Abstract: We report on the preparation of CuBa(2)(Sr(x)Ca(1-x))(n)Cu(n-1)O(y) compounds by fabrication of (Ba,Sr,Ca)CuO(2) superlattices with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). A technique called interval deposition is used to suppress multi-level or island growth resulting in high-quality superlattice structures. Both, the applicability of PLD to atomic engineering as well as the fabrication of artificial superconductors is demonstrated. The (Sr,Ca)CuO(2)-BaCuO(2) superlattices are characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and selected area electron diffraction. The superlattice period has been deduced from electron diffraction patterns and XRD measurements. For Sr containing films, the best growth behavior is observed and films with the highest degree of crystallinity are obtained, whereas superconductivity is only found in less crystalline, Ca containing films. Under some deposition conditions and depending on the amount of Ba containing layers in the superlattice, it was observed that the BaCuO(2) material is converted to Ba(2)CuO(4-delta). Image simulations to interpret the HREM contrast are performed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We studied the structural and spectral properties of a classical system consisting of a finite number of particles, moving in two dimensions, and interacting through a repulsive logarithmic potential and held together by an anisotropic harmonic potential. Increasing the anisotropy of the confinement potential can drive the system from a two-dimensional (2D) to a one-dimensional (1D) configuration. This change occurs through a sequence of structural transitions of first and second order which are reflected in the normal mode frequencies. Our results of the ground state configurations are compared with recent experiments and we obtained a satisfactory agreement. The transition from the 1D line structure to the 2D structure occurs through a zigzag transition which is of second order. We found analytical expressions for the eigenfrequencies before the zigzag transition, which allowed us to obtain an analytical expression for the anisotropy parameter at which the zigzag transition occurs as a function of the number of particles in the system.

Abstract: Fe(2)C plays a crucial role in the precipitation of iron carbides. Jack's structural models for epsilon-Fe(2)C, and non-stoichiometric epsilon-Fe(2.4)C, are analyzed using first-principles calculations. Several new configurations of epsilon-Fe(2)C with even higher stability are found. We show how epsilon-Fe(2)C transforms into eta-Fe(2)C, and address the structural relationships with the chi-Fe(5)C(2), theta-Fe(3)C and Fe(7)C(3) phases. The relative occurrence of these phases in steel, as well as their probable evolution during tempering of quenched steels, is discussed. (C) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: We study the mixing of two different kinds of particles, having different charge and/or mass, interacting through a pure Coulomb potential, and confined in a parabolic trap. The structure of the cluster and its normal mode spectrum are analyzed as a function of the ratio of the charges (mass ratio) of the two types of particles. We show that particles are not always arranged in a shell structure. Mixing of the particles goes hand in hand with a large number of metastable states. The normal modes of the system are obtained, and we find that some of the special modes can be tuned by varying the ratio between the charges (masses) of the two species. The degree of mixing of the two type of particles is summarized in a phase diagram, and an order parameter that describes quantitatively the mixing between particles is defined.

Abstract: The structural properties of a binary colloidal quasi-one-dimensional system confined in a narrow channel are investigated through modified Monte Carlo simulations. Two species of particles with different magnetic moment interact through a repulsive dipole-dipole force are confined in a quasi-one-dimensional channel. The impact of three decisive parameters (the density of particles, the magnetic-moment ratio, and the fraction between the two species) on the transition from disordered phase to crystal-like phases and the transitions among the different mixed phases are summarized in a phase diagram.

Abstract: Topotactic reduction of La1-xSrxMnO3 (0.67 <= x <= 1) phases with sodium hydride yields a series of isoelectronic materials of composition La1-xSrxMnO3-(0.5+x)/2. Lanthanum rich members of the series (0.67 <= x <= 0.83) adopt anion deficient perovskite structures with a 6-layer -OTOOT'O- stacking sequence of sheets of octahedra/square-based pyramids (O) and sheets of tetrahedra (T). The strontium rich members of the series (0.83 <= x <= 1) incorporate “step defects” into this 6-layer structure in which the OTOOT'O stacking sequence is converted into either OOTOOT' or TOOT'OO at a defect plane which runs perpendicular to the [201] lattice plane. The step defects appear to provide a mechanism to relieve lattice strain and accommodate additional anion deficiency in phases with x > 0.83. Magnetization and neutron diffraction data indicate La1-xSrxMnO3-(0.5+x)/2 phases adopt antiferromagnetically ordered states at low-temperature in which the ordered arrangement of magnetic spins is incommensurate with the crystallographic lattice.

Abstract: The structure and texture formation in CuAlNi thin films of different thicknesses (1 μm to 5 μm) grown by DC magnetron sputtering without any intentional heating of the substrate are reported. The as-grown films present grains with an average size of 20 nm. The films with thickness of 1 μm have a single metastable phase with a hexagonal structure and are textured with planes (0002) parallel to the plane of the films. It was observed that thicker films present phase coexistence between metastable hexagonal and body centered cubic structures with a gradual increment of the body centered cubic phase fraction. The films with thickness of 5 μm are textured with planes (0002) and View the MathML source101¯0 in the hexagonal structure, whereas in the body centered cubic structure the films are textured with {110} planes parallel to the plane of the films. This fact can be associated with self-heating of the substrate during the growth of the films and with the relative stability of the metastable phases. Free standing films annealed in a second step (1123 K for 1 h) present austenitic phase with L21 structure and sub-micrometric grains textured with {220}L21 planes parallel to the plane of the films. The martensitic transformation temperature was determined from the analysis of resistance against temperature measurements.
