Title Highly sensitive and selective voltammetric sensor fullerene modified glassy carbon electrode for determination of cefitizoxime in solubilized system Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Electroanalysis Abbreviated Journal
Volume 22 Issue 21 Pages 2600-2606
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract The usefulness of fullerene modified glassy carbon electrode in mediating the reduction of cefitizoxime in solubilized system has been demonstrated. Due to the unique structure and extraordinary properties, fullerene shows higher catalytic efficiency towards cefitizoxime reduction. The kinetic parameters, electron transfer coefficient (α) and rate constant (K0) across the modified electrode are 0.37 and 0.1081/s respectively. The proposed square-wave voltammetric method is linear over the concentration range 1.210.3 µg/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) is found 0.27 ng/mL. High sensitivity and selectivity together with low detection limit of the electrode response make it suitable for the determination of cefitizoxime.

Title Voltammetric assay of anti-vertigo drug betahistine hydrochloride in sodium lauryl sulphate Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Colloids and surfaces: A: physicochemical and engineering aspects Abbreviated Journal
Volume 366 Issue Pages 63-67
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract Assay and electrochemical behaviour of betahistine hydrochloride in BrittonRobinsons (BR) buffer of pH range 2.512.0 at a glassy carbon electrode have been investigated. Addition of anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulphate) to the betahistine hydrochloride solution containing electrolyte enhanced the reduction current signal while neutral surfactant (Tween-20) and cationic surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) showed an opposite effect. Voltammograms of betahistine hydrochloride exhibited a single wave. Based on reduction behaviour of betahistine hydrochloride, a direct square-wave voltammetric method has been developed for the assay of betahistine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical formulation. The proposed method has been validated as per ICH guideline. System and method precision in terms of RSD were 1.88% and 1.60% respectively, whereas the method accuracy was indicated by the recovery of 97.6101.9%. Reduction peak current was linear over the target concentration with correlation coefficient 0.998. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of betahistine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical formulation. The results were compared with those obtained by the reference high performance liquid chromatographic method. No significant differences were found between results of proposed and reference methods.

Title Stripping voltammetry of tinidazole in solubilized system and biological fluids Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Colloids and surfaces: A: physicochemical and engineering aspects Abbreviated Journal
Volume 378 Issue Pages 27-33
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract The adsorptive voltammetric behaviour of tinidazole onto the HMDE was investigated and validated in solubilized system and biological fluids by CV, SWCAdSV and DPCAdSV. Addition of CTAB to the solution containing drug enhanced the peak current while anionic and non-ionic surfactants showed an opposite effect. The electrode process is irreversible and adsorption controlled. Various chemical and instrumental parameters affecting the monitored electroanalytical response were investigated and optimized for tinidazole determination. Under optimized conditions; the adsorptive stripping peak current is linear over the concentration range 7.0 × 10−9 to 6.2 × 10−7 mol/L with detection limit of 4.5 × 10−10 mol/L. The precision of the proposed method in terms of RSD is 1.2% and mean recovery of 100.01%. The applicability of proposed method is further extended to in vitro determination of the drug in biological fluids.

Title Voltammetric determination of antibacterial drug gemifloxacin in solubilized systems at multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Colloids and surfaces: B : biointerfaces Abbreviated Journal
Volume 83 Issue 2 Pages 340-346
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract A sensitive electroanalytical method for determination of gemifloxacin in pharmaceutical formulation has been investigated on the basis of the enhanced electrochemical response at multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode in the presence of CTAB. Solubilized system of different surfactants including SDS, Tween-20 and CTAB were taken for the study of electrochemical behaviour of gemifloxacin at modified electrode. The reduction peak current increases in the presence of CTAB while other surfactants show opposite effect. The modified electrode exhibits catalytic activity, high sensitivity, stability and is applicable over wide range of concentration for the determination of gemifloxacin. The mechanism of electrochemical reduction of gemifloxacin has been proposed on the basis of CV, SWV, DPV and coulometeric techniques. The proposed squarewave voltammetric method shows linearity over the concentration range 2.4715.5 μg/mL. The achieved limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) are 0.90 ng/mL and 3.0 ng/mL respectively.

