Abstract: The noncentrosymmetric tungstate oxide, Ce18W10O57) was synthesized for the first time as high-quality single crystals via the molten chloride flux method and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound is a structural analogue to the previously reported La18W10O57, which crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P (6) over bar 2c. The +3 oxidation state of cerium in Ce18W10O57 was achieved via the in situ reduction of Ce(IV) to Ce(III) using Zn metal. The structure consists of both isolated and face-shared WO6 octahedra and, surprisingly, isolated WO6 trigonal prisms. A careful analysis of the packing arrangement in the structure makes it possible to explain the unusual structural architecture of Ce18W10O57, which is described in detail. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility of Ce18W10O57 indicates that the cerium(III) f(1) cations do not order magnetically and exhibit simple paramagnetic behavior. The SHG efficiency of Ln(18)W(10)O(57) (Ln = La, Ce) was measured as a function of particle size, and both compounds were found to be SHG active with efficiency approximately equal to that of alpha-SiO2.

Abstract: The Ni3-xGaTe2 series of compounds (0 x 0.65) was synthesized by a high-temperature ceramic technique at 750 °C. Crystal structures of three compounds in the series were determined by X-ray powder diffraction: Ni2.98(1)GaTe2 (RI = 0.042, Rp = 0.023, Rwp = 0.035), Ni2.79(1)GaTe2 (RI = 0.053, Rp = 0.028, Rwp = 0.039), Ni2.58(1)GaTe2 (RI = 0.081, Rp = 0.037, Rwp = 0.056); the structures were verified by electron diffraction and, for the former compound, high-resolution electron microscopy. The compounds crystallize in a hexagonal lattice with P63/mmc, and the structures can be regarded as a hexagonal close-packed array with a -Ga-Te-Te- stacking sequence. The octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal voids in the hcp structure are selectively filled with Ni atoms to form one entirely occupied and two partially occupied sites, thus allowing variations in the nickel content in the series of compounds Ni3-xGaTe2 (0 x 0.65). A superstructure with asup = 2asub (P63/mmc) has been identified for Ni3-xGaTe2 (0.5 x 0.65) by electron diffraction. Real-space, high-resolution images confirm an ordering of Ni atoms and vacancies inthe ab plane. Quantum-chemical calculations performed forNi3-xGaTe2 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.75, 1) suggest anisotropic metallic conductivity and Pauli paramagnetic behavior that are experimentally confirmed for Ni3GaTe2.

Abstract: The new European Council Directive (PE-CONS 3696/07) frames the inhalable (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5) on priority to chemically characterize these fractions in order to understand their possible relation with health effects. Considering this, PM2.5 was collected during four different seasons to evaluate the relative abundance of bulk elements (Cl, S, Si, Al, Br, Cu, Fe, Ti, Ca, K, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cr and V) and water soluble ions (F−, Cl−, NO2 −, NO3 −, SO4 2−, Na+, NH4 +, Ca2+ and Mg2+) over Menen, a Belgian city near the French border. The air quality over Menen is influenced by industrialized regions on both sides of the border. The most abundant ionic species were NO3 −, SO4 2− and NH4 +, and they showed distinct seasonal variation. The elevated levels of NO3 − during spring and summer were found to be related to the larger availability of the NOx precursor. The various elemental species analyzed were distinguished into crustal and anthropogenic source categories. The dominating elements were S and Cl in the PM2.5 particles. The anthropogenic fraction (e.g. Zn, Pb, and Cu) shows a more scattered abundance. Furthermore, the ions and elemental data were also processed using principal component analysis and cluster analysis to identify their sources and chemistry. These approach identifies anthropogenic (traffic and industrial) emissions as a major source for fine particles. The variations in the natural/anthropogenic fractions of PM2.5 were also found to be a function of meteorological conditions as well as of long-range transport of air masses from the industrialized regions of the continent.

Abstract: The new complex germanates RCrGeO5 (R=NdEr, Y) have been synthesized and investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. All the compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the orthorhombic symmetry, space group Pbam, and Z=4. The crystal structure of RCrGeO5, as refined using X-ray powder diffraction data, includes infinite chains built by edge-sharing Cr+3O6 octahedra with two alternating Cr−Cr distances. The chains are combined into a three-dimensional framework by Ge2O8 groups consisting of two edge-linked square pyramids oriented in opposite directions. The resulting framework contains pentagonal channels where rare-earth elements are located. Thus, RCrGeO5 germanates present new examples of RMn2O5-type compounds and show ordering of Cr+3 and Ge+4 cations. Electron diffraction as well as high-resolution electron microscopy confirm the structure solution. Magnetic susceptibility data for R=Nd, Sm, and Eu are qualitatively consistent with the presence of isolated 3d (antiferromagnetically coupled Cr+3 cations) and 4f (R+3) spin subsystems in the RCrGeO5 compounds. NdCrGeO5 undergoes long-range magnetic ordering at 2.6 K, while SmCrGeO5 and EuCrGeO5 do not show any phase transitions down to 2 K.

