Abstract: Oxygen deficient perovskites Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5 and 0.75, were prepared by using the citrate route at 1373-1573 K for 48 h. The cubic Pm-3m perovskite structure for x=0.5 was confirmed by electron diffraction study and refined using neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data. For x=0.75, the superstructure corresponding to a=root 2 x a(per), b=2 x a(per), c=root 2 x a(per) (a(0)b(-)b(-) tilt system, space group Imma) was revealed by electron diffraction. The solid solution Sr0.75-xCaxY0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, 0.1 <= x <= 0.6 and compound Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92 were prepared in air at 1573 K for 48 h. The crystal structure of Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92 was refined using NPD data (S.G. Pnma, a=5.36595(4), b=7.5091(6), c=5.2992(4) angstrom, R-p=0.057, R-wp=0.056, chi(2)=4.26). High-temperature thermal expansion properties of the prepared compounds were studied in air using both dilatometry and high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction data (HTXRPD). They expanding non-linearly at 298-1073 K due to the loss of oxygen at high temperatures. Calculated average thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) for Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5, 0.75 and Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92(1) are 15.5, 15.1, and 13.8 ppm K-1, respectively. Anisotropy of the thermal expansion along different unit cell axes was observed for Sr0.15Ca0.6Y0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, and Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92. Conductivity of Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5 and 0.75 increases with the temperature reaching 110 S/cm for x=0.5 and 44 S/cm for x=0.75 at 1173 K. Samples of Sr0.75-xCaxY0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, 0.1 <= y <= 0.6 were found to be n-type conductors at room temperature with the similar temperature dependence of the conductivity and demonstrated the increase of the sigma value from similar to 1 to similar to 50 S/cm as the temperature increases from 300 to 1173 K. Their conductivity is described in terms of the small polaron charge transport with the activation energy (E-p) increasing from 340 to 430 meV with an increase of the calcium content from x=0 to x=0.6. Abstract: We apply neutron diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, magnetization measurements, electronic structure calculations, and quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to unravel the structure and magnetism of (CuCl)LaTa2O7. Despite the pseudo-tetragonal crystallographic unit cell, this compound features an orthorhombic superstructure, similar to the Nb-containing (CuX)LaNb2O7 with X = Cl and Br. The spin lattice entails dimers formed by the antiferromagnetic fourth-neighbor coupling J(4), as well as a large number of nonequivalent interdimer couplings quantified by an effective exchange parameter J(eff). In (CuCl)LaTa2O7, the interdimer couplings are sufficiently strong to induce the long-range magnetic order with the Neel temperature T-N similar or equal to 7 K and the ordered magnetic moment of 0.53 mu(B), as measured with neutron diffraction. This magnetic behavior can be accounted for by J(eff)/J(4) similar or equal to 1.6 and J(4) similar or equal to 16 K. We further propose a general magnetic phase diagram for the (CuCl)LaNb2O7-type compounds, and explain the transition from the gapped spin-singlet (dimer) ground state in (CuCl)LaNb2O7 to the long-range antiferromagnetic order in (CuCl)LaTa2O7 and (CuBr)LaNb2O7 by an increase in the magnitude of the interdimer couplings J(eff)/J(4), with the (CuCl)LaM2O7 (M = Nb, Ta) compounds lying on different sides of the quantum critical point that separates the singlet and long-range-ordered magnetic ground states.