Title Voltammetric behaviour of drotaverine hydrochloride in surfactant media and its enhancement determination in Tween-20 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Colloids and surfaces: B : biointerfaces Abbreviated Journal
Volume 82 Issue 2 Pages 333-339
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract Simple, sensitive and rapid adsorptive voltammetric behaviour of drotaverine hydrochloride onto the HMDE has been explored and validated in surfactant media by using cyclic, differential pulse and square-wave voltammetry. Addition of Tween-20 to the drotaverine hydrochloride containing electrolyte enhances the reduction current signal. The voltammograms of the drug with Tween-20 in phosphate buffers of pH 2.511.0 exhibit a single well defined reduction peak which may be due to the reduction of Cdouble bond; length as m-dashC group. The cyclic voltammetric studies indicated the reduction of drotaverine hydrochloride at the electrode surface through two electron irreversible step and diffusion-controlled. The peak current showed a linear dependence with the drug concentration over the range 0.87.2 μg mL−1. The calculated LOD and LOQ are 1.8 and 6.0 ng mL−1 by SWCAdSV and 8.1 and 27.2 ng mL−1 by DPCAdSV, respectively. The procedure was applied to the assay of the drug in tablet form with mean percentage recoveries of 100.2% with SWCAdSV and 99.7% with DPCAdSV. The validity of the proposed methods was further assessed by applying a standard addition technique.

Title Voltammetric behaviour of nitroxazepine in solubilized system and biological fluids Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Materials science and engineering: part C: biomimetic materials Abbreviated Journal
Volume 31 Issue 2 Pages 230-237
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract This study reports the development and validation of sensitive and selective assay method for the determination of the antidepressant drug in solubilized system and biological fluids. Solubilized system of different surfactants including cationic, anionic and non-ionic influences the electrochemical response of drug. Addition of cationic surfactant cetrimide to the solution containing drug enhances the peak current signal while anionic and non-ionic showed an opposite effect. The current signal due to reduction process was function of concentration of nitroxazepine, pH, type of surfactant and preconcentration time at the electrode surface. The reduction process is irreversible and adsorption controlled at HMDE. Various chemical and instrumental parameters affecting the monitored electroanalytical response were investigated and optimized for niroxazepine hydrochloride determination. The proposed SWCAdSV and DPCAdSV methods are linear over the concentration range 2.0 × 10-7 5.0 × 10-9 mol/L and 6.1 × 10-7 1.0 × 10-8 mol/L with detection limit of 1.62 × 10-10 mo/L and 1.4 × 10-9 mo/L respectively. The method shows good sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and precision that makes it very suitable for determination of nitroxazepine in pharmaceutical formulation and biological fluids.

