Abstract: The spin-polarized transport property of a diluted magnetic semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas is investigated theoretically at low temperature. A large current polarization can be found in this system even at small magnetic fields and oscillates with increasing magnetic field while the carrier polarization is vanishingly small. The magnitude as well as the sign of the current polarization can be tuned by varying magnetic field, the electron density and the Mn concentration. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The split diffuse maxima around the {110} and {100} positions in the diffraction pattern of short-range-ordered Cu1-xPdx alloys (x=0.10...0.60) are attributed to small atomic clusters, being part of the underlying fee lattice. By analyzing the reciprocal space geometry, our cluster method identifies two prominent cluster types: the tetrahedron of nearest neighbors and a linear three-points cluster along the [110] directions. Since both cluster types contain different information on the same nearest-neighbor correlations, local anisotropy has to be assumed. It is shown that the three interatomic pair interactions within these basic clusters are sufficient to generate the spot splitting in the diffraction pattern. A ground-state analysis with these interactions reproduces the results of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising model.

Abstract: The spontaneous chemical alteration of artists' pigment materials may be caused by several degradation processes. Some of these are well known while others are still in need of more detailed investigation and documentation. These changes often become apparent as color modifications, either caused by a change in the oxidation state in the original material or the formation of degradation products or salts, via simple or more complex, multistep reactions. Arsenic-based pigments such as orpiment (As2S3) or realgar (alpha-As4S4) are prone to such alterations and are often described as easily oxidizing upon exposure to light. Macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) imaging on a sub area of a still life painting by the 17th century Dutch painter Martinus Nellius was employed in combination with microscopic (mu-) XRPD imaging of a paint cross section taken in the area imaged by MA-XRPD. In this way, the in situ formation of secondary metal arsenate and sulfate species and their migration through the paint layer stack they originate from could be visualized. In the areas originally painted with orpiment, it could be shown that several secondary minerals such as schultenite (PbHAsO4), mimetite (Pb-5(AsO4)(3)Cl), palmierite (K2Pb(SO4)(2)) and syngenite (K2Ca(SO4)(2)center dot H2O) have formed. Closer inspection of the cross-sectioned paint layer stack with mu-XRPD illustrates that the arsenate minerals schultenite and mimetite have precipitated at the interface between the orpiment layer and the layer below that is rich in lead white, i.e. close to the depth of formation of the arsenate ions. The sulfate palmierite has mostly precipitated at the surface and upper layers of the painting.

Abstract: The St. Michael Archangel's Church in Szalowa, Poland, was selected for closer investigation with respect to the indoor/outdoor air exchange and its influence on the air quality and work arts preservation. Chemical composition, size and abundance of particulate matter and concentration of gases NO2, SO2, O-3 inside and outside the church were determined. To study seasonal variation of the weather condition (temperature, inversion level, wind direction) and the influence of seasonal sources of the air pollution (like heating of the nearby houses), samples were collected in winter and summer time. It was stated that suspended particulate matter inside the wooden church has in general an outdoor source. Several groups of particles were distinguished such as the organic ones, soil dust, nitrates and sulphates. In case of organic and soil dust particles, the concentration inside was higher than outside. From the results, in comparison to literature data, one can conclude that accumulation of particulate suspended matter in the church is more intense than in other types of buildings. Gaseous pollutants were detected but their concentration was negligible.

