“Transmission and reflection mode macroscopic x-ray powder diffraction imaging for the noninvasive visualization of paint degradation in still life paintings by Jan Davidsz. de Heem”. Vanmeert F, De Keyser N, van Loon A, Klaassen L, Noble P, Janssens K, Analytical chemistry 91, 7153 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACS.ANALCHEM.9B00328
Abstract: The use of noninvasive chemical imaging techniques is becoming more widespread for the study of cultural heritage artifacts. Recently a mobile instrument for macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) scanning was developed, which is capable of visualizing the distribution of crystalline (pigment) phases in quasi-flat-painted artifacts. In this study, MA-XRPD is used in both transmission and reflection mode for the analysis of three 17th century still life paintings, two paintings by Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1684) and one copy painting after De Heem by an unknown artist. MA-XRPD allowed to reveal and map the presence of in situ-formed alteration products. In the works examined, two rare lead arsenate minerals, schultenite (PbHAsO4) and mimetite (Pb-5(AsO4)(3)Cl), were encountered, both at and below the paint surface; they are considered to be degradation products of the pigments realgar (alpha-As4S4) and orpiment (As2S3). In transmission mode, the depletion of lead white, present in the (second) ground layer, could be seen, illustrating the intrusive nature of this degradation process. In reflection mode, several sulfate salts, palmierite (K2Pb(SO4)(2)), syngenite (K2Ca(SO4)(2)center dot H2O), and gypsum (CaSO4 center dot 2H(2)O), could be detected, in particular, at the (top) surface of the copy painting. Estimates for the information depth and sensitivity of both transmission and reflection mode MA-XRPD for various pigments have been made. The possibility of MA-XRPD to allow for noninvasive identification and visualization of alteration products is considered a significant advantage and unique feature of this method. MA-XRPD can thus provide highly relevant information for assessing the conservation state of artworks and could guide possible future restoration treatments.

“Suppressing the formation of NOxand N2O in CO2/N2dielectric barrier discharge plasma by adding CH4: scavenger chemistry at work”. Snoeckx R, Van Wesenbeeck K, Lenaerts S, Cha MS, Bogaerts A, Sustainable Energy &, Fuels 3, 1388 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1039/C8SE00584B
Abstract: The need for carbon negative technologies led to the development of a wide array of novel CO2conversion techniques. Most of them either rely on high temperatures or generate highly reactive O species, which can lead to the undesirable formation of NOxand N2O when the CO2feeds contain N2. Here, we show that, for plasma-based CO2conversion, adding a hydrogen source, as a chemical oxygen scavenger, can suppress their formation,in situ. This allows the use of low-cost N2containing (industrial and direct air capture) feeds, rather than expensive purified CO2. To demonstrate this, we add CH4to a dielectric barrier discharge plasma used for converting impure CO2. We find that when adding a stoichiometric amount of CH4, 82% less NO2and 51% less NO are formed. An even higher reduction (96 and 63%) can be obtained when doubling this amount. However, in that case the excess radicals promote the formation of by-products, such as HCN, NH3and CH3OH. Thus, we believe that by using an appropriate amount of chemical scavengers, we can use impure CO2feeds, which would bring us closer to ‘real world’ conditions and implementation.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for describing growth of Pd and PdO nanoclusters using the ReaxFF force field. The resulting nanocluster structures are successfully compared to those of nanoclusters experimentally grown in a gas aggregation source. The PdO structure is quasi-crystalline as revealed by high resolution transmission microscope analysis for experimental PdO nanoclusters. The role of the nanocluster temperature in the molecular dynamics simulated growth is highlighted.