Title Analytical capabilities of laboratory, benchtop and handheld X-ray fluorescence systems for detection of metals in aqueous samples pre-concentrated with solid-phase extraction disks Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Spectrochimica acta: part B : atomic spectroscopy Abbreviated Journal
Volume 67 Issue Pages 17-23
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract We aimed to achieve improved instrumental sensitivity and detection limits for the analysis of several elements (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb and Cd) in aqueous samples with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). The metals were pre-concentrated from aqueous solutions using commercially available organic-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) disks functionalized with iminodiacetate groups. These thin-layer organic materials provide an ideal support for XRF analysis. The elements were collected on the SPE extraction disks using a simple filtration procedure (starting with 1 L of aqueous sample) that allows direct XRF measurements to be performed in the field (in situ). We evaluated the analytical possibilities and drawbacks of using this pre-concentration procedure in combination with the following XRF configurations: a handheld unit, a benchtop EDXRF system and a high-energy polarized-beam EDXRF instrument (HE-P-EDXRF). Using the HE-P-EDXRF system, the detection limits for all metals were more than one order of magnitude lower than those attained using handheld and benchtop EDXRF instrumentation. For the detection of metal concentrations higher than similar to 20 mu g/L, however, handheld or benchtop systems remain a very good option due to their extreme simplicity of operation and low-cost, compact design. We demonstrate the application of these methodologies, using the three equipment systems, to the analysis of trace concentrations of metals in different types of aqueous samples, including tap water and waste water. Title Electric field gradient calculations in ZnO samples implanted with 111In(111Cd) Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Solid state communications Abbreviated Journal
Volume 152 Issue 5 Pages 399-402
Keywords A1 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract A first-principles study of the electric field gradient (EFG) calculated for ideal and In-111(Cd-111) implanted ZnO samples is reported in the present work. The study was made for ZnO ideal hexagonal structures and supercells were introduced in order to consider the possible implantation environments. The calculation was done using the “WIEN2k” code within the density functional theory, the exchange and correlation effects were determined by the GGA approximation. Three possible In-111(Cd-111) implantation configurations were studied, one substitutional incorporation at cation site and two interstitials. The obtained EFG values for the ideal structure and the substitutional site are in good agreement with the experimental reports measured by perturbed angular correlation (PAC) and high precision nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Thus, the ascription of substitutional incorporation of In-111(Cd-111) probe atom at the ZnO cation site after annealing was confirmed. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Title Study of dpa distributions in electron irradiated YBCO slabs through MCCM algorithm Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Nuclear instruments and methods in physics research: B: beam interactions with materials and atoms Abbreviated Journal
Volume 274 Issue Pages 191-194
Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract The Monte Carlo assisted Classical Method (MCCM) consists on a calculation procedure for determining the displacements per atom (dpa) distribution in solid materials. This algorithm allows studying the gamma and electron irradiation damage in different materials. It is based on the electrons elastic scattering classic theories and the use of Monte Carlo simulation for the physical processes involved. The present study deals with the Monte Carlo simulation of electron irradiation effects on YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) slabs using the MCNPX code system. Displacements per atom distributions are obtained through the MCCM for electron irradiation up to 10 MeV. In-depth dpa profiles for electrons and positrons are obtained and analysed. Also, dpa contributions from each atomic specie in the material are calculated. It was found that the dpa distribution is more homogeneous in the material volume when increasing energy of incident electrons. Also, the dpa produced by positrons has no relevance when irradiating with electrons, in contrast with previous similar gamma irradiation studies. All the results are presented and discussed in this contribution. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract In the past years, and also within the framework of this CRP, we have used a combination of several nuclear and non-nuclear techniques in fundamental research and especially in various applications. Most work has been done with energy-dispersive X ray fluorescence in combination with electron probe X ray microanalysis, but several other more common analysis techniques have been used as well. The applications have included mostly preventive conservation (e.g. characterisation of damaging atmospheric particles in many museums) and environmental monitoring (e.g. for atmospheric particles in relation to their health effects in outdoor and especially indoor environments). Fundamental aspects have been in the optimising of interfaced electron microprobe and Raman microprobe analysis and the evaluation of the potential of such an instrument for atmospheric aerosols; quite a few unexpected and unpredicted problems have appeared in the latter study.

Title Elemental composition of bottom-sediments from Pangani river basin, Tanzania : lithogenic and anthropogenic sources Type A1 Journal article

Abstract River-bed sediments from the Pangani basin, Tanzania, were characterized for elemental compositions, following contamination risks from rapid expansions of human activities in the area. Samples were collected during two individual seasons and analyzed by high-polarizing beam energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) for eight major and 14 trace elements. Evaluation of enrichment factors (EFs) was used to investigate the elemental flux and assess the contributions of natural and anthropogenic influences. The abundances of the major elements followed the order Si > Al > Fe > Ca > K > Ti > Mn > P, similar to that of the upper earth's crust, and were generally from the weathering of the bed-rock. The high concentrations of typical anthropogenic trace-elements (Cr < 160 mg kg−1, V < 85 mg kg−1, Ni < 60 mg kg−1, Cu < 87 mg kg−1, La < 90 mg kg−1) coupled with high EFs (>2) in some locations indicated contamination associated with agricultural and industrial activities. Factor analysis extracted five principal components that contributed to 96.0% of the total observed variance. The results indicated that river-bed sediments of the Pangani basin were influenced to a larger extent by lithogenic sources than anthropogenic impacts.
