“Preparation, structural and optical characterization of nanocrystalline ZnO doped with luminescent Ag-nanoclusters”. Kuznetsov AS, Lu Y-G, Turner S, Shestakov MV, Tikhomirov VK, Kirilenko D, Verbeeck J, Baranov AN, Moshchalkov VV, Optical materials express 2, 723 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1364/OME.2.000723
Abstract: Nanocrystalline ZnO doped with Ag-nanoclusters has been synthesized by a salt solid state reaction. Three overlapping broad emission bands due to the Ag nanoclusters have been detected at about 570, 750 and 900 nm. These emission bands are excited by an energy transfer from the exciton state of the ZnO host when pumped in the wavelength range from 250 to 400 nm. The 900 nm emission band shows characteristic orbital splitting into three components pointing out that the anisotropic crystalline wurtzite host of ZnO is responsible for this feature. Heat-treatment and temperature dependence studies confirm the origin of these emission bands. An energy level diagram for the emission process and a model for Ag nanoclusters sites are suggested. The emission of nanocrystalline ZnO doped with Ag nanoclusters may be applied for white light generation, displays driven by UV light, down-convertors for solar cells and luminescent lamps.

“Effect of heat-treatment on luminescence and structure of Ag nanoclusters doped oxyfluoride glasses and implication for fiber drawing”. Kuznetsov AS, Cuong NT, Tikhomirov VK, Jivanescu M, Stesmans A, Chibotaru LF, Velázquez JJ, Rodríguez VD, Kirilenko D, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Optical materials 34, 616 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.optmat.2011.09.007
Abstract: The effect of heat treatment on the structure and luminescence of Ag nanoclusters doped oxyfluoride glasses was studied and the implication for drawing the corresponding fibers doped with luminescent Ag nanoclusters has been proposed. The heat treatment results, first, in condensation of the Ag nanoclusters into larger Ag nanoparticles and loss of Ag luminescence, and further heat treatment results in precipitation of a luminescent-loss nano- and microcrystalline Ag phases onto the surface of the glass. Thus, the oxyfluoride fiber doped with luminescent Ag nanoclusters was pulled from the viscous glass melt and its attenuation loss was 0.19 dB/cm in the red part of the spectrum; i.e. near to the maximum of Ag nanoclusters luminescence band. The nucleation centers for the Ag nanoclusters in oxyfluoride glasses have been suggested to be the fluorine vacancies and their nanoclusters.

“Luminescence of oxyfluoride glasses co-doped with Ag nanoclusters and Yb3+ ions”. Tikhomirov VK, Vosch T, Fron E, Rodríguez VD, Velázquez JJ, Kirilenko D, Van Tendeloo G, Hofkens J, Van der Auweraer M, Moshchalkov VV, RSC advances 2, 1496 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1039/c1ra01026c
Abstract: Bulk oxyfluoride glasses co-doped with Ag nanoclusters and Yb3+ ions have been prepared by a melt quenching technique. When excited in the absorption band of the Ag nanoclusters between 300 to 500 nm, these glasses emit a broad band characteristic of the Ag nanoclusters between 400 to 750 nm as well as an emission band between 900 to 1100 nm, originating from Yb3+ ions. The intensity ratio of the Yb3+/Ag emission bands increases with the Ag doping level at a fixed concentration of Yb3+, indicating the presence of energy transfer mechanism from the Ag nanoclusters to the Yb3+ ions. Comparison of time-resolved decay kinetics of the luminescence in the respectively Ag nanocluster-Yb3+ co-doped and single Ag nanocluster doped glasses, hints towards an energy transfer from the red and infrared emitting Ag nanoclusters to the Yb3+ ions.

“Nonlinear optical properties of Ag nanoclusters and nanoparticles dispersed in a glass host”. Mai HH, Kaydashev VE, Tikhomirov VK, Janssens E, Shestakov MV, Meledina M, Turner S, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Lievens P, The journal of physical chemistry: C : nanomaterials and interfaces 118, 15995 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1021/jp502294u
Abstract: The nonlinear absorption of Ag atomic clusters and nanoparticles dispersed in a transparent oxyfluoride glass host has been studied. The as-prepared glass, containing 0.15 atom % Ag, shows an absorption band in the UV/violet attributed to the presence of amorphous Ag atomic nanoclusters with an average size of 1.2 nm. Upon heat treatment the Ag nanoclusters coalesce into larger nanoparticles that show a surface plasmon absorption band in the visible. Open aperture z-scan experiments using 480 nm nanosecond laser pulses demonstrated nonsaturated and saturated nonlinear absorption with large nonlinear absorption indices for the Ag nanoclusters and nanoparticles, respectively. These properties are promising, e.g., for applications in optical limiting and objects contrast enhancement.

