“Andreev-type states induced by quantum confinement”. Shanenko AA, Croitoru MD, Mints RG, Peeters FM, Journal of Surface Investigation. X-ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques 2, 611 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1134/S1027451008040216
Abstract: The properties of a clean superconductor with nanoscale dimensions are governed by quantum confinement of the electrons. This results in a spatially inhomogeneous superconducting condensate and in the formation of new Andreev-type quasiparticle states. These states are mainly located beyond regions where the superconducting condensate is enhanced. A numerical self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a cylindrical metallic nanowire shows that these new Andreev-type states decrease the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature.

“Angular confinement and direction-dependent transmission in graphene nanostructures with magnetic barriers”. Masir MR, Vasilopoulos P, Matulis A, Peeters FM, AIP conference proceedings 1199, 363 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.3295453
Abstract: We evaluate the transmission through magnetic barriers in graphene-based nanostructures. Several particular cases are considered: a magnetic step, single and double barriers, delta -function barriers as well as barrier structures with inhomogeneous magnetic field profiles but with average magnetic field equal to zero. The transmission exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the incident wave vector. In general the resonant structure of the transmission is significantly more pronounced for (Dirac) electrons with linear spectrum compared to that for electrons with a parabolic one.

“Aqueous CSD approach for the growth of novel, lattice-tuned LaxCe1-xO\delta epitaxial layers”. Abstract: Lanthanumcerium oxide (LCO) films were deposited on Ni-5%W substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD) from water-based precursors. LCO films containing different ratios of lanthanum and cerium ions (from CeO2 to La2Ce2O7) were prepared. The composition of the layers was optimized towards the formation of LCO buffer layers, lattice-matched with the superconducting YBa2Cu3Oy layer, useful for the development of coated conductors. Single, crack-free LCO layers with a thickness of up to 140 nm could be obtained in a single deposition step. The crystallinity and microstructure of these lattice-matched LCO layers were studied by X-ray diffraction techniques, RHEED and SEM. We find that only layers with thickness below 100 nm show a crystalline top surface although both thick and thin layers show good biaxial texture in XRD. On the most promising layers, AFM and (S)TEM were performed to further evaluate their morphology. The overall surface roughness varies between 3.9 and 7.5 nm, while the layers appear much more dense than the frequently used La2Zr2O7 (LZO) systems, showing much smaller nanovoids (12 nm) than the latter system. Their effective buffer layer action was studied using XPS. The thin LCO layers supported the growth of superconducting YBCO deposited using PLD methods.

Abstract: The energy spectrum and density of states of graphene bilayer superlattices (SLs) are evaluated. We take into account doping and/or gating of the layers as well as tunnel coupling between them. In addition, we evaluate the transmission through such SLs and through single or double barriers. The transmission exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the incident wave vector.

“Biaxially aligned yttria stabilized zirconia and titanium nitride layers deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering”. Mahieu S, Ghekiere P, de Winter G, de Gryse R, Depla D, Lebedev OI, Diffusion and defect data : solid state data : part B : solid state phenomena
T2 –, 2nd International Conference on Texture and Anisotropy of Polycrystals, JUL 07-09, 2004, Metz, FRANCE 105, 447 (2005)
Abstract: Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.

“Branch current behavior at two level anti-crossings in vertical quantum dot single-particle spectra”. Payette C, Austing DG, Yu G, Gupta JA, Nair SV, Partoens B, Amaha S, Tarucha S, AIP conference proceedings 1199, 271 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.3295404
Abstract: We study single-electron-elastic-resonant-tunneling through two weakly coupled vertical quantum dots and investigate the branch current behavior at anti-crossings between two single-particle energy levels in the constituent dot spectra that are induced to approach each other by application of an out-of-dot-plane magnetic field. We observe both the familiar case of monotonic transfer of the resonant current strengths between the two branches as well as the less familiar case of concurrent enhancement and suppression (ideally complete cancellation) of the resonant current in the two branches. These two situations can be explained in terms of a simple coherent tunneling model. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

“Characterisation of the local stress induced by shallow trench isolation and CoSi2 silicidation”. Stuer C, Steegen A, van Landuyt J, Bender H, Maex K, Institute of physics conference series , 481 (2001)
Abstract: With further down-scaling below 0.25mum technologies, CoSi2 is replacing TiSi2 because of its superior formation chemistry on narrow lines and favourable stress behaviour. Shallow trench isolation (STI) is used as the isolation technique in these technologies. In this study, convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) measurements and finite element modelling (FEM) are performed to evaluate the local stress components in the silicon substrate, induced in STI structures with a 45 nm or a 85 nm CoSi2 silicidation. High compressive stresses in the active area and tensile stress around the trench corners are observed.

