Abstract: We present a generalized Galitskii approach for the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the two-particle vertex function of a Fermi system with the resonant interaction by accounting for the resonant state in the scattering potential and utilizing the universal form of the resonant scattering amplitude. The procedure can be carried out both for the normal as well as for the condensate state. In both cases, the vertex function in the vicinity of the resonance is shown to formally coincide with that obtained for a weakly attractive Fermi gas. Thus we justify the popular calculational framework in which results for the weakly attractive Fermi gas are formally extrapolated into the domain of strong coupling, and further to the repulsive side of the resonance, where molecular states are formed.

Abstract: Recently, core-shell Ag-Co, Ag-Cu, and “onionlike” Cu-Co equilibrium configurations were predicted in the case of isolated face centered cubic (fcc) bimetallic clusters, and three shell onionlike configurations were predicted in the case of ternary metallic clusters with spherical and truncated octahedral morphologies. In the present paper, immiscible binary CuCo and ternary AgCuCo clusters with icosahedral structures are studied as functions of their size and composition. Clusters studied are formed by 13, 55, 147, 309, and 561 atoms corresponding to the five smallest possible closed shell icosahedral structures. An embedded atom model potential is used to describe their cohesion. Equilibrium configurations are investigated by means of Metropolis Monte Carlo free energy minimization in the (NPT) canonical ensemble. Most simulations are achieved at 10 and 300 K. The effect of temperature on segregation ordering is systematically investigated. Selected cases are used to identify the effect of size and composition on melting. In contrast with fcc clusters, homogeneous onionlike configurations of binary clusters are not predicted. When it is allowed by the composition, a complete outer shell is formed by Cu in binary Cu-Co clusters and by Ag in ternary Ag-Cu-Co clusters. Depending on temperature, Co may precipitate into decahedral groups under the Cu vertices of the icosahedra in binary clusters, while the Co-Cu configuration in ternary clusters drastically depends on the Ag coating. Despite the multicomponent character of the clusters and the immiscibility of the species forming them, for most compositions and sizes, equilibrium structures remain close to perfectly icosahedral at 10 K as well as at 300 K.

Abstract: Results are discussed of a transmission electron microscopy study of high-dose oxygen implanted silicon. In addition to the general high temperature (> 1200-degrees-C) annealing treatments also annealings at 'low' temperatures (1000-1100-degrees-C) were performed in order to slow down the precipitate and defect reactions. The observed dissolution of the oxide precipitates during prolonged high temperature annealing is explained by critical radius considerations. Threading dislocations are the remaining lattice defects in the silicon overlayer and cannot be removed by further annealing. Low temperature annealing results in the formation and subsequent unfaulting of extrinsic stacking fault loops below the buried oxide layer.

Abstract: The large-scale production of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is reported. Large quantities of SWNTs can be synthesised by catalytic decomposition of methane over well-dispersed metal particles supported on MgO at 1000 degrees C. The thus produced SWNTs can be separated easily from the support by a simple acidic treatment to obtain a product with high yields (70-80%) of SWNTs. Because the typical synthesis time is 10 min, 1 g of SWNTs can be synthesised per day by this method. The SWNTs are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and by Raman spectroscopy, showing the quality and the quantity of products. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The melting transition of the five different lattices of a bilayer crystal is studied using the Monte-Carlo (MC) technique. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures, which is a consequence of the specific topology of the temperature induced defects. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayers as well as for single layer crystals.

Abstract: We have studied the molecular energy terms of the hole configurations (h(u)(+))(m), m=2,3,4,5 of C-60(m+) cations and the electronic configurations (t(1u))(n) n=2,3,4, as well as (t(1u))(n-1)t(1g) of the C-60(n-) anions. The lowest terms (within an energy span of 0.03 eV) for C-60(2+) are three triplets T-3(1g), (3)G(g), T-3(2g) and for C-60(3+) are three quartets T-4(1u), (4)G(u), T-4(2u), which favor Jahn-Teller distortions. For the ground state of C-60(2-) we find a triplet T-3(1g) in agreement with Hund's rules. Our method takes into account intramolecular direct and exchange multipolar Coulomb interactions.