“In vitro and ex vivo assessment of microporous Faujasite zeolite (NaX-FAU) as a carrier for the oral delivery of danazol”. Kontogiannidou E, Karavasili C, Kouskoura MG, Filippousi M, Van Tendeloo G, Andreadis II, Eleftheriadis GK, Kontopoulou I, Markopoulou CK, Bouropoulos N, Fatouros DG, Journal of drug delivery science and technology 51, 177 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JDDST.2019.02.036
Abstract: Microporous zeolite NaX-FAU has been systemically evaluated for the oral delivery of the poorly water-soluble compound danazol. For this purpose, danazol-loaded zeolitic particles were prepared by the incipient wetness method and were characterized by means of N-2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The zeolitic formulation shows a high drug payload and drug stability over a period of six months under accelerated storage conditions. The dissolution profile of danazol-loaded zeolitic particles was assessed in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) pH 1.2; fasted state simulated intestinal fluids (FaSSIF) and fed state simulated intestinal fluid (FeSSIF) showing a gradual and increasing drug dissolution in the different media. Ex vivo studies using the everted gut sac model show an increased drug transport across rat intestinal epithelium when loaded in the zeolitic particles. Our results suggest that microporous Faujasite zeolite (NaX-FAU) could be used as a drug delivery system to facilitate the oral delivery of poorly water soluble compounds.

“Synthesis and Characterization of Double Solid Solution (Zr,Ti)(2)(Al,Sn)C MAX Phase Ceramics”. Tunca B, Lapauw T, Delville R, Neuville DR, Hennet L, Thiaudiere D, Ouisse T, Hadermann J, Vleugels J, Lambrinou K, Inorganic chemistry 58, 6669 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACS.INORGCHEM.9B00065
Abstract: Quasi phase-pure (>98 wt %) MAX phase solid solution ceramics with the (ZryTi)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C stoichiometry and variable Zr/Ti ratios were synthesized by both reactive hot pressing and pressureless sintering of ZrH2, TiH2, Al, Sn, and C powder mixtures. The influence of the different processing parameters, such as applied pressure and sintering atmosphere, on phase purity and microstructure of the produced ceramics was investigated. The addition of Sn to the (Zr,Ti)(2)AlC system was the key to achieve phase purity. Its effect on the crystal structure of a 211-type MAX phase was assessed by calculating the distortions of the octahedral M6C and trigonal M(6)A prisms due to steric effects. The M(6)A prismatic distortion values were found to be smaller in Sn-containing double solid solutions than in the (Zr,Ti)(2)AlC MAX phases. The coefficients of thermal expansion along the < a > and < c > directions were measured by means of Rietveld refinement of high-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction data of (Zr1-x,Ti-x)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C MAX phase solid solutions with x = 0, 0.3, 0.7, and 1. The thermal expansion coefficient data of the Ti-2(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C solid solution were compared with those of the Ti2AlC and Ti2SnC ternary compounds. The thermal expansion anisotropy increased in the (Zr,Ti)(2)(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C double solid solution MAX phases as compared to the Zr-2(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C and Ti-2(Al-0.5,Sn-0.5)C end-members.

“C3N Monolayer: Exploring the Emerging of Novel Electronic and Magnetic Properties with Adatom Adsorption, Functionalizations, Electric Field, Charging, and Strain”. Bafekry A, Shayesteh SF, Peeters FM, The journal of physical chemistry: C : nanomaterials and interfaces 123, 12485 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACS.JPCC.9B02047
Abstract: Two-dimensional polyaniline with structural unit C3N is an indirect semiconductor with 0.4 eV band gap, which has attracted a lot of interest because of its unusual electronic, optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties useful for various applications. Adsorption of adatoms is an effective method to improve and tune the properties of C3N. Using first-principles calculations, we investigated the adsorption of adatoms, including H, O, S, F, Cl, B, C, Si, N, P, Al, Li, Na, K, Be, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, on C3N. Depending on the adatom size and the number of valence electrons, they may induce metallic, half-metallic, semiconducting, and ferromagnetic-metallic behavior. In addition, we investigate the effects of an electrical field, charging, and strain on C3N and found how the electronic and magnetic properties are modified. Semi- and full hydrogenation are studied. From the mechanical and thermal stability of C3N monolayer, we found it to be a hard material that can withstand large strain. From our calculations, we gained novel insights into the properties of C3N demonstrating its unique electronic and magnetic properties that can be useful for semiconducting, nanosensor, and catalytic applications.

