Abstract: The properties of the shape memory behaviour of Ni-rich binary NiTi are strongly dependant on the thermal history of the material. In this respect the changing of transformation temperatures of the underlying martensitic transformation and the occurrence of multiple step transformations are the most important phenomena. Part of the explanation is found in the presence of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in the B2 matrix after particular heat treatments. The formation of these precipitates changes the Ni concentration of the matrix and induces a strain field, with both of these aspects expected to be of importance. In this work atomic resolution and analytical TEM (transmission electron microscopy) techniques are used to obtain quantitative information concerning these two main features. Furthermore, the known structure of Ni4Ti3 is refined by a least squares optimization of quantitative electron diffraction data. The high-resolution TEM results show that there are strains up to 2% in the matrix surrounding the precipitates and they gradually increase until a maximum is reached when moving away from the interface. Analytical results reveal a global decrease of Ni content in the matrix when sufficient precipitates are present and a gradient in their close vicinity. The refinement of the structure shows atomic displacements, thereby increasing our understanding of the shrinking of the precipitate lattice with respect to the matrix.

Abstract: A quasiclassical theory of few-electron quantum dots in a strong magnetic field is developed. The ground state energy and the corresponding many-electron wave function are obtained and used to derive a universal relation of critical magnetic fields and calculate the currents and the density-current correlation function.

Abstract: We study the confinement of a C-60 molecule encapsulated in a cylindrical nanotube as a function of the tube radius. Drawing the Mercator maps of the potential, we find two distinct molecular orientations; for tubes with small radii, R-T less than or similar to 7 angstrom, a fivefold axis of the molecule coincides with the tube long axis, for larger radii, R-T less than or similar to 8 angstrom, a threefold axis of the molecule coincides with the tube long axis. These different orientations are caused by the relative importance of the repulsive and the attractive parts of the van der Waals potentials of the molecule with the tube wall for small and large tubes respectively. Experimental evidence is provided by the apparent splitting of A(g) modes of the C-60 molecule in resonant Raman scattering.

Abstract: The confinement of a C-60 molecule encapsulated in a cylindrical nanotube depends on the tube radius. In small tubes with radius R-T less than or similar to 7 A, a fivefold axis of the molecule coincides with the tube axis. The interaction between C-60 molecules in the nanotube is then described by a O-2-rotor model on a 1D liquid chain with coupling between orientational and displacive correlations. This coupling leads to chain contraction. The structure factor of the 1D liquid is derived. In tubes with a larger radius the molecular centers of mass are displaced off the tube axis. The distinction of two groups of peapods with on- and off-axis molecules suggests an explanation of the apparent splitting of A(g) modes of C-60 in nanotubes measured by resonant Raman scattering.

Abstract: Certain crystals, consisting of molecules with unusually large spin, exhibit macroscopically observable signatures of quantum tunneling, when a slowly varying external magnetic field is applied parallel to the easy axis of the crystal. Recently it has been observed that jumps in the magnetization are sometimes accompanied by the emission of infrared radiation. We discuss the connection of the tunneling with the electromagnetic transition, and we address the questions: to what extent can the radiation be considered as a collective, superradiant emission, and what is the role played by the cavity in the experiments? Our conclusion is that among the reported experimental coditions the radiation is not superradidance, but rather a maserlike effect.

Abstract: Samples of transparent glass-ceramics in the ternary system Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS), with Er2O3 as a luminescent dopant, are investigated. The initial glass is obtained by the classical melting technique. In order to induce ceramization of the glass, TiO2 and ZrO2 are added in small amount as nucleating agents. The thermal treatments at 730 and 770 degrees C are carried out to promote formation of titanium zirconate solid solution precipitates. The spatial distribution of the precipitates in the material, their morphology, and their composition are investigated with TEM, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, EELS and EFTEM. The results demonstrate that with the glass-melting preparation technique it is possible to achieve small nanoparticles with uniform distribution and higher number density than with the sol-gel glass preparation.

