Abstract: We investigate the influence of a periodic weak modulation along the x direction on the electrical and thermal properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and leads to one-dimensional magnetic bands whose bandwidth oscillates as a function of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields this gives rise to the Weiss oscillations in the magnetoresistance, discovered recently, which have a very weakly temperature-dependent amplitude and a period proportional to square-root n(e), when n(e) is the electron density. Diffusion-current contributions, proportional to the square of the bandwidth, dominate rho(xx), and collisional contributions, varying approximately as the square of the density of states, dominate rho(yy). The result is that rho(xx) and rho(yy) oscillate out of phase as observed. Asymptotic analytical expressions are presented for the conductivity tensor. Similar oscillations, of much smaller amplitude, occur in the thermodynamic quantities, such as the magnetization, the susceptibility, and the specific heat. We also predict oscillations in the Hall resistance, the cyclotron resonance position, the linewidth, as well as in the thermal conductivity and thermopower. The components of the thermal-resistance tensor have a magnetic-field dependence similar to that of the electrical-resistivity tensor.

Abstract: A far-infrared absorption study of electrons in lightly-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices is presented. Both weakly and strongly coupled superlattices are investigated, and the difference between intersubband transitions and transitions between extended minibands is demonstrated. At low temperatures, the absorption spectra are dominated by donor transitions. The 1s-2p(z) transition, which is intimately related to the intersubband transition, is observed. All experimental data are compared to an envelope function calculation for the miniband structure and a variational calculation for the donor energies. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is achieved.

Abstract: In this study of the changes induced by exposing MWCNTs to a nitrogen plasma, it was found by HRTEM that the atomic nitrogen exposure does not significantly etch the surface of the carbon nanotube (CNT). Nevertheless, the atomic nitrogen generated by a microwave plasma effectively grafts amine, nitrile, amide, and oxime groups onto the CNT surface, as observed by XPS, altering the density of valence electronic states, as seen in UPS. Abstract: Hybrid titania films have been prepared using an adapted sol-gel method for obtaining well-dispersed hydrogen plasma-treated multiwall carbon nanotubes in either pure titania or Nb-doped titania. The drop-coating method has been used to fabricate resistive oxygen sensors based on titania or on titania and carbon nanotube hybrids. Morphology and composition studies have revealed that the dispersion of low amounts of carbon nanotubes within the titania matrix does not significantly alter its crystallization behaviour. The gas sensitivity studies performed on the different samples have shown that the hybrid layers based on titania and carbon nanotubes possess an unprecedented responsiveness towards oxygen (i.e. more than four times higher than that shown by optimized Nb-doped TiO(2) films). Furthermore, hybrid sensors containing carbon nanotubes respond at significantly lower operating temperatures than their non-hybrid counterparts. These new hybrid sensors show a strong potential for monitoring traces of oxygen (i.e. <= 10 ppm) in a flow of CO(2), which is of interest for the beverage industry.

Abstract: Ti-MCM-41 nanoparticles 80-160 nm in diameter (Ti-MCM-41 NP) were successfully prepared by a dilute solution route in sodium hydroxide medium at ambient temperature. Ti-MCM-41 NP were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, SEM, TEM. FT-IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The characterization results showed the existence of highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure and tetrahedral Ti species in Ti-MCM-41 NP. In the epoxidation of cyclohexene with aqueous H2O2, Ti-MCM-41 NP displayed higher conversion and initial reaction rate than a Ti-MCM-41 sample with normal particle size (Ti-MCM-41 LP). Diffusion of the reactants was accelerated and the accessibility to the catalytic Ti species was enhanced in the shorter channels in Ti-MCM-41 NP samples. Ti-MCM-41 NP showed much higher selectivity for cyclohexene oxide compared with Ti-MCM-41 LP, suggesting reduced hydrolysis of cyclohexene oxide with water in the former case. The increased selectivity for cyclohexene oxide can be attributed to the lower concentration of residual surface silanols in Ti-MCM-41 NP and the shorter residence time of epoxide in the shorter mesoporous channels. Ti-MCM-41 NP also appears to be a suitable catalyst in the epoxidation of a bulky substrate, like cholesterol, with tert-butyl hydroperoxide. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A semiconductor quantum dot model accounting for single exciton as well as biexciton states coupled to phonons and laser light is investigated in the limit of strong electronic confinement. For an arbitrary sequence of excitations with ultrafast pulses analytical solutions are obtained for all density-matrix elements. The results are nonperturbative with respect to both the carrier-phonon and the carrier-light coupling. Numerical results for a single pulse excitation are presented illustrating spectral features of our solution as well as pulse area and temperature dependences.

Abstract: The energy barrier which has to be overcome for a single vortex to enter or exit the sample is studied for thin superconducting disks, rings, and squares using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The shape and the height of the nucleation barrier is investigated for different sample radii and thicknesses and for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. It is shown that the London theory considerably overestimates (underestimates) the energy barrier for vortex expulsion (penetration). (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The phase and microstructure relationship of 12 mol% CeO2-stabilized ZrO2 ceramics prepared from coated powder was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersed Xray spectroscopy (EDS). As compared with the sample prepared with co-precipitated method, which exhibited a similar grain size distribution, the EDS analysis revealed that the powder coating induced a wide distribution of CeO2 solubility, which decreases monotonically with the increase of grain size. This variation of stabilizer content from grain to grain rendered many large grains in the monoclinic phase. Stronger cerium segregation to grain boundaries was observed between large grains, which often form thin amorphous films there. The inhomogeneous; CeO2 distribution keeps more tetragonal ZrO2 grains close to the phase boundary to facilitate the transforming toughness. Addition of an Al2O3 precursor in coated powders effectively raises the overall CeO2 stabilizer content in the grains and preserves more transformable tetragonal phase in the microstructure, which further enhanced the fracture toughness. The dependence of CeO2 solubility on grain size may be explained in a simple coating-controlled diffusion and growth process that deserves further investigation.

Abstract: Exciton states in self-assembled InP/In0.49Ga0.51P quantum dots subject to magnetic fields up to 50T are calculated. Strain and band mixing are explicitly taken into account in the single-particle models of the electronic structure, while an exact diagonalization approach is adopted to compute the exciton states. Reasonably good agreement with magneto-photoluminescence measurements on InP self-assembled quantum dots is found. As a result of the polarization and angular momentum sensitive selection rules, the exciton ground state is dark. For in-plane polarized light, the magnetic field barely affects the exciton spatial localization, and consequently the exciton oscillator strength for recombination increases only slightly with increasing field. For z polarized light, a sharp increase of the oscillator strength beyond 30 T is found which is attributed to the enhanced s character of the relevant portion of the exciton wave function. Abstract: Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.

Abstract: Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B, of a weak one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation V(x) = V(0)cos(Kx), and of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength a. For V(x) = 0 the SOI mixes the up and down spin states of neighboring Landau levels into two, unequally spaced energy branches. For V(x) not equal 0 these levels broaden into bands and their bandwidths oscillate with B. The n-th level bandwidth of each series vanishes at different values of B. Relative to the ID-modulated 2DEG without SOI and one flat-band condition, there are two flat-band conditions that depend on a and the transport coefficients can change considerably. For weak a the Weiss oscillations show beating patterns while for strong a the Shubnikov-de Haas ones axe split in two.

Abstract: The influence of the well width fluctuations on the dependence of the binding energy of excitonic complexes in quantum wells is studied by using the path-integral Monte-Carlo technique. The results are compared with available experimental data and a good agreement is found.

Abstract: This Letter presents a generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation for the superconducting order parameter which includes the terms resulting from the confining interaction associated with the specimen boundary.
