Abstract (down) A new class of irregularly shaped dielectric lens antennas with a supershaped microstrip antenna feeder is presented and detailed in this work. The surface of the lens antenna and the feeder shape have been modelled by using the three and two-dimensional Gielis formula, respectively. The antenna design has been carried out by integrating an home-made software tool with the CST Microwave Studio®. The radiation properties of the whole antenna system have been evaluated using a dedicated high-frequency technique based on the tube tracing approximation. Moreover, the effects due to the multiple internal reflections have been properly modeled. The proposed model was applied to study unusual and complex lens antenna systems with the aim to design special radiation characteristics.

Abstract (down) A new approach to synthesize valuable 3,4-dialkoxyanilines and alkyl propionates from lignin-derived 4-propylguaiacol and -catechol with overall isolated yields up to 65% has been described. The strategy is based on the introduction of nitrogen via a Beckmann rearrangement. Amino introduction therefore coincides with a C-defunctionalization reaction; overall a replacement of the propyl chain by an amino group is obtained. The process only requires cheap bulk chemicals as reagents/reactants and does not involve column chromatography to purify the reaction products. Furthermore, all carbon atoms from the biorenewable lignin-derived monomers are transformed into valuable compounds. Greenness was assessed by performing a Green Metrics analysis on two dialkoxyanilines. A comparison was made with literature routes for these compounds starting from a petrochemical substrate.

Abstract (down) A gliding arc plasmatron (GAP), which is very promising for purification and gas conversion,

is characterized in nitrogen using optical emission spectroscopy and high-speed photography,

because the cross sections of electron impact excitation of N 2 are well known. The gas

temperature (of about 5500 K), the electron density (up to 1.5 × 10 15 cm −3 ) and the reduced

electric field (of about 37 Td) are determined using an absolutely calibrated intensified charge-

coupled device (ICCD) camera, equipped with an in-house made optical arrangement for

simultaneous two-wavelength diagnostics, adapted to the transient behavior of a GA channel

in turbulent gas flow. The intensities of nitrogen molecular emission bands, N 2 (C–B,0–0) as

well as N +

2 (B–X,0–0), are measured simultaneously. The electron density and the reduced

electric field are determined at a spatial resolution of 30 µm, using numerical simulation and

measured emission intensities, applying the Abel inversion of the ICCD images. The temporal

behavior of the GA plasma channel and the formation of plasma plumes are studied using a

high-speed camera. Based on the determined plasma parameters, we suggest that the plasma

plume formation is due to the magnetization of electrons in the plasma channel of the GAP by

an axial magnetic field in the plasma vortex.

Abstract (down) A four-band exciton Hamiltonian is constructed starting from the single-particle Dirac Hamiltonian for charge carriers in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The angular part of the exciton wave function can be separated from the radial part, in the case of zero center of mass momentum excitons, by exploiting the eigenstates of the total exciton angular momentum operator with which the Hamiltonian commutes. We explain why this approach fails for excitons with finite center of mass momentum or in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and present an approximation to resolve this issue. We calculate the (binding) energy and average interparticle distance of different excited exciton states in different TMDs and compare these with results available in the literature. Remarkably, we find that the intervalley exciton ground state in the -/+ K valley has angular momentum j = +/- 1, which is due to the pseudospin of the separate particles. The exciton mass and the exciton Landau levels are calculated and we find that the degeneracy of exciton states with opposite relative angular momentum is altered by a magnetic field.

Abstract (down) A detailed microstructural examination endeavoring to understand the interfacial phenomena yielding to cohesion

in solid-state assembling processes was performed. This study focuses on the transition zone of a dissimilar

titanium alloy joint obtained by Linear Friction Welding (LFW) the β-metastable Ti17 to the near-α

Ti6242. The transition zone delimitating both alloys is characterized by a sharp microstructure change from

acicular HCP (Hexagonal Close-Packed) α′ martensitic laths in the Ti6242 to equiaxed BCC β (Body-Centered

Cubic) subgrains in the Ti17; these α′ plates were shown to precipitate within prior-β subgrains remarkably more

rotated than the ones formed in the Ti17. Both α′ and β microstructures were found to be intermingled within

transitional subgrains demarcating a limited gradient from one chemical composition to the other. These peculiar

interfacial grains revealed that the cohesive mechanisms between the rubbing surfaces occurred in the

single-phase β domain under severe strain and high-temperature conditions. During the hot deformation process,

the mutual migration of the crystalline interfaces from one material to another assisted by a continuous dynamic

recrystallization process was identified as the main adhesive mechanism at the junction zone. The latter led to

successful cohesion between the rubbing surfaces. Once the reciprocating motion stopped, fast cooling caused

both materials to experience either a βlean→α′ or βlean→βmetastable transformation in the interfacial zone depending

on their local chemical composition. The limited process time and the subsequent hindered chemical

homogenization at the transition zone led to retaining the so-called intermingled α’/βm subgrains constituting

the border between both Ti-alloys.

