Abstract: The interaction of an injected electron towards a quantum dot (QD) containing a single confined electron is investigated using a flexible time-dependent quantum mechanics formalism, which allows both electrons to move and undergo quantum transitions. Different scenarios combining quantum dot dimensions, dielectric constant, injected wave packet energy, and width were explored, and our main results are: (i) due to the large characteristic transitions times between the confined state in the quantum dot and the delocalized state in the continuum, it is relatively difficult to ionize the occupied QD by Coulomb interaction solely and (ii) the charging state of the quantum dot can be sensed by direct injection of charges. Abstract: For many decades the Boltzmann distribution function has been used to calculate the non-equilibrium properties of mobile particles undergoing the combined action of various scattering mechanisms and externally applied force fields. When the latter give rise to the occurrence of inhomogeneous potential profiles across the region through which the particles are moving, the numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation becomes a highly complicated task. In this work we highlight a particular algorithm that can be used to solve the time dependent Boltzmann equation as well as its quantum mechanical extension, the WignerBoltzmann equation. As an illustration, we show the calculated distribution function describing electrons propagating under the action of both a uniform and a pronouncedly non-uniform electric field.

Abstract: We find localized electron and hole states in a ring-shaped potential kink in biased bilayer graphene. Within the continuum description, we show that for sharp potential steps the Dirac equation describing carrier states close to the K (or K′) point of the first Brillouin zone can be solved analytically for a circular kink/antikink dot. The solutions exhibit interfacial states which exhibit AharonovBohm oscillations as functions of the height of the potential step and/or the radius of the ring.

Abstract: We calculate the spectrum of states that are localized at the interface between two regions of opposite bias in trilayer graphene (TLG). These potential profiles, also known as potential kinks, have been predicted to support two different branches of localized states for the case of bilayer graphene, and show similarities to the surface states of topological insulators. On the other hand, we found that ABC stacked TLG exhibits three different unidimensional branches of states in each valley that are confined to the kink interface. They have the property E(k(y)) = -E(-k(y)) when belonging to the same valley and E-K(k(y)) = -E-K' (-k(y)). A kink-antikink potential profile opens a gap in the spectrum of these one-dimensional states.

Abstract: In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in a rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potential use of the phase print of an antivortex or a multiquantum vortex when realized in unconventional circumstances.

Abstract: We report a totally CMOS-compatible fabrication technique to assemble horizontally suspended single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) resonators. Individual SWCNTs are assembled in parallel at multiple sites by a technique called dielectrophoresis. The mechanical resonance frequencies of the suspended SWCNTs are in the range of 2035 MHz as determined from the piezoresistive response of the resonators during electrostatic actuation. The resistance of the suspended SWCNT either remains unchanged or increases or decreases significantly as a function of the actuation frequency. This can be explained by the effect the nanotube chirality has on the piezoresistive gauge factor.

Abstract: X-ray diffraction studies comparing the transformation of C(60) and C(70) peapods into double walled carbon nanotubes are presented. The structures of the as-formed DWCNTs are strikingly similar, showing that they are not dependent on the nature of the fullerene precursor. High temperature X-ray diffraction measurements of C(70) peapods below the coalescence temperature show that confined C(70) molecules in large tubes undergo an orientational. transition to free rotations. Fast re-orientations of C(70) molecules allow cyclo-addition between adjacent fullerenes to form, in good agreement with the mechanism of coalescence proposed in the literature for C(60) molecules. Abstract: Diffusive properties of a monodisperse system of interacting particles confined to a quasi-one-dimensional channel are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. We calculate numerically the mean-squared displacement (MSD) and investigate the influence of the width of the channel (or the strength of the confinement potential) on diffusion in finite-size channels of different shapes (i.e., straight and circular). The transition from single-file diffusion to the two-dimensional diffusion regime is investigated. This transition [ regarding the calculation of the scaling exponent (alpha) of the MSD <Delta x(2)(t)> proportional to t(alpha)] as a function of the width of the channel is shown to change depending on the channel's confinement profile. In particular, the transition can be either smooth (i.e., for a parabolic confinement potential) or rather sharp (i.e., for a hard-wall potential), as distinct from infinite channels where this transition is abrupt. This result can be explained by qualitatively different distributions of the particle density for the different confinement potentials.

Abstract: Low-temperature magnetoconductance measurements were made in the vicinity of the charge neutrality point (CNP). Two origins for the fluctuations were identified close to the CNP. At very low magnetic fields there exist only mesoscopic magnetoconductance quantum interference features which develop rapidly as a function of density. At slightly higher fields (>0.5 T), close to the CNP, additional fluctuations track the quantum Hall (QH) sequence expected for monolayer graphene. These additional features are attributed to effects of locally charging individual QH localized states. These effects reveal a precursor to the quantum Hall effect since, unlike previous transport observations of QH dot charging effects, they occur in the absence of quantum Hall plateaus or Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. From our transport data we are able to extract parameters that characterize the inhomogeneities in our device.

Abstract: Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Ginzburg-Landau simulations, we explore vortex configurations in magnetically coupled NbSe2/permalloy superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer. The permalloy film with stripe domain structure induces periodic local magnetic induction in the superconductor, creating a series of pinning-antipinning channels for externally added magnetic flux quanta. Such laterally confined Abrikosov vortices form quasi-one-dimensional arrays (chains). The transitions between multichain states occur through propagation of kinks at the intermediate fields. At high fields we show that the system becomes nonlinear due to a change in both the number of vortices and the confining potential. The longitudinal instabilities of the resulting vortex structures lead to vortices levitating in the antipinning channels.

Abstract: The ground-state energy of three-particle systems consisting of electrons and holes as found in semiconducting quantum wells is studied. The degree of confinement is determined by the quantum-well width and we can vary the dimensionality of the system from two to three dimensions. The energy levels of the system can further be altered by the application of an external magnetic field which is directed perpendicular to the well.