Abstract: High-quality single crystals of Rb2ZnCl4 and K2ZnCl4, pure or doped with Cu, Mn, Cd, Tl, Sn, Pb and In cations, were grown by Czochralski technique in argon atmosphere, using an experimental setup that allows direct visual access to the whole growth zone. Slowly cooled crystals exhibit excellent cleavage properties. Fastly cooled crystals do cleave poorly. As shown by X-ray diffraction studies, such K2ZnCl4 samples exhibit inclusions of the high-temperature Pmcn phase with lattice parameters a = 7.263(2) Angstrom, b = 12.562(2) Angstrom and c = 8.960(4) Angstrom in the P2(1) cn room temperature stable phase. Abstract: When studying photocatalysis it is important to consider, beside the chemical approach, the engineering part related to process optimisation. To achieve this a fixed bed photocatalytic set-up consisting of different catalyst placings, in order to vary catalyst distribution, is studied. The use of a fixed quantity of catalyst placed packed or randomly distributed in the reactor, results in an almost double degradation for the distributed catalyst. Applying this knowledge leads to an improved performance with limited use of catalyst. A reactor only half filled with catalyst leads to higher degradation performance compared to a completely filled reactor. Taking into account this simple process optimisation by better distributing the catalyst a more sustainable photocatalytic air purification process is achieved. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: A comparative study of NH3-sensing performance of blank and modified nanocrystal line SnO2 was performed. Tin dioxide modified by ruthenium displayed the highest ammonia sensitivity with a maximum signal at 200 degrees C. The modifier was shown by XPS and EPR to occur in a mixed valence state of oxidized ruthenium distributed between the surface and bulk of tin dioxide nanocrystals. RuOx clustering on SnO2 surface was detected by means of electron microscopy assisted EDX-mapping. The effect of RuOx on tin dioxide interaction with ammonia was studied by temperature-programmed NH3 desorption, simultaneous Kelvin probe and DC-resistance measurements, EPR spectroscopy and analyses of the gas-solid interaction products. The modifier was shown to promote the materials reactivity to NH3 due to the catalytic activity of RuOx. The interaction with ammonia resulted in dipoles formation on the oxide surface along with reducing the grains net surface charge, established from the electron affinity increase and resistance decrease during NH3 exposure. The RuOx-catalyzed gas-solid interaction was deduced to proceed deeper than in the case of non-modified SnO2 and to yield nitrogen oxides (e.g. NO2), as was suggested by the oxidative character of gaseous products of NH3 interaction with RuOx-modified tin dioxide at 200 degrees C. Abstract: We report on the crystal structure and magnetism of the iron-based oxyfluoride Bi4Fe5O13F, a material prototype of the Cairo pentagonal spin lattice. The crystal structure of Bi4Fe5O13F is determined by a combination of neutron diffraction, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. It comprises layers of FeO6 octahedra and FeO4 tetrahedra forming deformed pentagonal units. The topology of these layers resembles a pentagonal least-perimeter tiling, which is known as the Cairo lattice. This topology gives rise to frustrated exchange couplings and underlies a sequence of magnetic transitions at T-1 = 62 K, T-2 = 71 K, and T-N = 178 K, as determined by thermodynamic measurements and neutron diffraction. Below T-1, Bi4Fe5O13F forms a fully ordered non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure, whereas the magnetic state between T-1 and T-N may be partially disordered according to the sizable increase in the magnetic entropy at T-1 and T-2. Bi4Fe5O13F reveals unanticipated magnetic transitions on the pentagonal Cairo spin lattice and calls for a further work on finite-temperature properties of this strongly frustrated spin model. Abstract: The crystal structure of SrCo0.7Fe0.2Nb0.1O2.72 was determined using a combination of precession electron diffraction (PED), high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS). The structure has a tetragonal P4/mmm symmetry with cell parameters a = b = a(p), c = 2a(p) (a(p) being the cell parameter of the perovskite parent structure). Octahedral BO2 layers alternate with the anion-deficient BO1.4 layers, the different B cations are randomly distributed over both layers. The specific feature of the SrCo0.7Fe0.2NB0.1O2.72 microstructure is a presence of extensive nanoscale twinning resulting in domains with alignment of the tetragonal c-axis along all three cubic direction of the perovskite subcell.

Abstract: The Li-ion rechargeable battery, due to its high energy density, has driven remarkable advances in portable electronics. Moving toward more sustainable electrodes could make this technology even more attractive to large-volume applications. We present here a new family of 3d-metal hydroxysulfates of general formula LiMSO4OH (M = Fe, Co, and Mn) among which (i) LiFeSO4OH reversibly releases 0.7 Li+ at an average potential of 3.6 V vs Li+/Li-0, slightly higher than the potential of currently lauded LiFePO4 (3.45 V) electrode material, and (ii) LiCoSO4OH shows a redox activity at 4.7 V vs Li+/Li-0. Besides, these compounds can be easily made at temperatures near 200 degrees C via a synthesis process that enlists a new intermediate phase of composition M-3(SO4)(2)(OH)(2) (M = Fe, Co, Mn, and Ni), related to the mineral caminite. Structurally, we found that LiFeSO4OH is a layered phase unlike the previously reported 3.2 V tavorite LiFeSO4OH. This work should provide an impetus to experimentalists for designing better electrolytes to fully tap the capacity of high-voltage Co-based hydroxysulfates, and to theorists for providing a means to predict the electrochemical redox activity of two polymorphs.

Abstract: Single crystal antimony-doped SnO2 whiskers have been synthesized by in situ doping process in horizontal flow reactor. The produced whiskers were modified with 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 or 2 wt.% Pd. The processes of Pd particles growth and aggregation are described on the base of AFM and STEM data. Depending on the content of introduced Pd precursor, the various mechanisms (Volmer-Weber or Stranski-Krastanov) of Pd nanoparticles growth realize. The dependence of sensor signal to CO on Pd concentration has non-monotonous character determined by the size of Pd nanoparticles and their aggregation degree. The best sensor signal toward CO was observed for whiskers decorated with 0.1 wt.% Pd. This concentration corresponds to the presence of individual 3-5 nm Pd nanoparticles on the surface of the whiskers. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16, the complex selenite chloride of cesium and neodymium, was synthesized in the NdOCl-SeO2-CsCl system. The compound has been characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, luminescence spectroscopy, and second-harmonic-generation techniques. Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell with a = 15.911(1) angstrom, b = 15.951(1) angstrom, and c = 25.860(1) angstrom and a noncentrosymmetric space group Pna2(1) (No. 33). The crystal structure of Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 can be represented as a stacking of Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12) lamellas and CsCl-like layers. Because of the layered nature of the Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 structure, it features numerous planar defects originating from occasionally missing the CsCl-like layer and violating the perfect stacking of the Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 lamellas. Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 represents the first example of a noncentrosymmetric structure among alkaline-metal lanthanide selenite halides. Cs7Nd11(SeO3)(12)Cl-16 demonstrates luminescence emission in the near-IR region with reduced efficiency due to a high concentration of Nd3+ ions causing nonradiative cross-relaxation.