Abstract: In situ HREM irradiation of (110) FZ-Si crystals covered with thin Si3N4 films was carried out in a JEOL-4000EX microscope, operated at 400 keV at room temperature. It is found that clustering of vacancies on (113) planes is realised in a Si layer close to the Si-Si3N4 interface at the initial stage of irradiation. Further aggregation of self-interstitials inside vacancy clusters is considered as an alternative way of point defect recombination in extended shape, to be accomplished with the formation of the extended defects of interstitial type upon interstitial supersaturation.

T2 –, Symposium on GaN and Related Alloys Held at the MRS Fall Meeting, NOV 29-DEC 03, 1999, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 5, art. no.-W11.38 (2000)
Abstract: Rutherford backscattering and channeling spectrometry (RBS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to investigate macroscopic and microscopic segregation in MOCVD grown InGaN layers. The PL peak energy and In content (measured by RES) were mapped at a large number of distinct points on the samples. An indium concentration of 40%, the highest measured in this work, corresponds to a PL peak of 710 nn strongly suggesting that the light-emitting regions of the sample me very indium-rich compared to the average measured by RES. Cross-sectional TEM observations show distinctive layering of the InGaN films. The TEM study further reveals that these layers consist of amorphous pyramidal contrast features with sizes of order 10 nm The composition of these specific contrast features is shown to be In-rich compared to the nitride matrix.

Abstract: Metamorphic buffers (M-buffers) consisting of graded InAlAs or bulk InP were employed for the production of InP-based epiwafers on GaAs substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The graded InAlAs is the standard for production metamorphic high electron mobility transistors (M-HEMTs), while the bulk InP offers superior thermal properties for higher current density circuits. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the two M-buffers showed different relaxation mechanisms. The graded InAlAs gave a cross-hatched pattern with nearly full relaxation and very effective dislocation filtering, while the bulk InP had a uniform isotropic surface with dislocations propagating further up towards the active layers. Both types of M-buffers had atomic force microscopy root-mean-square roughness values around 2030 Å. The Hall transport properties of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer, and a baseline HEMT grown lattice matched on InP, both had room-temperature mobilities >10 000 cm2/V s, while the M-HEMT on the InP M-buffer showed a decrease to 9000 cm2/V s. Similarly, the dc parameters of a double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer were much closer to the baseline heterojunction bipolar transistor than a DHBT grown on the InP M-buffer. A high breakdown voltage of 11.3 V was achieved on an M-DHBT with the InAlAs M-buffer. We speculate that the degradation in device characteristics on the InP M-buffer was related to the incomplete dislocation filtering.

“Effect of annealing on the transformation behavior and mechanical properties of two nanostructured Ti-50.8at.%Ni thin wires produced by different methods”. Abstract: A Ti-50.8at.%Ni wire produced using a co-drawing method and a commercial Ti-50.8at.%Ni wire were annealed at different temperatures between 450°C and 700°C. Grains with diameter less than 100nm were revealed by transmission electron microscopy for both wires before annealing treatment. However, the microstructural heterogeneity of the co-drawn wire is more obvious than that of the commercial wire. Multi-stage martensitic transformation was observed in the co-drawn wire, compared with the one-stage A↔M transformation in the commercial wire after annealing at 600°C for 30min. The differences of total elongation, plateau strain and pseudoelastic recoverable strain between the commercial wire and the co-drawn wire were also observed. The differences of the transformation behavior and mechanical properties between the commercial wire and the co-drawn wire are attributed to the microstructural difference between these two wires.

Abstract: The thermal behavior under air of LiFePO(4)-based powders was investigated through the combination of several techniques such as temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Mossbauer and NMR spectroscopies. The reactivity with air at moderate temperatures depends on the particle size and leads to progressive displacement of Fe from the core structure yielding nano-size Fe(2)O(3) and highly defective, oxidized Li(x)Fe(y)PO(4) compositions whose unit-cell volume decreases dramatically when the temperature is raised between 400 and 600 K. The novel LiFePO(4)-like compositions display new electrochemical reactivity when used as positive electrodes in Li batteries. Several redox phenomena between 3.4 V and 2.7 V vs. Li were discovered and followed by in-situ X-ray diffraction, which revealed two distinct solid solution domains associated with highly anisotropic variations of the unit-cell constants.

Abstract: Materials with low dielectric constant ("low-k'') in combination with Cu metallization are replacing the oxide based dielectrics with Al metallization in future generations of micro-electronic devices. In this work, a carbon doped oxide low-k dielectric material is studied after different kinds of etch/strip steps in single damascene Cu. filled line structures. Interline capacitance measurements indicate a dependence of the dielectric constant on the strip conditions. EFTEM is used to study the composition of the dielectric material and the modification of the low-k material at the sidewall of the etched structures for the various treatment conditions.

Abstract: The distribution of the electric charge density in mesoscopic superconducting disks and cylinders is studied within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach. We found that, even in the Meissner state the mesoscopic sample exhibits a non-uniform charge distribution such that a region near the sample edge becomes negatively charged. When vortices are inside the sample there is a superposition of the negative charge located at the vortex core and this Meissner charge, and, as a result, the charge at the sample edge changes sign as a function of the applied magnetic field.
