Title Molecular structure and orientational ordering in solid C60 Type A1 Journal article
Year 1992 Publication The journal of chemical physics Abbreviated Journal J Chem Phys
Volume 97 Issue 7 Pages 5155-5162
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract A microscopic theory, which describes the orientational dynamics of C60 molecules in the face-centered cubic phase of C60-fullerite, is formulated or the case of a complex molecular structure. Interaction centers which comprise atoms, double bonds, and single bonds as molecular constituents contribute to the intermolecular potential. Orientation dependent physical properties are described in terms of symmetry-adapted rotator functions. It is found that a same set of rotator functions is sufficient even in the case of a complex molecular structure. Phase transition temperatures are discussed for various models of molecular structure.

Year 1995 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Solid State Chem
Volume 114 Issue 2 Pages 369-378
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The new families of superconducting compounds ''1201'' (Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2CuO4+delta), ''1212'' (Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2(Ca1-x-ySrxPry) Cu2O6+delta), and ''1222'' (Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2(Pr1.7Sr0.3)(2)Cu2O8+delta) all show ordering between praseodymium and mercury in the (Hg,Pr)O-delta plane, reducing the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic or even to monoclinic. In the 1201 compound the ordered superstructure can be described as O-I (a(I) approximate to 2a(p), b(I), approximate to a(p), c(I) approximate to c(1201)). In the 1212 compound two distinct superstructures are identified, O-I (a(I) approximate to 2a(p), b(II) approximate to a(p), c(I) approximate to c(1212)) and O-II (a(II) approximate to 2a(p), b(II) approximate to a(p), c(II) approximate to 2c(1212)). In some compounds, such as Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2(Ca0.4Sr0.4Pr0.2) Cu2O6+delta, the Hg-Pr ordering is only present in microdomains, but due to an ordering between Sr layers and Ca layers, the c-axis doubles and one obtains a tetragonal superstructure T-III (a(III) approximate to a(p), c(III) approximate to 2c(1212)). In the 1222 compound, ordering in the (Pr,Hg)O-delta plane is very defective; a large number of translation defects actually reduce the symmetry to triclinic. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

Abstract Sensitive multi-element analysis techniques were applied to water samples collected in the vicinity of a small Zn-Pb-Cu sulfide mineralization in the region of Menez-Albot (Finistère, France). The variation of the trace-element content along a local stream shows the presence of the mineralization, mainly through a simultaneous positive anomaly in solution for a group of about 10 elements (e.g. Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sb) which are connected with this type of mineralization. The anomaly decreases steeply due to the influx of swamp water rich in Fe, Mn and organic matter. The precipitation barrier is reflected in the stream sediment composition. Contamination from fertilizers was observed in some samples.

Abstract A two-dimensional model is presented that describes the behavior of argon metastable atoms, copper atoms, and copper ions in an argon direct. current glow discharge, in the standard cell of the VG9000 glow discharge mass spectrometer for analyzing flat samples. The model is combined with a previously developed model for the electrons, argon ions, and atoms in the same cell to obtain an overall picture of the glow discharge, The results of the present model comprise the number densities of the described plasma species, the relative contributions of different production and loss processes for the argon metastable atoms, the thermalization profile of the sputtered copper atoms, the relative importance of the different ionization mechanisms for the copper atoms, the ionization degree of copper, the copper ion-to-argon ion density ratio, and the relative roles of copper ions, argon ions, and atoms in the sputtering process. All these quantities are calculated for a range of voltages and pressures, Moreover, since the sticking coefficient of copper atoms on solid surfaces is not well-known in the literature, the influence of this parameter on the results is briefly discussed.