“Optimizing Er/Yb ratio and content in Er-Yb co-doped glass-ceramics for enhancement of the up- and down-conversion luminescence”. Tikhomirov VK, Rodríguez VD, Méndez-Ramos J, del- Castillo J, Kirilenko D, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Solar energy materials and solar cells 100, 209 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.solmat.2012.01.019
Abstract: Er3+Yb3+ co-doped transparent glass-ceramics with varying Er/Yb content and ratio have been prepared. High quantum yields for up- and down-conversion luminescence by energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ and from Er3+ to Yb3+, respectively, have been detected and optimized with respect to the Er/Yb content and ratio, and proposed in particular for up- and down-conversion of solar spectrum for enhancement of the efficiency of solar cells. The rise and decay kinetics for the population of the excited levels of Er3+ and Yb3+ have been studied and fit. Based on these experimental data, the mechanisms for the energy transfers have been suggested with emphasis on the optimized Er/Yb content and ratio for enhancement of the efficiency of the Er3+↔Yb3+ energy transfers.

“Preparation and luminescence of bulk oxyfluoride glasses doped with Ag nanoclusters”. Tikhomirov VK, Rodriguez VD, Kutznetsov D, Kirilenko D, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Optics express 18, 22032 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1364/OE.18.022032
Abstract: Bulk oxyfluoride glasses doped with Ag nanoclusters have been prepared using the melt quenching technique. When pumped in the absorption band of Ag nanoclusters between 300 to 500 nm, these glasses emit a very broad luminescence band covering all the visible range with a weak tail extending into the near infrared. The maximum of the luminescence band and its color shifts to the blue with a shortening of the excitation wavelength and an increasing ratio of oxide to fluoride components, resulting in white color luminescence at a particular ratio of oxide to fluoride; with a quantum yield above 20%.

“Quantum cutting in Li (770 nm) and Yb (1000 nm) co-dopant emission bands by energy transfer from the ZnO nano-crystalline host”. Shestakov MV, Tikhomirov VK, Kirilenko D, Kuznetsov AS, Chibotaru LF, Baranov AN, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Optics express 19, 15955 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1364/OE.19.015955
Abstract: Li-Yb co-doped nano-crystalline ZnO has been synthesized by a method of thermal growth from the salt mixtures. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy and optical spectroscopy confirm the doping and indicate that the dopants may form Li-Li and Yb3+-Li based nanoclusters. When pumped into the conduction and exciton absorption bands of ZnO between 250 to 425 nm, broad emission bands of about 100 nm half-height-width are excited around 770 and 1000 nm, due to Li and Yb dopants, respectively. These emission bands are activated by energy transfer from the ZnO host mostly by quantum cutting processes, which generate pairs of quanta in Li (770 nm) and Yb (1000 nm) emission bands, respectively, out of one quantum absorbed by the ZnO host. These quantum cutting phenomena have great potential for application in the down-conversion layers coupled to the Si solar cells.

“The size and structure of Ag particles responsible for surface plasmon effects and luminescence in Ag homogeneously doped bulk glass”. Shestakov MV, Meledina M, Turner S, Tikhomirov VK, Verellen N, Rodríguez VD, Velázquez JJ, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Journal of applied physics 114, 073102 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.4818830
Abstract: As-prepared and heat-treated oxyfluoride glasses, co-doped with Ag nanoclusters/nanoparticles, are prepared at 0.15 at. % Ag concentration. The as-prepared glass shows an absorption band in the UV/violet attributed to the presence of amorphous Ag nanoclusters with an average size of 1.1 nm. The luminescence spectra of the untreated glass can also be ascribed to these Ag nanoclusters. Upon heat-treatment, the clusters coalesce into Ag nanoparticles with an average size of 2.3 nm, and the glasses show an extra surface plasmon absorption band in the visible. These particles, however, cease to emit due to ascribing plasmonic properties of bulk silver.

“Ultralow blocking temperature and breakdown of the giant spin model in Er3+-doped nanoparticles”. van den Heuvel W, Tikhomirov VK, Kirilenko D, Schildermans N, Chibotaru LF, Vanacken J, Gredin P, Mortier M, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 82, 094421 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.82.094421
Abstract: The magnetization of luminescent Er3+-doped PbF2 nanoparticles (formula Er0.3Pb0.7F2.3) has been studied. Despite the high concentration of the doping Er3+ ions and relatively large size (8 nm) of these nanoparticles we have found no deviation between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled magnetization curves down to T=0.35 K, which points out an ultralow blocking temperature for the reversal of magnetization. We also have found strongly deviating magnetization curves M(H/T) for different temperatures T. These results altogether show that the investigated nanoparticles are not superparamagnetic, but rather each Er3+ ion in these nanoparticles is found in a paramagnetic state down to very low temperatures, which implies the breakdown of the Néel-Brown giant spin model in the case of these nanoparticles. Calculations of magnetization within a paramagnetic model of noninteracting Er3+ ions completely support this conclusion. Due to the ultralow blocking temperature, these nanoparticles have a potential for magnetic field-induced nanoscale refrigeration with an option of their optical localization and temperature control.