Abstract: The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly. Abstract: The state-of-the-science in sustainability assessment of soil and groundwater remediation is evaluated with the application of four decision support systems (DSSs) to a large-scale brownfield revitalization case study. The DSSs were used to perform sustainability appraisals of four technically feasible remediation alternatives proposed for the site. The first stage of the review compares the scope of each tool's sustainability indicators, how these indicators are measured and how the tools differ in terms of standardization and weighting procedures. The second stage of the review compares the outputs from the tools and determines the key factors that result in differing results between tools. The evaluation of indicator sets and tool structures explains why the tools generate differing results. Not all crucial impact areas, as identified by sustainable remediation forums, are thoroughly considered by the tools, particularly with regard to the social and economic aspects of sustainability. Variations in boundary conditions defined between technologies, produce distorted environmental impact results, especially when in-situ and ex-situ technologies are compared. The review draws attention to the need for end users to be aware of which aspects of sustainability are considered, how the aspects are measured and how all aspects are ultimately balanced in the evaluation of potential remediation strategies. Existing tools can be improved by considering different technologies within the same boundary conditions and by expanding indicator sets to include indicators deemed to be relevant by remediation forums. Abstract: The strain fields of periodically buckled graphene induce a periodic pseudomagnetic field (PMF) that modifies the electronic band structure. From the geometry, amplitude, and period of the periodic pseudomagnetic field, we determine the necessary conditions to access the regime of correlated phases by examining the band flattening. As compared to twisted bilayer graphene the proposed system has the advantages that (1) only a single layer of graphene is needed, (2) one is not limited to hexagonal superlattices, and (3) narrower flat bandwidth and larger separation between flat bands can be induced. We, therefore, propose that periodically strained graphene single layers can become a platform for the exploration of exotic many-body phases.

Abstract: The strain-induced pseudomagnetic field in supported graphene deposited on top of a nanostructured substrate is investigated by using atomistic simulations. A step, an elongated trench, a one-dimensional barrier, a spherical bubble, a Gaussian bump, and a Gaussian depression are considered as support structures for graphene. From the obtained optimum configurations we found very strong induced pseudomagnetic fields which can reach up to similar to 1000 T due to the strain-induced deformations in the supported graphene. Different magnetic confinements with controllable geometries are found by tuning the pattern of the substrate. The resulting induced magnetic fields for graphene on top of a step, barrier, and trench are calculated. In contrast to the step and trench the middle part of graphene on top of a barrier has zero pseudomagnetic field. This study provides a theoretical background for designing magnetic structures in graphene by nanostructuring substrates. We found that altering the radial symmetry of the deformation changes the sixfold symmetry of the induced pseudomagnetic field.

Abstract: The strength of the (Rashba-type) spin-orbit coupling in mesoscopic semiconductor rings can be tuned with external gate voltages. Here we consider the case of a periodically changing spin-orbit interaction strength in time as induced by sinusoidal voltages. In a closed one dimensional quantum ring with weak spin-orbit coupling, Rabi oscillations are shown to appear. We find that the time evolution of initially localized wave packets exhibits a series of collapse and revival phenomena. Partial revivalsthat are typical in nonlinear systemsare shown to correspond to superpositions of states localized at different spatial positions along the ring. These spintronic Schrödinger-cat states appear periodically, and similarly to their counterparts in other physical systems, they are found to be sensitive to disturbances caused by the environment. The time-dependent spin transport problem, when leads are attached to the ring, is also solved. We show that the sideband currents induced by the oscillating spin-orbit interaction strength can become the dominant output channel, even in the presence of moderate thermal fluctuations and random scattering events.

Abstract: The strong effect of low temperatures on anammox challenges its mainstream application over the winter in temperate climates. Winter bioaugmentation with stored summer surplus sludge is a potential solution to guarantee sufficient nitrogen removal in winter. Firstly, the systems for which nitrogen removal deteriorated by the temperature decrease (25 °C → 20 °C) could be fully restored bioaugmenting with granules resp. flocs stored for 6 months at 118 resp. 220% of the initial biomass levels. Secondly, the reactivation of these stored sludges was tested in lower temperature systems (15.3 ± 0.4/10.4 ± 0.4 °C). Compared to the activity before storage, between 56% and 41% of the activity of granules was restored within one month, and 41%–32% for flocs. Additionally, 85–87% of granules and 50–53% of flocs were retained in the systems. After reactivation (15.3 ± 0.4/10.4 ± 0.4 °C), a more specialized community was formed (diversity decreased) with Candidatus Brocadia still dominant in terms of relative abundance. Capital and operating expenditures (CAPEX, OPEX) were negligible, representing only 0.19–0.36% of sewage treatment costs.

Abstract: The structural and mechanical properties of N-doped graphene (NG) are investigated using reactive force field (ReaxFF) potentials in large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. We found that ripples, which are induced by the dopants, change the roughness of NG, which depends on the number of dopants and their local arrangement. For any doping ratio N/C, the NG becomes ferroelectric with a net dipole moment. The formation energy increases nonlinearly with N/C ratio, while the Young's modulus, tensile strength, and intrinsic strain decrease with the number of dopants. Our results for the structural deformation and the thermoelectricity of the NG sheet are in good agreement with recent experiments and ab initio calculations.