“Raman fingerprint of stacking order in HfS2-Ca(OH)(2) heterobilayer”. Yagmurcukardes M, Ozen S, Iyikanat F, Peeters FM, Sahin H, Physical review B 99, 205405 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.99.205405
Abstract: Using density functional theory-based first-principles calculations, we investigate the stacking order dependence of the electronic and vibrational properties of HfS2-Ca(OH)(2) heterobilayer structures. It is shown that while the different stacking types exhibit similar electronic and optical properties, they are distinguishable from each other in terms of their vibrational properties. Our findings on the vibrational properties are the following: (i) from the interlayer shear (SM) and layer breathing (LBM) modes we are able to deduce the AB' stacking order, (ii) in addition, the AB' stacking type can also be identified via the phonon softening of E-g(I) and A(g)(III) modes which harden in the other two stacking types, and (iii) importantly, the ultrahigh frequency regime possesses distinctive properties from which we can distinguish between all stacking types. Moreover, the differences in optical and vibrational properties of various stacking types are driven by two physical effects, induced biaxial strain on the layers and the layer-layer interaction. Our results reveal that with both the phonon frequencies and corresponding activities, the Raman spectrum possesses distinctive properties for monitoring the stacking type in novel vertical heterostructures constructed by alkaline-earth-metal hydroxides.

“Nanocrystal Core Size and Shape Substitutional Doping and Underlying Crystalline Order in Nanocrystal Superlattices”. Jishkariani D, Elbert KC, Wu Y, Lee JD, Hermes M, Wang D, van Blaaderen A, Murray CB, ACS nano 13, 5712 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACSNANO.9B01107
Abstract: Substitutional doping is a potentially powerful technique to control the properties of nanocrystal (NC) superlattices (SLs). However, not every NC can be substituted into any lattice, as the NCs have to be close in size and shape, limiting the application of substitutional doping. Here we show that this limitation can be overcome by employing ligands of various size. We show that small NCs with long ligands can be substituted into SLs of big NCs with short ligands. Furthermore, we show that shape differences can also be overcome and that cubes can substitute spheres when both are coated with long ligands. Finally, we use the NC effective ligand size, softness, and effective overall size ratio to explain observed doping behaviors.

“Climate variable choice in Ricardian studies of European Agriculture”. Vaitkeviciute J, Chakir R, Van Passel S, Revue économique 70, 375 (2019). http://doi.org/10.3917/RECO.703.0375
Abstract: The Ricardian model has been employed frequently to study the impact of climate change on European agriculture. This paper contributes to this literature by using a panel data of FADN EU regions and the period 2004-2012 and by taking into account both individual heterogeneity as well as spatial autocorrelation among EU regions. We tested three hypotheses related to the degree days model. Our results show that climate outside the defined growing season matters for European agriculture, and excluding it could underestimate climate change impacts. Our results should support public policy decisions about efficient and effective mitigation and adaptation policy measures in EU agriculture.

“Disruption of self-organized striated structure induced by secondary electron emission in capacitive oxygen discharges”. Wang L, Wen D-Q, Zhang Q-Z, Song Y-H, Zhang Y-R, Wang Y-N, Plasma sources science and technology 28, 055007 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6595/AB17AE
Abstract: Self-organized striated structure has been observed experimentally and numerically in CF4 plasmas in radio-frequency capacitively coupled plasmas recently (Liu et al 2016 Phys. Rev. Lett. 116 255002). In this work, the striated structure is investigated in a capacitively coupled oxygen discharge with the introduction of the effect from the secondary electron emission, based on a particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision model. As we know, the transport of positive and negative ions plays a key role in the formation of striations in electronegative gases, for which, the electronegativity needs to be large enough. As the secondary electron emission increases, electrons in the sheaths gradually contribute more ionization to the discharge. Meanwhile, the increase of the electron density, especially in the plasma bulk, leads to an increased electrical conductivity and a reduced bulk electric field, which would shield the ions' mobility. These changes result in enlarged striation gaps. And then, with more emitted electrons, obvious disruption of the striations is observed accompanied with a transition of electron heating mode. Due to the weakened field, the impact ionization in the plasma bulk is attenuated, compared with the enhanced ionization caused by secondary electrons. This would lead to the electron heating mode transition from striated (STR) mode to gamma-mode. Besides, our investigation further reveals that gamma-mode is more likely to dominate the discharge under high gas pressures or driving voltages.

