Title Adsorption and absorption of boron, nitrogen, aluminum, and phosphorus on silicene : stability and electronic and phonon properties Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 87 Issue 8 Pages 085444-85448
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of siliconsilicenewith B, N, Al, or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic, and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill sites for B, N, Al, and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behavior with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from silicene to the B, N, and P adatom/substituent. The Al atoms exhibit opposite charge transfer, with n-type doping of silicene and weaker bonding. The adatoms/substituents induce characteristic branches in the phonon spectrum of silicene, which can be probed by Raman measurements. Using molecular dynamics, we found that the systems under study are stable up to at least T=500 K. Our results demonstrate that silicene has a very reactive and functionalizable surface.

Title Giant magnetic anisotropy in doped single layer molybdenum disulfide and fluorographene Type A1 Journal article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of physics : condensed matter Abbreviated Journal J Phys-Condens Mat
Volume 28 Issue 28 Pages 195301
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Stable monolayer materials based on existing, well known and stable two-dimensional crystal fluorographene and molybdenum disulfide are predicted to exhibit a huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy when functionalized with adsorbed transition metal atoms at vacant sides. Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism were performed to investigate the adsorption of the transitional metals in a single S (or F) vacancy of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (or fluorographene). We found strong bonding of the transitional metal atoms to the vacant sites with binding energies ranging from 2.5 to 5.2 eV. Our calculations revealed that these systems with adsorbed metal atoms exhibit a magnetic anisotropy, specifically the structures including Os and Ir show a giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of 31-101 meV. Our results demonstrate the possibility of obtaining stable monolayer materials with huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy based on preexisting, well known and stable two-dimensional crystals: fluorographene and molybdenum disulfide. We believe that the results obtained here are useful not only for deeper understanding of the origin of magnetocrystalline anisotropy but also for the design of monolayer optoelectronic devices with novel functionalities.

Abstract The effect of a metallic gate on the bound states of a shallow donor located near the gate is studied. We calculate the energy spectrum as a function of the distance between the metallic gate and the donor and find an anti-crossing behavior in the energy levels for certain distances. We show how a transverse electric field can tune the average position of the electron with respect to the metallic gate and the impurity.

Title Strong gate-tunability of flat bands in bilayer graphene due to moiré encapsulation between hBN monolayers Type A1 Journal article

Abstract When using hexagonal boron-nitride (hBN) as a substrate for graphene, the resulting moire pattern creates secondary Dirac points. By encapsulating a multilayer graphene within aligned hBN sheets the controlled moire stacking may offer even richer benefits. Using advanced tight-binding simulations on atomistically-relaxed heterostructures, here we show that the gap at the secondary Dirac point can be opened in selected moire-stacking configurations, and is independent of any additional vertical gating of the heterostructure. On the other hand, gating can broadly tune the gap at the principal Dirac point, and may thereby strongly compress the first moire mini-band in width against the moire-induced gap at the secondary Dirac point. We reveal that in hBN-encapsulated bilayer graphene this novel mechanism can lead to isolated bands flatter than 10 meV under moderate gating, hence presenting a convenient pathway towards electronically-controlled strongly-correlated states on demand.

Abstract The nonlinear Schrodinger equation is solved on an infinitesimal thin ring or circle. We obtained the exact real wave functions with their corresponding energies for the ground state and the excited states. Critical values of the circle perimeter are found at which the ground state changes its structure and additional higher excited states appear. Also, the complex wave functions that correspond to energy levels with finite angular momentum are studied.

Abstract Janus particles present an important class of building blocks for directional assembly. These are compartmentalized colloids with two different hemispheres. Here, we consider a two-dimensional model of Janus disks consisting of a hydrophobic semicircle and an electro-negatively charged one. Placed in a solution, the hydrophobic sides will attract each other while the charged sides will give rise to a repulsive force. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the morphology of these particles when confined in a channel-like environment using a one dimensional harmonic confinement potential. The interest to this system is first of all due to the fact that it could serve as a simple model for membrane formation. Indeed, the recently synthesized new class of artificial amphiphiles, known as Janus dendrimers, were shown to self-assemble in bilayer structures mimicking biological membranes. In turn, Janus particles that combine the amphiphilicity and colloidal rigidity serve as a good model for Janus dendrimers. A variety of ordered membrane-like morphologies are found consisting of single and multiple chain configurations with different orientations of the particles with respect to each other that we summarize in a phase diagram.

Abstract Janus particles present an important class of building blocks for directional assembly. These are compartmentalized colloids with two different hemispheres. In this work we consider a three-dimensional model of Janus spheres that contain one hydrophobic and one charged hemisphere. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the morphology of these particles when confined in a channel-like environment. The interplay between the attractive and repulsive forces on each particle gives rise to a rich phase space where the relative orientation of each particle plays a dominant role in the formation of large-scale clusters. The interest in this system is primarily due to the fact that it could give a better understanding of the mechanisms of the formation of polar membranes. A variety of ordered membranelike morphologies is found consisting of single and multiple connected chain configurations. The helicity of these chains can be chosen by simply changing the salt concentration of the solution. Special attention is given to the formation of Bernal spirals. These helices are composed of regular tetrahedra and are known to exhibit nontrivial translational and rotational symmetry.

