Abstract: Platinum metal was dispersed on microporous, mesoporous, and nonporous support materials including the zeolites Na-Y, Ba-Y, Ferrierite, ZSM-22, ETS-10, and AlPO-11, alumina, and titania. The oxidation of carbon black loosely mixed with catalyst powder was monitored gravimetrically in a gas stream containing nitric oxide, oxygen, and water. The carbon oxidation activity of the catalysts was found to be uniquely related to the Pt dispersion and little influenced by support type. The optimum dispersion is around 3-4% corresponding to relatively large Pt particle sizes of 2040 nm. The carbon oxidation activity reflects the NO oxidation activity of the platinum catalyst, which reaches an optimum in the 20-40 nm Pt particle size range. The lowest carbon oxidation temperatures were achieved with platinum loaded ZSM-22 and AlPO-11 zeolite crystallites bearing platinum of optimum dispersion on their external surfaces.

Abstract: High-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are synthesized in gram amount on Fe-Mo/MgO catalysts by catalytic decomposition of CH4 in H-2 or N-2. Raman data reveal that the as-prepared SATNTs have a diameter of about 0.74-1.29 nm. It is found that the diameter of the as-prepared SWNTs can be controlled mainly by adjusting the molar ratio of Fe-Mo versus the MgO support. Several other factors that potentially influence the growth of SWNTs have been studied in detail. Abstract: Infrared absorption spectra of oxygen precipitates in boron-doped silicon with a boron concentration between 10(17) and 10(19) cm(-3) are analyzed, applying the spectral function representation of composite materials. The aspect ratio of the platelet precipitates is determined by transmission electron microscopy measurements. The analysis shows that in samples with moderate doping levels (<10(18) B cm(-3)) SiOγ precipitates are formed with the same composition as in the lightly doped case. In the heavily boron-doped (>10(18) cm(-3)) samples, however, the measured spectra of the precipitates are consistent with a mixture of SiO2 and B2O3, with a volume fraction of B2O3 as high as 0.41 in the most heavily doped case. Abstract: The dissociation of 60degrees and screw dislocations in diamond is modeled in an approach combining isotropic elasticity theory with ab initio-based tight-binding total-energy calculations. Both dislocations are found to dissociate with a substantial lowering of their line energies. For the 60degrees dislocation, however, an energy barrier to dissociation is found. We investigate the core structure of a screw dislocation distinguishing “shuffle,” “mixed,” and “glide” cores. The latter is found to be the most stable undissociated screw dislocation. Further, the glide motion of 90degrees and 30degrees partials is discussed in terms of a process involving the thermal formation and subsequent migration of kinks along the dislocation line. The calculated activation barriers to dislocation motion show that the 30degrees partial is less mobile than the 90degrees partial. Finally, high-resolution electron microscopy is performed on high-temperature, high-pressure annealed natural brown diamond, allowing the core regions of 60degrees dislocations to be imaged. The majority of dislocations are found to be dissociated. However, in some cases, undissociated 60degrees dislocations were also observed.

Abstract: The magnetic proper-ties and their correlation with the microstructure and electrical transport are investigated in La0.88Sr0.1MnO3 films grown on (100)SrTiO3 Single crystal substrates with thickness ranging from 100 to 2500 Angstrom. The ultrathin film (t = 100 Angstrom) has a single ferromagnetic transition (FMT) at T-c of 250 K, whereas the thicker films exhibit two FMTs, with the main one at a lowered T-c of 200 K while the minor one around 300 K. Furthermore, a thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy has been found, strongly indicating the existence of strain effect, which is also revealed by the transmission electron microscopy study. The suppressed Jahn-Teller distortion (JTD) by the epitaxial strain, and the recovered JTD due to the strain relexation are suggested to explain the metallic behavior in thin films and the insulating behavior in the thick film (t = 2500 Angstrom), repectively.

Abstract: Multi-wall carbon nanotubes have been produced by the catalytic decomposition of acetylene. Go-Mo, Co-V and Co-Fe mixtures supported either on zeolite or corundum alumina were used as catalysts. When Fe or V is added to Co, the carbon deposit increases. The nanotubes were characterized by both low and high resolution TEM. From histograms representing the outer diameter distributions, it is clear that the outer diameter of the nanotubes can be controlled by choosing the appropriate catalyst. Abstract: Two CoSi2/Si1-xGex/Si(100) heterostructures, with different Ge content, made by molecular beam epitaxy are characterized by high resolution electron microscopy. In general, the interface between the CoSi2 thin film and the Si1-xGex layer is of a high structural quality and the strained Si1-xGex layer exhibits few defects. For both samples, different interface structures are present, although the dominant interfacial configuration is similar to the unreconstructed interface present at the CoSi2/Si(100) interface. Only occasionally (2x1) reconstructed interface regions are found which are just a few nanometers in length. Phenomena such as Ge segregation and the introduction of defects are also observed in the Si1-xGex layer. We attribute the minimal presence of the reconstructed interface to both the (2x8):Si1-xGex(100) surface reconstruction and the Ge segregation that takes place. Abstract: Results are discussed of a transmission electron microscopy study of high-dose oxygen implanted silicon. In addition to the general high temperature (> 1200-degrees-C) annealing treatments also annealings at 'low' temperatures (1000-1100-degrees-C) were performed in order to slow down the precipitate and defect reactions. The observed dissolution of the oxide precipitates during prolonged high temperature annealing is explained by critical radius considerations. Threading dislocations are the remaining lattice defects in the silicon overlayer and cannot be removed by further annealing. Low temperature annealing results in the formation and subsequent unfaulting of extrinsic stacking fault loops below the buried oxide layer.