“A Facet-Specific Quantum Dot Passivation Strategy for Colloid Management and Efficient Infrared Photovoltaics”. Abstract: Colloidal nanocrystals combine size- and facet-dependent properties with solution processing. They offer thus a compelling suite of materials for technological applications. Their size- and facet-tunable features are studied in synthesis; however, to exploit their features in optoelectronic devices, it will be essential to translate control over size and facets from the colloid all the way to the film. Larger-diameter colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) offer the attractive possibility of harvesting infrared (IR) solar energy beyond absorption of silicon photovoltaics. These CQDs exhibit facets (nonpolar (100)) undisplayed in small-diameter CQDs; and the materials chemistry of smaller nanocrystals fails consequently to translate to materials for the short-wavelength IR regime. A new colloidal management strategy targeting the passivation of both (100) and (111) facets is demonstrated using distinct choices of cations and anions. The approach leads to narrow-bandgap CQDs with impressive colloidal stability and photoluminescence quantum yield. Photophysical studies confirm a reduction both in Stokes shift (approximate to 47 meV) and Urbach tail (approximate to 29 meV). This approach provides a approximate to 50% increase in the power conversion efficiency of IR photovoltaics compared to controls, and a approximate to 70% external quantum efficiency at their excitonic peak.

“Enhancement of surface discharge in catalyst pores in dielectric barrier discharges”. Gu J-G, Zhang Y, Gao M-X, Wang H-Y, Zhang Q-Z, Yi L, Jiang W, Journal of applied physics 125, 153303 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.5082568
Abstract: The generation of high-density plasmas on the surface of porous catalysts is very important for plasma catalysis, as it determines the active surface of the catalyst that is available for the reaction. In this work, we investigate the mechanism of surface and volume plasma streamer formation and propagation near micro-sized pores in dielectric barrier discharges operating in air at atmospheric pressure. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell/ Monte Carlo collision model is used to model the individual kinetic behavior of plasma species. Our calculations indicate that the surface discharge is enhanced on the surface of the catalyst pores compared with the microdischarge inside the catalyst pores. The reason is that the surface ionization wave induces surface charging along the catalyst pore sidewalls, leading to a strong electric field along the pore sidewalls, which in turn further enhances the surface discharge. Therefore, highly concentrated reactive species occur on the surfaces of the catalyst pores, indicating high-density plasmas on the surface of porous catalysts. Indeed, the maximum electron impact excitation and ionization rates occur on the pore surface, indicating the more pronounced production of excited state and electron-ion pairs on the pore surface than inside the pore, which may profoundly affect the plasma catalytic process. “Insights into the C Distribution in Si:C/Si:C:P and the Annealing Behavior of Si:C Layers”. Dhayalan SK, Nuytten T, Pourtois G, Simoen E, Pezzoli F, Cinquanta E, Bonera E, Loo R, Rosseel E, Hikavyy A, Shimura Y, Vandervorst W, ECS journal of solid state science and technology 8, P209 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1149/2.0181903JSS
Abstract: Si:C and Si:C:P alloys are potential candidates for source-drain stressor applications in n-type Fin Field Effect Transistors (FinFETs). Increasing the C content to achieve high strain results in the arrangement of C atoms as third nearest neighbors (3nn) in the Si: C lattice. During thermal annealing, the presence of C atoms as 3nn may promote clustering at the interstitial sites, causing loss of stress. The concentration of C atoms as 3nn is reduced by the incorporation of a small amount of Ge atoms during the growth, whereas in-situ P doping does not influence this 3nn distribution [J Solid State Sci. Technol vol 6, p 755, 2017]. Small amounts of Ge are provided during low temperature selective epitaxial growth scheme, which are based on cyclic deposition and etching (CDE). In this work, we aim to provide physical insights into the aforementioned phenomena, to understand the behavior of 3nn C atoms and the types of defects that are formed in the annealed Si: C films. Using ab-initio simulations, the Ge-C interaction in the Si matrix is investigated and this insight is used to explain how the Ge incorporation leads to a reduced 3nn distribution of the C atoms. The interaction between C and P in the Si: C: P films is also investigated to explain why the P incorporation has not led to a reduction in the 3nn distribution. We then report on the Raman characterization of Si: C layers subjected to post epi annealing. As the penetration depth of the laser is dependent on the wavelength, Raman measurements at two different wavelengths enable us to probe the depth distribution of 3nn C atoms after applying different annealing conditions. We observed a homogeneous loss in 3nn C throughout the layer. Whereas in the kinematic modeling of high resolution X-ray diffraction spectra, a gradient in the substitutional C loss was observed close to the epitaxial layer/substrate interface. This gradient can be due to the out diffusion of C atoms into the Si substrate or to the formation of interstitial C clusters, which cannot be distinguished in HR-XRD. Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy indicated that the prominent out-diffusing species was interstitial CO complex while the interstitial C defects were also prevalent in the epi layer. “Rembrandt's An Old Man in Military Costume : combining hyperspectral and MA-XRF imaging to understand how two paintings were painted on a single panel”. MacLennan D, Trentelman K, Szafran Y, Woollett AT, Delaney JK, Janssens K, Dik J, Journal of the American Institute for Conservation 58, 54 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1080/01971360.2018.1540245
Abstract: Over the past several decades the painting An Old Man in Military Costume by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (ca. 1630-31; J. Paul Getty Museum, 78.PB.246) has been the subject of a number of investigations carried out in order to better visualize a second painting beneath the surface figure. The underlying image – the head and shoulders of a man wearing a cloak – is oriented 180 degrees from the upper image and appears to be fairly complete. Scanning macro x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy reveals the face is painted with lead white and a mercury-containing pigment (likely vermilion), and the cloak is painted with a copper-containing pigment. Following the revelation and digital color reconstruction of the underlying figure, a number of questions still remained. Here, through the use of infrared reflectance imaging spectroscopy (i.e., hyperspectral imaging) and macro-XRF imaging spectroscopy, together with cross-sections taken from targeted areas, the sequence of painting in both compositions was explored. Of particular interest was the discovery of evidence of multiple attempts to situate the lower figure, and the subsequent application of a blocking-out layer over the lower figure before the artist rotated the panel and executed the upper figure. In addition, examination of the placement of the two images on the panel adds to our understanding of the subtle complexities of Rembrandt's working process. “Disclosing the binding medium effects and the pigment solubility in the (photo)reduction process of chrome yellows (PbCrO4/PbCr1-xSxO4)”. Monico L, Sorace L, Cotte M, de Nolf W, Janssens K, Romani A, Miliani C, ACS Omega 4, 6607 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACSOMEGA.8B03669
Abstract: The darkening due to chemical alteration of chrome yellows (PbCrO4/PbCr1-xSxO4) is a phenomenon threatening a large number of 19th-20th century paintings, including the Amsterdam Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh. Our earlier studies have proven that the alteration is due to a Cr(VI) -> Cr(III) reduction with Cr(V)-species that are formed as long-lived intermediates and that bCr(1-x)S(x)O(4) (0 < x <= 0.8) types undergo reduction more readily than monoclinic, S-free, PbCrO4. In this context, there is still lack of knowledge about the effects of the chemical properties of the binding medium (i.e., chemical composition and drying process) and the solubility of chrome yellows on the overall reduction pathways. Here, we study a series of naturally and photochemically aged mock-up paints prepared by mixing chrome yellow powders (PbCrO4/PbCr0.2S0.8O4) with either linseed oil or a water-based acrylic emulsion as the binding medium. Equivalent paints made up of the highly soluble K2CrO4 were also investigated and used as benchmarks to provide a more in-depth understanding of the influence of the solubility on the chromate reduction pathways in the two different binders. A combination of synchrotron radiation-based Cr K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-Visible spectroscopy measurements shows that: (1) the Cr(VI) reduction results from the interaction between the pigment and the binder; (2) the process is more significant in oil, giving rise to Cr(V)- and Cr(III)-species as well as oxidized organic compounds; (3) the lightfastness of the chrome yellow pigment is enhanced in the acrylic binder; and (4) the tendency toward chromium reduction increases with increasing solubility of the pigment. Based on our findings, we propose a scheme for the mechanism of the (photo)reduction process of chrome yellows in the oil and acrylic binder. Overall, our results provide new insights into the factors driving the degradation of lead chromate-based paints in artworks and contribute to the development of strategies for preserving them over time.