Abstract: The structural and transport properties of YBa2Cu3O7−x films grown by pulsed laser deposition with mixed 2.5 mol% Ba2YTaO6 (BYTO) and 2.5 mol% Ba2YNbO6 (BYNO) double-perovskite secondary phases are investigated in an extended film growth rate, R = 0.02–1.8 nm s−1. The effect of R on the film microstructure analyzed by TEM techniques shows an evolution from sparse and straight to denser, thinner and splayed continuous columns, with mixed BYNO + BYTO (BYNTO) composition, as R increases from 0.02 nm s−1 to 1.2 nm s−1. This microstructure results in very efficient flux pinning at 77 K, leading to a remarkable improvement in the critical current density (J c) behaviour, with the maximum pinning force density F p(Max) = 13.5 GN m−3 and the irreversibility field in excess of 11 T. In this range, the magnetic field values at which the F p is maximized varies from 1 T to 5 T, being related to the BYNTO columnar density. The film deposited when R = 0.3 nm s−1 exhibits the best performances over the whole temperature and magnetic field ranges, achieving F p(Max) = 900 GN m−3 at 10 K and 12 T. At higher rates, R > 1.2 nm s−1, BYNTO columns show a meandering nature and are prone to form short nanorods. In addition, in the YBCO film matrix a more disordered structure with a high density of short stacking faults is observed. From the analysis of the F p(H, T) curves it emerges that in films deposited at the high R limit, the vortex pinning is no longer dominated by BYNTO columnar defects, but by a new mechanism showing the typical temperature scaling law. Even though this microstructure produces a limited improvement at 77 K, it exhibits a strong J c improvement at lower temperature with F p = 700 GN m−3 at 10 K, 12 T and 900 GN m−3 at 4.2 K, 18 T.

Abstract: The structural and vibrational properties of two-dimensional hexagonal silicon (silicene) and germanium (germanene) are investigated by means of first-principles calculations. It is predict that the silicene (germanene) structure with a small buckling of 0.44 (0.7 ) and bond lengths of 2.28 (2.44 ) is energetically the most favorable, and it does not exhibit imaginary phonon mode. The calculated non-resonance Raman spectra of silicene is characterized by a main peak at about 575 cm(-1), namely the G-like peak. For germanene, the highest peak is at about 290 cm(-1). Extensive calculations on armchair silicene nanoribbons and armchair germanene nanoribbons are also performed, with and without hydrogenation of the edges. The studies reveal other Raman peaks mainly distributed at lower frequencies than the G-like peak which could be attributed to the defects at the edges of the ribbons, thus not present in the Raman spectra of non-defective silicene and germanene. Particularly the Raman peak corresponding to the D mode is found to be located at around 515 cm(-1) for silicene and 270 cm(-1) for germanene. The calculated G-like and the D peaks are likely the fingerprints of the Raman spectra of the low-buckled structures of silicene and germanene.

Abstract: The structural modification of ssDNA-based aptamers upon specific binding of its target molecule leads to changes of the charge-transfer resistance (Rct) of a negatively-charged free-diffusing redox probe. The aptamer adopts a structure due to self-hybridization which is stabilized using profalvine as intercalator. The pre-organized aptamer structure is used to detect chloramphenicol (CAP) requiring a substantial change of the aptamer structure indicated by a CAP concentration dependent increase in the Rct values. Pre-incubation of the aptamer-modified electrode with an intercalator allows for the modulation of the aptamer/target interaction and hence for a modulation of the CAP-dependent variation of the Rct values.

Abstract: The structural properties of a binary colloidal quasi-one-dimensional system confined in a narrow channel are investigated through modified Monte Carlo simulations. Two species of particles with different magnetic moment interact through a repulsive dipole-dipole force are confined in a quasi-one-dimensional channel. The impact of three decisive parameters (the density of particles, the magnetic-moment ratio, and the fraction between the two species) on the transition from disordered phase to crystal-like phases and the transitions among the different mixed phases are summarized in a phase diagram.