Abstract: We present energy filtered holography experiments on a thin foil of Al. By propagating the reduced density matrix of the probe electron through the microscope, we quantitatively predict the fringe contrast as a function of energy loss. Fringe contrast simulations include the effect of Fresnel fringes created at the edges of the defocused biprism, the effect of partial coherence in combination with inelastic scattering, and the effect of a finite energy distribution of the incoming beam. Abstract: A hot dip aluminizing process to simulate the continuous galvanizing line (CGL) was carried out in three successive steps by a hot dip simulator: the pre-treatment for removing scales on the 200 x 250 mm(2) and 1mm in thickness cold rolled steel sheet, the dipping in 660 degrees C Al-Si melt for 3s and the cooling. In a pre-treatment, the steel specimen was partly coated by Au to confirm the mechanism of intermetallic compound (IMC) formation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses were followed to observe the cross-section and the distribution of the elements. The specimen was analyzed in the boundary of the dipped-undipped part to see the formation mechanism of the aluminized steel. An intermetallic compound (IMC) is rapidly developed and grown in the steel-liquid interface. It has been usually reported that the IMC was formed by the dissolution of iron in the steel substrate toward the melt and the diffusion of aluminum in an opposite direction. The specimen is covered with aluminum-10 wt.% silicon, forms the IMC in the part that was not Au coated. However, IMC is not formed in the Au-coated part. The interface of the dipped-undipped is also analyzed by EDX. At the interface of the steel-IMC, it is clearly shown that the IMC is only formed in the dipped part and exists in the steel substrate as well, and contributes by iron, aluminum and silicon. The result clearly shows that only aluminum diffuses into the steel substrate without the dissolution of iron and forms the IMC between the steel substrate and the melt. Au coating and the short dipping time prevent the iron from dissolving into the aluminum melt. By TEM combined with focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation, the IMC is confirmed as Fe2SiAl8, a hexagonal structure with space group P6(3)/mmc.

Abstract: For many years magnesium oxide (MgO) has been a topic of research as buffer layer for high-temperature superconducting copper oxides and as protective layer in plasma display panels. Since epitaxial growth of MgO is expensive, time consuming and size restricted, other techniques have been developed to grow highly oriented MgO layers for industrial processes. MgO thin films were deposited on a tilted polycrystalline substrate by reactive sputtering using an unbalanced magnetron. By varying different deposition parameters, it is possible to grow biaxially aligned MgO layers, i.e. layers with both out-of-plane and in-plane alignment. XRD measurements were performed to examine the crystallographic structure of the thin film. The preferential out-of-plane orientation is analysed by angular scans using the peak intensity of different reflections while the in-plane orientation is determined by (002) pole figures. Fully [111] out-of-plane oriented layers were grown with a strong in-plane alignment. SEM and TEM measurements were performed to reveal the topographical and cross-sectional microstructure and to investigate the texture evolution of the MgO layers. Evolutionary columnar growth and a roof-tile surface have been observed.

Abstract: The atomic structure of single-wall carbon nanotube bundles produced by three different techniques has been characterized by electron diffraction and microscopy. Small bundles produced by Catalytical Chemical Vapor Deposition (CCVD) exhibit only one or two tube chiralities within a single bundle while bundles produced by arc-discharge or laser-ablation exhibit more chiralities. A detailed analysis of the central line of diffraction is also presented. The CCVD nanotubes present more intense spots around 1.7 Angstrom(-1) < k < 2Angstrom(-1) (k is the momentum transfer) compared to what is observed for nanotubes produced by other methods. Amongst the possible explanation for such an anomaly, we put forward that in this range of momentum transfer, the relative tube orientations and translations are important for what concerns the interpretation of the diffraction peaks intensities.

Abstract: Au particles were prepared by evaporation in ultra high vacuum at high temperature, on the surfaces of TiO2 micro-spheres with the anatase structure. The morphology and the structural deformation in Au deposits were studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and image simulations by the multislice technique. The particles were polyhedral, limited by (100) and (111) faces. Patches with a hexagonal lattice were found around the particles, which was interpreted as thin Au islands on the surface. Abstract: The reaction of a Ti (8 nm) capped Co film (15 nm) with a Si3N4 layer (150 nm) is studied after rapid thermal annealing at 660 degreesC for 120 s in a N-2 ambient. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy are used to study the reaction products. Combining the results of the different analyses yields a layer stack consisting of: TiO2/TiO/unreacted Co/(Ti,Co)(2)N/Co2Si, followed by amorphous Si3N4. The reaction mechanisms are discussed. Abstract: The relationships between incommensurability, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites have been studied by electron diffraction and lattice imaging versus temperature with 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.07. All compositions show an incommensurate superstructure over the whole temperature domain, despite the fact that they are ferromagnetic and conductive below 140 K, The q-vector (1/2 – delta)a* decreases with increasing temperature for all compositions x. For a given temperature q also decreases with x. Lattice images obtained at low temperature give a clear view of the characteristics of the incommensurate structure. They also provide a better understanding of the charge ordering process. The low-temperature form of the Cr-doped manganites is not a perfectly doubled cell [[2a(p)root 2 x 2a(p) x a(p)root 2]], but defects inducing a tripled cell occur pseudo-periodically.