Abstract: Korund-artiges ε-Mn2O3 und Perowskit-artiges ζ-Mn2O3, zwei neue Phasen von Mn2O3, wurden unter hohen Drücken bei hohen Temperaturen synthetisiert. Die Manganatome können vollständig die A- und B-Positionen der Perowskitstruktur besetzen. ζ-Mn2O3 (siehe Bild, A-Positionsordnung) enthält Mn in den drei Oxidationsstufen +II, +III und +IV.

Abstract: A first germanium-based cationic clathrate of type-III, Ge129.3P42.7Te21.53, was synthesized and structurally characterized (space group P42/mnm, a = 19.948(3) Å, c = 10.440(2) Å, Z = 1). In its crystal structure, germanium and phosphorus atoms form three types of polyhedral cages centered with Te atoms. The polyhedra share pentagonal and hexagonal faces to form a 3D framework. Despite the complexity of the crystal structure, the Ge129.3P42.7Te21.53 composition corresponds to the Zintl counting scheme with a good accuracy. Ge129.3P42.7Te21.53 demonstrates semiconducting/insulating behavior of electric resistivity, high positive Seebeck coefficient (500 μV K1 at 300 K), and low thermal conductivity (<0.92 W m1 K1) within the measured temperature range.

Abstract: We report the Cr3+ for Mn3+ substitution in the BiMnFe2O6 structure. The BiCrxMn1-xFe2O6 solid solution is obtained by the solution-gel synthesis technique for the x values up to 0.3. The crystal structure investigation using a combination of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the compounds retain the parent BiMnFe2O6 structure (for x = 0.3, a = 5.02010(6)angstrom, b = 7.06594(7)angstrom, c = 12.6174(1)angstrom, S.G. Pbcm, R-1 = 0.036, R-p = 0.011) with only a slight decrease in the cell parameters associated with the Cr3+ for Mn3+ substitution. Magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest strong similarities in the magnetic behavior of BiCrxMn1-xFe2O6 (x = 0.2; 0.3) and parent BiMnFe2O6. Only T-N slightly decreases upon Cr doping that indicates a very subtle influence of Cr3+ cations on the magnetic properties at the available substitution rates. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10, a representative of the rare n = 3 members of the Ruddlesden-Popper manganites A(n+1)Mn(n)O(3n+1), was synthesized in an evacuated sealed silica tube. Its crystal structure was refined from a combination of powder X-ray diffraction (PXD) and precession electron diffraction (PED) data, with the rotations of the MnO6 octahedra described within the symmetry-adapted mode approach (space group Cccm, a = 29.068(1) angstrom, b = 5.5504(5) angstrom, c = 5.5412(5) angstrom; PXD RF = 0.053, RP = 0.026; PED RF = 0.248). The perovskite block in La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10 features an octahedral tilting distortion with out-of-phase rotations of the Mn06 octahedra according to the (Phi,Phi,0)(Phi,Phi,0) mode, observed for the first time in the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper structures. The Mn06 octahedra demonstrate a noticeable deformation with the elongation of two apical Mn-O bonds due to the Jahn-Teller effect in the Mn3+ cations. The relationships between the octahedral tilting distortion, the ionic radii of the cations at the A- and B-positions, and the mismatch between the perovslcite and rock-salt blocks of the Ruddlesden-Popper structure are discussed. At low temperatures, La3.2Ba0.8Mn3O10 reveals a sizable remnant magnetization of about 1.3 mu(B)/Mn at 2K, and shows signatures of spin freezing below 150 K.

Abstract: Single crystals of novel orthorhombic (space group Pnnm) iron tetraboride FeB4 were synthesized at pressures above 8 GPa and high temperatures. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements demonstrate bulk superconductivity below 2.9 K. The putative isotope effect on the superconducting critical temperature and the analysis of specific heat data indicate that the superconductivity in FeB4 is likely phonon mediated, which is rare for Fe-based superconductors. The discovered iron tetraboride is highly incompressible and has the nanoindentation hardness of 62(5) GPa; thus, it opens a new class of highly desirable materials combining advanced mechanical properties and superconductivity.