“Disconnecting Symmetry Breaking from Seeded Growth for the Reproducible Synthesis of High Quality Gold Nanorods”. Gonzalez-Rubio G, Kumar V, Llombart P, Diaz-Nunez P, Bladt E, Altantzis T, Bals S, Pena-Rodriguez O, Noya EG, MacDowell LG, Guerrero-Martinez A, Liz-Marzan LM, ACS nano 13, 4424 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACSNANO.8B09658
Abstract: One of the major difficulties hindering the widespread application of colloidal anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles is the limited robustness and reproducibility of multistep synthetic methods. We demonstrate herein that the reproducibility and reliability of colloidal gold nanorod (AuNR) synthesis can be greatly improved by disconnecting the symmetry-breaking event from the seeded growth process. We have used a modified silver-assisted seeded growth method in the presence of the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and n-decanol as a co-surfactant to prepare small AuNRs in high yield, which were then used as seeds for the growth of high quality AuNR colloids. Whereas the use of n-decanol provides a more-rigid micellar system, the growth on anisotropic seeds avoids sources of irreproducibility during the symmetry breaking step, yielding uniform AuNR colloids with narrow plasmon bands, ranging from 600 to 1270 nm, and allowing the fine-tuning of the final dimensions. This method provides a robust route for the preparation of high quality AuNR colloids with tunable morphology, size, and optical response in a reproducible and scalable manner.

“Win-win possibilities through capacity tariffs and battery storage in microgrids”. Milis K, Peremans H, Springael J, Van Passel S, Renewable &, Sustainable Energy Reviews 113, 109238 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.RSER.2019.06.045
Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of capacity tariff design on microgrids. While the possible benefits for utilities of capacity tariffs are well researched, comparatively little work has been done investigating the effects of capacity pricing on prosumers. Through simulating a grid connected microgrid and solving the day-ahead dispatch problem for a calendar year, we show that a well-designed capacity tariff will not only smooth out demand profiles, but could also lead to less erratic charge/discharge cycles in a real-time pricing scenario, lessening battery degradation. These results show that a properly designed capacity tariff has the potential to be beneficial for both the utilities as well as the battery-owning prosumer. Furthermore, we propose a new, heuristic approach to solve the day-ahead economic dispatch problem, which we prove to be effective and efficient. Additionally, we demonstrate that our novel approach does not impose mathematical restrictions such as continuous differentiability of the objective function. We show that the proposed capacity tariff achieves the stated aim of promoting battery storage uptake and that our novel method allows for compression and shorter run times.

“Electron Transfer and Near-Field Mechanisms in Plasmonic Gold-Nanoparticle-Modified TiO2Photocatalytic Systems”. Asapu R, Claes N, Ciocarlan R-G, Minjauw M, Detavernier C, Cool P, Bals S, Verbruggen SW, ACS applied nano materials 2, 4067 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1021/acsanm.9b00485
Abstract: The major mechanism responsible for plasmonic enhancement of titanium dioxide photocatalysis using gold nanoparticles is still under contention. This work introduces an experimental strategy to disentangle the significance of the charge transfer and near-field mechanisms in plasmonic photocatalysis. By controlling the thickness and conductive nature of a nanoparticle shell that acts as a spacer layer separating the plasmonic metal core from the TiO2 surface, field enhancement or charge transfer effects can be selectively repressed or evoked. Layer-by-layer and in situ polymerization methods are used to synthesize gold core–polymer shell nanoparticles with shell thickness control up to the sub-nanometer level. Detailed optical and electrical characterization supported by near-field simulation models corroborate the trends in photocatalytic activity of the different systems. This approach mainly points at an important contribution of the enhanced near field.

