. Verberck B, Partoens B, Peeters FM, Trauzettel B, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 85, 125403 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.85.125403
Abstract: We present a tight-binding investigation of strained bilayer graphene within linear elasticity theory, focusing on the different environments experienced by the A and B carbon atoms of the different sublattices. We find that the inequivalence of the A and B atoms is enhanced by the application of perpendicular strain epsilon(zz), which provides a physical mechanism for opening a band gap, most effectively obtained when pulling the two graphene layers apart. In addition, perpendicular strain introduces electron-hole asymmetry and can result in linear electronic dispersion near the K point. Our findings suggest experimental means for strain-engineered band gaps in bilayer graphene.

“Remote electron plasmon polaron in graphene”. Krstajić, PM, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 85, 085436 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.85.085436
Abstract: The Coulomb interaction and the correlation of a remote electron with a single layer of graphene is investigated in the presence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the graphene layer. The remote electron polarizes the electron gas in the graphene layer, which we describe in terms of excitations of virtual plasmons in graphene. The composite quasiparticle formed by electron plus polarization is called a plasmon polaron. The ground-state energy of this quasiparticle is calculated within perturbation theory for remote electrons in different environments.