Abstract: The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behavior is not found for the case of large kappa, i.e., type-II superconductivity,

Abstract: The technique of imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and dual beam depth,profiling has been used to study the composition of the surface of tabular silver halide microcrystals. Analysis of individual microcrystals with a size well below 1 mum from a given emulsion is possible. The method is successfully applied for the characterization of silver halide microcrystals with subpercent global iodide concentrations confined in surface layers with a thickness below 5 nm. The developed TOF-SIMS analytical procedure is explicitly demonstrated for the molecular imaging of adsorbed thiocyanate layers (SCN) at crystal surfaces of individual crystals and for the differentiation of iodide conversion layers synthesized with KI and with AgI micrates (nanocrystals with a size between 10 and 50 nm). It can be concluded that TOF-SIMS as a microanalytical, surface-sensitive technique has some unique properties over other analytical techniques for the study of complex structured surface layers of silver halide microcrystals. This offers valuable information to support the synthesis of future photographic emulsions.

Abstract: We apply the exact diagonalization technique to calculate the ground and excited states of a bipolar artificial molecule composed of two vertically coupled quantum dots containing different types of carriers electrons and holes in equilibrium. In this system, the magnetic field tunes the relative role of intra-dot Coulomb interaction while the inter-dot separation sets the strength of inter-dot correlations. We find an intricate pattern of the switching of the ground-state angular momentum with increasing magnetic field and a rearrangement of approximate single-particle levels as a function of the inter-dot coupling strength.

Abstract: Multiply connected mesoscopic: superconductors are considered within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The two coupled nonlinear equations are solved numerically and we investigated the properties of a superconducting ring, two concentric rings, and an asymmetric ring. We find that (i) for a mesoscopic superconducting ring the flux through the hole is not quantized, (ii) two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings are magnetically coupled and the interaction energy increases with increasing sample thickness, and (iii) in asymmetric rings, a stationary phase slip state is predicted.

Abstract: Infrared absorption spectra of composite precipitates are analysed with a modified Day-Thorpe algorithm, assuming a precipitated phase consisting of a mixture of two components with known optical properties. Additional constraints are introduced when solving the model equations by using a priori knowledge making the algorithm more reliable. It is shown that this novel approach allows determining both morphology and composition of precipitates. The method is applied to characterise oxide precipitates in boron-doped silicon. The results indicate that for the resistivity range above 60 mOmegacm, the precipitated phase is most probably SiO1.17+/-0.14, while for resistivities below 20 mOmega cm, precipitates consist of a SiO2/B2O3 composite with a large volume fraction of B(2)0(3) (up to 40% for 8 mOmegacm material). Abstract: Organic carbocyanine dye coatings have been analyzed by time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-S-SIMS) using three types of primary ions: Ga+ operating at 25 keV, and Xe+ and SF5+ both operating at 9 keV. Secondary ion yields obtained with these three primary ions have been compared for coatings with different layer thickness, varying from (sub)-monolayer to multilayers, on different substrates (Si, Ag and AgBr cubic microcrystals). For (sub)-monolayers deposited on Ag, Xe+ and SF5+ primary ions generate similar precursor ion intensities, but with Ga+ slightly lower precursor ion intensities were obtained. Thick coatings on Ag as well as mono- and multilayers on Si produce the highest precursor and fragment ion intensities with the polyatomic primary ion. The yield difference between SF5+ and Xe+ can reach a factor of 6. In comparison with Ga+, yield enhancements by up to a factor of 180 are observed with SF5+. For the mass spectrometric analysis of dye layers on AgBr microcrystals, SF5+ again proves to be the primary ion of choice. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: The superexchange interactions between the fullerenes arise as a result of the electron transfer from the C-60 molecule to the alkali atom and back. We present a scheme, which is a configuration interaction approach based on the valence bond (Heitler-London) method. The effect of superexchange is described together with chemical bonding by constructing and solving a secular equation, rather than by using a perturbation treatment. We have considered 180degrees and 90degrees superexchange for the C-60 Cs-C-60 pathways. The calculations account for unusual electronic properties of polymer orthorhombic and quenched cubic phases of CsC60: two lines in nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, the development of a spin-singlet ground state and a decrease of magnetic susceptibility as T-->0.

Abstract: High-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are synthesized in gram amount on Fe-Mo/MgO catalysts by catalytic decomposition of CH4 in H-2 or N-2. Raman data reveal that the as-prepared SATNTs have a diameter of about 0.74-1.29 nm. It is found that the diameter of the as-prepared SWNTs can be controlled mainly by adjusting the molar ratio of Fe-Mo versus the MgO support. Several other factors that potentially influence the growth of SWNTs have been studied in detail. The experimental results show that the nature of the catalyst determines the diameter of the as-prepared SWNTs. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