“Tomato plants rather than fertilizers drive microbial community structure in horticultural growing media”. Grunert O, Robles-Aguilar AA, Hernandez-Sanabria E, Schrey SD, Reheul D, Van Labeke M-C, Vlaeminck SE, Vanderkerckhove TGL, Mysara M, Monsieurs P, Temperton VM, Boon N, Jablonowski ND, Scientific reports 9, 9561 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1038/S41598-019-45290-0
Abstract: Synthetic fertilizer production is associated with a high environmental footprint, as compounds typically dissolve rapidly leaching emissions to the atmosphere or surface waters. We tested two recovered nutrients with slower release patterns, as promising alternatives for synthetic fertilizers: struvite and a commercially available organic fertilizer. Using these fertilizers as nitrogen source, we conducted a rhizotron experiment to test their effect on plant performance and nutrient recovery in juvenile tomato plants. Plant performance was significantly improved when organic fertilizer was provided, promoting higher shoot biomass. Since the microbial community influences plant nitrogen availability, we characterized the root-associated microbial community structure and functionality. Analyses revealed distinct root microbial community structure when different fertilizers were supplied. However, plant presence significantly increased the similarity of the microbial community over time, regardless of fertilization. Additionally, the presence of the plant significantly reduced the potential ammonia oxidation rates, implying a possible role of the rhizosheath microbiome or nitrification inhibition by the plant. Our results indicate that nitrifying community members are impacted by the type of fertilizer used, while tomato plants influenced the potential ammonia-oxidizing activity of nitrogen-related rhizospheric microbial communities. These novel insights on interactions between recovered fertilizers, plant and associated microbes can contribute to develop sustainable crop production systems.

“Catalyzed growth of encapsulated carbyne”. Khalilov U, Vets C, Neyts EC, Carbon 153, 1 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.carbon.2019.06.110
Abstract: Carbyne is a novel material of current interest in nanotechnology. As is typically the case for nanomaterials, the growth process determines the resulting properties. While endohedral carbyne has been successfully synthesized, its catalyst and feedstock-dependent growth mechanism is still elusive. We here study the nucleation and growth mechanism of different carbon chains in a Ni-containing double walled carbon nanotube using classical molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations. We find that the understanding the competitive role of the metal catalyst and the hydrocarbon is important to control the growth of 1-dimensional carbon chains, including Ni or H-terminated carbyne. Also, we find that the electronic property of the Ni-terminated carbyne can be tuned by steering the H concentration along the chain. These results suggest catalyst-containing carbon nanotubes as a possible synthesis route for carbyne formation.

Abstract: The implementation of plasmonic nanoparticles in vivo remains hindered by important limitations such as biocompatibility, solubility in biological fluids, and physiological stability. A general and versatile protocol is presented, based on seeded emulsion polymerization, for the controlled encapsulation of gold and silver nanoparticles. This procedure enables the encapsulation of single nanoparticles as well as nanoparticle clusters inside a protecting polymer shell. Specifically, the efficient coating of nanoparticles of both metals is demonstrated, with final dimensions ranging between 50 and 200 nm, i.e., sizes of interest for bio-applications. Such hybrid nanocomposites display extraordinary stability in high ionic strength and oxidizing environments, along with high cellular uptake, and low cytotoxicity. Overall, the prepared nanostructures are promising candidates for plasmonic applications under biologically relevant conditions.

“Isolating hydrogen in hexagonal boron nitride bubbles by a plasma treatment”. Abstract: Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is often regarded as an elastic film that is impermeable to gases. The high stabilities in thermal and chemical properties allow h-BN to serve as a gas barrier under extreme conditions. Here, we demonstrate the isolation of hydrogen in bubbles of h-BN via plasma treatment. Detailed characterizations reveal that the substrates do not show chemical change after treatment. The bubbles are found to withstand thermal treatment in air, even at 800°C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy investigation shows that the h-BN multilayer has a unique aligned porous stacking nature, which is essential for the character of being transparent to atomic hydrogen but impermeable to hydrogen molecules. In addition, we successfully demonstrated the extraction of hydrogen gases from gaseous compounds or mixtures containing hydrogen element. The successful production of hydrogen bubbles on h-BN flakes has potential for further application in nano/ micro-electromechanical systems and hydrogen storage.