Title In situ infrared and electrical characterization of tin dioxide gas sensors in nitrogen/oxygen mixtures at temperatures up to 720 K Type A1 Journal article
Year 1994 Publication Sensors and actuators : B : chemical Abbreviated Journal
Volume 19 Issue Pages 478-482
Keywords A1 Journal article
Abstract FT-IR spectroscopy and impedance measurements of tin dioxide sensor materials at working temperatures up to 450 °C in atmospheres with varying O2/N2 ratio are used as an in situ probe to study the interactions at the surface of the semiconducting oxide. Every diminution in the oxygen content above the sample induces a broad IR absorption band (X-band) between 2300700 cm−1 with a few small peaks in the 1400850 cm−1 region of the spectrum superimposed on it. The X-band results from the enchanced electron concentration in the bulk of the tin dioxide domain. The fine structure is due to the absorption of several kinds of surface oxygen species associated vibration modes. The porous tin dioxide consists of domains were the outward shell is depleted of electrons by the formation of adsorbed O− species on oxygen surface sites, SO(O− species. In our proposed model for the impedance data this gives rise to a parallel RpCp circuit for the domain boundary characteristics and to an Rs parameter for the intradomain resistance. The evolution of these IR and impedance spectroscopic effects with temperature and oxygen content is used to set up, to confirm and refine a physicochemical operation model of tin dioxide gas sensor. This model consists of a sensitizing reaction sequence in the presence of oxygen and a gas-detection reaction sequence when a reducing gas is present. Based on this model, the principal disadvantages of this type of gas sensor become clear. Every factor that influences the concentration of SO(O−) species, causes a conductance modification. If we can control and direct the nature, the number and the arrangement of the tin dioxide domains, a directed development and improvement of the sensor characteristics is possible.

Abstract Semiconductor gas sensors produced with screen-printing techniques and based on home-made tin dioxide inks are presented. The ink consists of home-made tin dioxide powder added to a polymer solution to make it screen printable on 96% alumina substrates. The major work is performed on the preparation and the characterization of pure undoped tin dioxide powder produced by two different synthetic pathways. Inks prepared with powders from each method are consecutively handled in an identical way to obtain gas sensors. The sensor response towards different gases is measured and compared for both types of starting materials.

Abstract Ammonia is a crucial nutrient used for plant growth and as a building block in pharmaceutical and chemical industry, produced via nitrogen fixation of the ubiquitous atmospheric N2. Current industrial ammonia production relies heavily on fossil resources, but a lot of work is put into developing non-fossil based pathways. Among these is the use of nonequilibrium plasma. In this work, we investigated water vapor as H source for nitrogen fixation into NH3 by non-equilibrium plasma. The highest selectivity towards NH3 was observed with low amounts of added H2O vapor, but the highest production rate was reached at high H2O vapor.

Abstract Neutron diffraction experiments conducted at 5 K in a magnetic field 0 < H/kOe < 50 have shown that the monoclinic perovskite La3Ni2TaO9 behaves as a relaxor ferromagnet. Compositions in the series La3Ni2SbxTayNb1–x–yO9 have been synthesized in polycrystalline form. Electron microscopy, X–ray diffraction and neutron diffraction have shown that the solid solutions are largely homogeneous and monophasic. Magnetometry and neutron diffraction have shown that the relaxor magnetisation persists in low fields when x + y = 1 but is rapidly diminished by the introduction of niobium. This change in magnetic behaviour is ascribed to the differences in the d–orbital energies of Sb5+, Nb5+ and Ta5+.

Title Phase transformation behavior of a two-dimensional zeolite Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Angewandte Chemie: international edition in English Abbreviated Journal

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Understanding the molecular-level mechanisms of phase transformation in solids is of fundamental interest for functional materials such as zeolites. Two-dimensional (2D) zeolites, when used as shape-selective catalysts, can offer improved access to the catalytically active sites and a shortened diffusion length in comparison with their 3D analogues. However, few materials are known to maintain both their intralayer microporosity and structure during calcination for organic structure-directing agent (SDA) removal. Herein we report that PST-9, a new 2D zeolite which has been synthesized via the multiple inorganic cation approach and fulfills the requirements for true layered zeolites, can be transformed into the small-pore zeolite EU-12 under its crystallization conditions through the single-layer folding process, but not through the traditional dissolution/recrystallization route. We also show that zeolite crystal growth pathway can differ according to the type of organic SDAs employed.

Title 2,2′-Diaminodiethylamine cellulose powder for trace metal preconcentrations from water Type A3 Journal article
Year 1984 Publication Fresenius' Zeitschrift für analytische Chemie Abbreviated Journal
Volume 317 Issue 5 Pages 520-526
Keywords A3 Journal article; AXES (Antwerp X-ray Analysis, Electrochemistry and Speciation)
Abstract Cellulose powder with 2,2′-diaminodiethylamine (DEN) functional groups exhibits efficient complexation of transition metal cations. Collection yields above 85 % are obtained up to a chelation capacity of 1.5 meq per gram. Since a good collection is obtained for a pH up from 5, no pH adjustments have to be made for natural water samples. The cellulose-DEN powder is insensitive to abundant substances like alkali and alkaline earth ions, and humic matter. Some cations can be eluted efficiently in a small volume of HNO3. Blank concentration levels from the cellulose-DEN powder are reported.
