“A new Bi4Mn1/3W2/3O8Cl Sillén-Aurivillius intergrowth: synthesis and structural characterisation by quantitative transmission electron microscopy”. Avila-Brande D, Otero-Díaz LC, Landa-Cánovas AR, Bals S, Van Tendeloo G, European journal of inorganic chemistry , 1853 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1002/ejic.200501021
Abstract: The synthesis and structural characterisation of a new phase with nominal composition Bi4Mn1/3W2/3O8Cl is presented. Conventional and analytical transmission electron microscopy are used to determine the composition, unit-cell symmetry and space group of the compound, whereas a structural model is deducted by exit-wave reconstruction in the transmission electron microscope. This technique allows the microscope information limit of 1.1 angstrom to be reached and the (light) oxygen atoms in the presence of heavier atoms (Bi, W, Mn) to be imaged. The average structure is refined from Xray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld method yielding an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a 5.467(4) angstrom, b = 5.466(7) angstrom and c = 14.159(3) angstrom and space group Cm2m, which could be described as a Sillen-Aurivillius intergrowth. “EELS investigations of different niobium oxide phases”. Bach D, Störmer H, Schneider R, Gerthsen D, Verbeeck J, Microscopy and microanalysis 12, 416 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1017/S1431927606060521
Abstract: Electron energy loss spectra in conjunction with near-edge fine structures of purely stoichiometric niobium monoxide (NbO) and niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) reference materials were recorded. The structures of the niobium oxide reference materials were checked by selected area electron diffraction to ensure a proper assignment of the fine structures. NbO and Nb2O5 show clearly different energy loss near-edge fine structures of the Nb-M-4,M-5 and -M-2,M-3 edges and of the O-K edge, reflecting the specific local environments of the ionized atoms. To distinguish the two oxides in a quantitative manner, the intensities under the Nb-M-4,M-5 as well as Nb-M-2,M-3 edges and the O-K edge were measured and their ratios calculated. k-factors were also derived from these measurements.

“Influence of surface defects on the vortex transitions in mesoscopic superconductors”. Baelus BJ, Kadowaki K, Peeters FM, AIP conference proceedings 850, 745 (2006)
Abstract: Solving the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations self-consistently, we investigate the influence of a triangular surface defect (i.e. pacman shaped sample) on the vortex transitions in mesoscopic superconducting disks. Depending on the size of the defect, vortices may enter/leave one by one or in pairs.

Abstract: Within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory, we calculated the full phase diagram for a superconducting disk with radius R = 4 (T = 0) and we studied the behavior of the penetration and expulsion fields as a function of temperature for multivortex and giant vortex states.

Abstract: Experimentally, multivortex states and giant vortex states in mesoscopic superconductors can be distinguished directly by using the multiple-small-tunnel-junctions, and indirectly by studying the temperature dependence of the expulsion fields. These experimental results are compared with the theoretical prediction from the nonlinear Ginzburg- Landau theory.

Abstract: The local structure of Bi4W2/3Mn1/3O8Cl is determined using quantitative transmission electron microscopy. The electron exit wave, which is closely related to the projected crystal potential, is reconstructed and used as a starting point for statistical parameter estimation. This method allows us to refine all atomic positions on a local scale, including those of the light atoms, with a precision in the picometer range. Using this method one is no longer restricted to the information limit of the electron microscope. Our results are in good agreement with x-ray powder diffraction data demonstrating the reliability of the method. Moreover, it will be shown that local effects can be interpreted using this approach.

Abstract: Annular dark-field transmission electron microscopy uses an annular objective aperture that blocks the central beam and all electrons scattered up to a certain serniangle. A contrast suitable for electron tomography is generated and 3D reconstructions of CdTe tetrapods and C nanotubes (see figure) are successfully obtained. With short exposure times and high contrast, the technique could be useful not only for materials science, but also for biological applications.

Abstract: Certain crystals, consisting of molecules with unusually large spin, exhibit macroscopically observable signatures of quantum tunneling, when a slowly varying external magnetic field is applied parallel to the easy axis of the crystal. Recently it has been observed that jumps in the magnetization are sometimes accompanied by the emission of infrared radiation. We discuss the connection of the tunneling with the electromagnetic transition, and we address the questions: to what extent can the radiation be considered as a collective, superradiant emission, and what is the role played by the cavity in the experiments? Our conclusion is that among the reported experimental coditions the radiation is not superradidance, but rather a maserlike effect.