Title AA-stacked bilayer square ice between graphene layers Type A1 Journal article
Year 2015 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 92 Issue 92 Pages 245428
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Water confined between two graphene layers with a separation of a few A forms a layered two-dimensional ice structure. Using large scale molecular dynamics simulations with the adoptable ReaxFF interatomic potential we found that flat monolayer ice with a rhombic-square structure nucleates between the graphene layers which is nonpolar and nonferroelectric. We provide different energetic considerations and H-bonding results that explain the interlayer and intralayer properties of two-dimensional ice. The controversial AA stacking found experimentally [Algara-Siller et al., Nature (London) 519, 443 (2015)] is consistent with our minimum-energy crystal structure of bilayer ice. Furthermore, we predict that an odd number of layers of ice has the same lattice structure as monolayer ice, while an even number of ice layers exhibits the square ice AA stacking of bilayer ice.

Abstract Motivated by the potential of atomically thin magnets towards achieving tunable high-frequency magnonics, we detail the spin-wave dispersion of bilayer CrI3. We demonstrate that the magnonic behavior of the bilayer strongly depends on its stacking configuration and the interlayer magnetic ordering, where a topological band gap opens in the dispersion caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions, classifying bilayer CrI3 as a topological magnon insulator. We further reveal that both the size and the topology of the band gap in a CrI3 bilayer with an antiferromagnetic interlayer ordering are tunable by an external magnetic field.

Title Tunable magnon topology in monolayer CrI₃ under external stimuli Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb ferromagnets, such as monolayer chromium trihalides, are predicted to behave as topological magnon insulators, characterized by an insulating bulk and topologically protected edge states, giving rise to a thermal magnon Hall effect. Here we report the behavior of the topological magnons in monolayer CrI3 under external stimuli, including biaxial and uniaxial strain, electric gating, as well as in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field, revealing that one can thereby tailor the magnetic states as well as the size and the topology of the magnonic bandgap. These findings broaden the perspective of using 2D magnetic materials to design topological magnonic devices.

Abstract We study the electronic structure of diluted F atoms chemisorbed on graphene using density functional theory calculations. We show that the nature of the chemical bonding of a F atom adsorbed on top of a C atom in graphene strongly depends on carrier doping. In neutral samples the F impurities induce a sp(3)-like bonding of the C atom below, generating a local distortion of the hexagonal lattice. As the graphene is electron-doped, the C atom retracts back to the graphene plane and for high doping (10(14) cm(-2)) its electronic structure corresponds to a nearly pure sp(2) configuration. We interpret this sp(3)-sp(2) doping-induced crossover in terms of a simple tight-binding model and discuss the physical consequences of this change.

Title Quantized conductance without reservoirs : method of the nonequilibrium statistical operator Type A1 Journal article
Year 2007 Publication Journal of computational electronics Abbreviated Journal J Comput Electron
Volume 6 Issue 1/3 Pages 255-258
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We introduce a generalized non-equilibrium statistical operator (NSO) to study a current-carrying system. The NSO is used to derive a set of quantum kinetic equations based on quantum mechanical balance equations. The quantum kinetic equations are solved self-consistently together with Poissons equation to solve a general transport problem. We show that these kinetic equations can be used to rederive the Landauer formula for the conductance of a quantum point contact, without any reference to reservoirs at different chemical potentials. Instead, energy dissipation is taken into account explicitly through the electron-phonon interaction. We find that both elastic and inelastic scattering are necessary to obtain the Landauer conductance.

Abstract We derive an analytical model for the electrostatics and the drive current in a silicon nanowire operating in JFET mode. We show that there exists a range of nanowire radii and doping densities for which the nanowire JFET satisfies reasonable device characteristics. For thin nanowires we have developed a self-consistent quantum mechanical model to obtain the electronic structure.

Title Novel device concepts for nanotechnology : the nanowire pinch-off FET and graphene tunnelFET Type A2 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication ECS transactions Abbreviated Journal

Abstract We explain the basic operation of a nanowire pinch-off FET and graphene nanoribbon tunnelFET. For the nanowire pinch-off FET we construct an analytical model to obtain the threshold voltage as a function of radius and doping density. We use the gradual channel approximation to calculate the current-voltage characteristics of this device and we show that the nanowire pinch-off FET has a subthreshold slope of 60 mV/dec and good ION and ION/IOFF ratios. For the graphene nanoribbon tunnelFET we show that an improved analytical model yields more realistic results for the transmission probability and hence the tunneling current. The first simulation results for the graphene nanoribbon tunnelFET show promising subthreshold slopes.