Abstract (down) A biomimetic sensor for cefquinome (CFQ) was designed at multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified graphite screen-printed electrodes (MWCNTs-G-SPEs) as a proof-of-concept for the creation of a sensors array for beta-lactam antibiotics detection in milk. The sensitive and selective detection of antibiotic residues in food and environment is a fundamental step in the elaboration of prevention strategies to fight the insurgence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as recommended by authorities around the world (EU, WHO, FDA). The detection strategy is based on the characteristic electrochemical fingerprint of the target antibiotic cefquinome. A conducive electropolymerized molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coupled with MWCNTs was found to be the optimal electrode modifier, able to provide an increased selectivity and sensitivity for CFQ detection. The design of CFQ-MIP was facilitated by the rational selection of the monomer, 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA). The electropolymerization process of 4-ABA have not been fully elucidated yet; for this reason a thorough study and optimization of electropolymerization conditions was performed to obtain a conducive and stable poly(4-ABA) film. The modified electrodes were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). CFQ-MIP were synthesized at MWCNT-G-SPEs by electropolyrnerization in pH approximate to 1 (0.1 M sulphuric acid) with a monomer:template ratio of 5:1. Two different analytical protocols were tested (single and double step detection) to minimize unspecific adsorptions and improve the sensitivity. Under optimal conditions, the lowest CFQ concentration detectable by square wave voltammetry (SWV) at the modified sensor was 50 nM in 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 2.

Abstract (down) 2D ternary systems provide another degree of freedom of tuning physical properties through stoichiometry variation. However, the controllable growth of 2D ternary materials remains a huge challenge that hinders their practical applications. Here, for the first time, by using a gallium/indium liquid alloy as the precursor, the synthesis of high-quality 2D ternary Ga2In4S9 flakes of only a few atomic layers thick (approximate to 2.4 nm for the thinnest samples) through chemical vapor deposition is realized. Their UV-light-sensing applications are explored systematically. Photodetectors based on the Ga2In4S9 flakes display outstanding UV detection ability (R-lambda = 111.9 A W-1, external quantum efficiency = 3.85 x 10(4)%, and D* = 2.25 x 10(11) Jones@360 nm) with a fast response speed (tau(ring) approximate to 40 ms and tau(decay) approximate to 50 ms). In addition, Ga2In4S9-based phototransistors exhibit a responsivity of approximate to 10(4) A W-1@360 nm above the critical back-gate bias of approximate to 0 V. The use of the liquid alloy for synthesizing ultrathin 2D Ga2In4S9 nanostructures may offer great opportunities for designing novel 2D optoelectronic materials to achieve optimal device performance.

Abstract (down) 2D polyaniline, C3N, is of recent high interest due to its unusual properties and potential use in various technological applications. In this work, through systematic first-principles calculations, the atomic, electronic, and magnetic structure of C3N and the changes induced due to functionalization by the adsorption of hydrogen, oxygen, and fluorine, for different coverages and sites, as well as on formation of nanoribbons including the effect of adsorbed hydrogen and oxygen, and the effect of strain, are investigated. Among other interesting phenomena, for hydrogen adsorption, a semiconductor-to-topological insulator transition, where two Dirac-points appear around the Fermi level, as well as ferromagnetic ordering for both hydrogen and oxygen functionalization, is identified. Considering C3N nanoribbons, adsorption of H leads to significant changes in the electronic properties, such as transforming the structures from semiconductor to metallic. Furthermore, investigating the effect of strain on the physical properties, it is found that the band gap can be significantly altered and controlled. The present findings predict that a wide variation in the magnetic and electronic structure of C3N can be achieved by adatom functionalization and conformation indicating its high potential for use in various technological applications, ranging from catalysis, energy storage, and nanoelectronic devices.