Muys M (2019) Microbial protein as sustainable feed and food ingredient : production and nutritional quality of phototrophs and aerobic heterotrophs. 262 p

Abstract: High-rate activated sludge (HRAS) systems typically generate diluted sludge which requires further thickening prior to anaerobic digestion (AD), besides the need to add considerable coagulant and flocculant for the solids separation. As an alternative to conventional gravitational settling, a dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit was coupled to a HRAS system or a high-rate contact stabilization (HiCS) system. The HRAS-DAF system allowed up to 78% removal of the influent solids, and the HiCS-DAF 67%. Both were within the range of values typically obtained for HRAS-settler systems, albeit at a lower chemical requirement. The separated sludge had a high concentration of up to 47 g COD L−1, suppressing the need of further thickening before AD. Methanation tests showed a biogas yield of up to 68% on a COD basis. The use of a DAF separation system can thus enable direct organics removal at high sludge concentration and with low chemical needs.

“Removal of alachlor in water by non-thermal plasma: Reactive species and pathways in batch and continuous process”. Abstract: Pesticides are emerging contaminants frequently detected in the aquatic environment. In this work, a novel approach combining activated carbon adsorption, oxygen plasma treatment and ozonation was studied for the removal of the persistent chlorinated pesticide alachlor. A comparison was made between the removal efficiency and energy consumption for two different reactor operation modes: batchrecirculation and single-pass mode. The kinetics study revealed that the insufficient removal of alachlor by adsorption was significantly improved in terms of degradation efficiency and energy consumption when combined with the plasma treatment. The best efficiency (ca. 80% removal with an energy cost of 19.4 kWh mÀ3) was found for the single-pass operational mode of the reactor. In the batch-recirculating process, a complete elimination of alachlor by plasma treatment was observed after 30 min of treatment. Analysis of the reactive species induced by plasma in aqueous solutions showed that the decomposition of alachlor mainly occurred through a radical oxidation mechanism, with a minor contribution of long-living oxidants (O3, H2O2). Investigation of the alachlor oxidation pathways revealed six different oxidation mechanisms, including the loss of aromaticity which was never before reported for plasma-assisted degradation of aromatic pesticides. It was revealed that the removal rate and energy cost could be further improved with more than 50% by additional O3 gas bubbling in the solution reservoir.

“Physical properties of epitaxial SrMnO2.5−δFγoxyfluoride films”. Wang J, Shin Y, Gauquelin N, Yang Y, Lee C, Jannis D, Verbeeck J, Rondinelli JM, May SJ, Journal of physics : condensed matter 31, 365602 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-648X/ab2414
Abstract: Recently, topotactic fluorination has become an alternative way of doping epitaxial perovskite oxides through anion substitution to engineer their electronic properties instead of the more commonly used cation substitution. In this work, epitaxial oxyfluoride SrMnO2.5−δ F γ films were synthesized via topotactic fluorination of SrMnO2.5 films using polytetrafluoroethylene as the fluorine source. Oxidized SrMnO3 films were also prepared for comparison with the fluorinated samples. The F content, probed by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, was systematically controlled by adjusting fluorination conditions. Electronic transport measurements reveal that increased F content (up to γ = 0.14) systematically increases the electrical resistivity, despite the nominal electron-doping induced by F substitution for O in these films. In contrast, oxidized SrMnO3 exhibits a decreased resistivity and conduction activation energy. A blue-shift of optical absorption features occurs with increasing F content. Density functional theory calculations indicate that F acts as a scattering center for electronic transport, controls the observed weak ferromagnetic behavior of the films, and reduces the inter-band optical transitions in the manganite films. These results stand in contrast to bulk electron-doped La1−x Ce x MnO3, illustrating how aliovalent anionic substitutions can yield physical behavior distinct from A-site substituted perovskites with the same nominal B-site oxidation states.