Abstract: We report a microstructural and compositional study of a 90% Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 – 10% PbTiO3 ceramic sample. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed the presence of compositional ordered nano-domains (1 – 4 mn), observable in two specific orientations, [0 (1) over bar 1] and [1 1 (2) over bar]. However, the visibility and the ordering degree of the nano-domains on the HRTEM images are not at all obvious. Fourier filtering of the images clearly revealed the ordered domains. Antiphase boundaries lying in the (111) planes separate them, while (100) and (111) facets separate the ordered domains from the disordered matrix. Their shape is plate-like, not uniformly spread in the disordered matrix. Their average size varies in different regions of the sample, most probably due to a non-uniform distribution of Ti, as observed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Abstract: Sr2FeMoO6/SrTiO3/CoFe2 trilayers grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 (001) are investigated by transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The stack is epitaxial, independent of whether the CoFe2 electrode is grown at 500 or at 50 degrees C. Thus it is possible to obtain epitaxy near room temperature. The SrTiO3/CoFe2 interface is quite sharp, while the Sr2FeMoO6/SrTiO3 interface presents regions of Fe depletion. The chemical composition of the films is close to the nominal stoichiometries. These results could be useful for the growth of heteroepitaxial devices and magnetic tunnel junctions. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: We introduce a differential geometry description of the path lines, stream lines and particles contours in hydrodynamics. We present a generalized form of a Korteweg-de Vries type of equation for the exterior of a circle. Nonlinearities from the boundary conditions, surface tension and the Euler equations are taken into account, but the flow is considered inviscid and irrotational. For the circular case we describe the traveling waves shapes, solitons and the particles trajectories.

Abstract: The thermal behavior under air of LiFePO(4)-based powders was investigated through the combination of several techniques such as temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Mossbauer and NMR spectroscopies. The reactivity with air at moderate temperatures depends on the particle size and leads to progressive displacement of Fe from the core structure yielding nano-size Fe(2)O(3) and highly defective, oxidized Li(x)Fe(y)PO(4) compositions whose unit-cell volume decreases dramatically when the temperature is raised between 400 and 600 K. The novel LiFePO(4)-like compositions display new electrochemical reactivity when used as positive electrodes in Li batteries. Several redox phenomena between 3.4 V and 2.7 V vs. Li were discovered and followed by in-situ X-ray diffraction, which revealed two distinct solid solution domains associated with highly anisotropic variations of the unit-cell constants.

Abstract: The effects produced by swift heavy ions in the martensitic (18R) and austenitic phase (beta) of Cu based shape memory alloys were characterized. Single crystal samples with a surface normal close to [210](18R) and [001](beta) were irradiated with 200 MeV of Kr(15+), 230 MeV of Xe(15+), 350 and 600 MeV of Au(26+) and Au(29+). Changes in the microstructure were studied with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that swift heavy ion irradiation induced nanometer sized defects in the 18R martensitic phase. In contrast, a hexagonal close-packed phase formed on the irradiated surface of beta phase samples. HRTEM images of the nanometer sized defects observed in the 18R martensitic phase were compared with computer simulated images in order to interpret the origin of the observed contrast. The best agreement was obtained when the defects were assumed to consist of local composition modulations.

Abstract: We perform strategic current injection in a small mesoscopic superconductor and control the (non)equilibrium quantum states in an applied homogeneous magnetic field. In doing so, we realize a current-driven splitting of multiquanta vortices, current-induced transitions between states with different angular momenta, and current-controlled switching between otherwise degenerate quantum states. These fundamental phenomena form the basis for the electronic and logic applications discussed, and are confirmed in both theoretical simulations and multiple-small-tunnel-junction transport measurements.

Abstract: X-ray diffraction studies comparing the transformation of C(60) and C(70) peapods into double walled carbon nanotubes are presented. The structures of the as-formed DWCNTs are strikingly similar, showing that they are not dependent on the nature of the fullerene precursor. High temperature X-ray diffraction measurements of C(70) peapods below the coalescence temperature show that confined C(70) molecules in large tubes undergo an orientational. transition to free rotations. Fast re-orientations of C(70) molecules allow cyclo-addition between adjacent fullerenes to form, in good agreement with the mechanism of coalescence proposed in the literature for C(60) molecules. Abstract: We investigate how the interplay of quantum confinement and particle number-parity fluctuations affects superconducting correlations in ultra-small metallic grains. Using the number-parity projected BCS formalism we calculate the critical temperature and the excitation gap as a function of the grain size for grains with even and odd number of confined carriers. We show that the experimentally observed anomalous increase of the coupling ratio ΔE/kBTc with decreasing superconducting grain size can be attributed to an enhancement of the number-parity fluctuations in ultra-small grains.