Abstract: The nature of the low-temperature photochemical assisted formation process of ferroelectric lead titanate (PbTiO3) films is studied in the present work. Films are obtained by the deposition of an aqueous solution containing citric acid based (citrato) metal ion complexes with intrinsic UV activity. This UV activity is crucial for the aqueous photochemical solution deposition (aqueous PCSD) route being used. UV irradiation enhances the early decomposition of organics and results in improved electrical properties for the crystalline oxide film, even if the film is crystallized at low temperature. GATR-FTIR shows that UV irradiation promotes the decomposition of organic precursor components, resulting in homogeneous films if applied in the right temperature window during film processing. The organic content, morphology and crystallinity of the irradiated films, achieved at different processing atmospheres and temperatures, is studied and eventually correlated to the functional behavior of the obtained films. This is an important issue, as crystalline films obtained at low temperatures often lack ferroelectric responses. In this work, the film prepared in pure oxygen at the very low temperature of 400 degrees C and after an optimized UV treatment presents a significant remanent polarization value of P-r = 8.8 mu C cm(-2). This value is attributed to the better crystallinity, the larger grain size and the reduced porosity obtained thanks to the early film crystallization effectively achieved through the UV treatment in oxygen. Abstract: The n = 3-6 members of a new perovskite-based homologous series Bi(3n+1)Ti7Fe(3n-3)O(9n+11) are reported. The crystal structure of the n = 3 Bi10Ti7Fe6O38 member is refined using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data (a = 11.8511(2) A, b = 3.85076(4) A, c = 33.0722(6) A, S.G. Immm), unveiling the partially ordered distribution of Ti(4+) and Fe(3+) cations and indicating the presence of static random displacements of the Bi and O atoms. All Bi(3n+1)Ti7Fe(3n-3)O(9n+11) structures are composed of perovskite blocks separated by translational interfaces parallel to the (001)p perovskite planes. The thickness of the perovskite blocks increases with n, while the atomic arrangement at the interfaces remains the same. The interfaces comprise chains of double edge-sharing (Fe,Ti)O6 octahedra connected to the octahedra of the perovskite blocks by sharing edges and corners. This configuration shifts the adjacent perovskite blocks relative to each other over a vector (1/2)[110]p and creates S-shaped tunnels along the [010] direction. The tunnels accommodate double columns of the Bi(3+) cations, which stabilize the interfaces owing to the stereochemical activity of their lone electron pairs. The Bi(3n+1)Ti7Fe(3n-3)O(9n+11) structures can be formally considered either as intergrowths of perovskite modules and polysynthetically twinned modules of the Bi2Ti4O11 structure or as intergrowths of the 2D perovskite and 1D anatase fragments. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on Bi10Ti7Fe6O38 reveals that static atomic displacements of Bi and O inside the perovskite blocks are not completely random; they are cooperative, yet only short-range ordered. According to TEM, the interfaces can be laterally shifted with respect to each other over +/-1/3a, introducing an additional degree of disorder. Bi10Ti7Fe6O38 is paramagnetic in the 1.5-1000 K temperature range due to dilution of the magnetic Fe(3+) cations with nonmagnetic Ti(4+). The n = 3, 4 compounds demonstrate a high dielectric constant of 70-165 at room temperature.

Abstract: The most efficient use of spatial volume and the lowest potential energies in the metal oxide structures are based on cubic close packing (ccp) or hexagonal close packing (hcp) of anions with cations occupying the interstices. A promising way to tune the composition of close packed oxides and design new compounds is related to fragmenting the parent structure into modules by periodically spaced planar interfaces, such as twin planes at the unit cell scale. The unique crystal chemistry properties of cations with a lone electron pair, such as Bi3+ or Pb2+, when located at interfaces, enables them to act as chemical scissors, to help relieve configurational strain. With this approach, we synthesized a new oxide, BiMnFe2O6, where fragments of the hypothetical hcp oxygen-based MO structure (the NiAs structure type), for the first time, serve as the building modules in a complex transition metal oxide. Mn3+ and Fe3+ ions are randomly distributed in two crystallographically independent sites (M1 and M2). The structure consists of quasi two-dimensional blocks of the 2H hexagonal close packed MO structure cut along the (114) crystal plane of the hcp lattice and stacked along the c axis. The blocks are related by a mirror operation that allows BiMnFe2O6 to be considered as a polysynthetically twinned 2H hcp MO structure. The transition to an AFM state with an incommensurate spin configuration at [similar] 212 K is established by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and low temperature powder neutron diffraction.

Abstract: The mineral Zlatogorite, CuNiSb2, was synthesized in the laboratory for the first time by annealing elements at ambient pressure (CuNiSb2-AP). Rietveld refinement of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data indicates that CuNiSb2-AP crystallizes in the NiAs-derived structure (P (3) over bar m1, #164) with Cu and Ni ordering. The structure consists of alternate NiSb6 and CuSb6 octahedral layers via face-sharing. The formation of such structure instead of metal disordered NiAs-type structure (P6(3)/mmc, #194) is validated by the lower energy of the ordered phase by first-principle calculations. Interatomic crystal orbital Hamilton population, electron localization function, and charge density analysis reveal strong Ni-Sb, Cu-Sb, and Cu-Ni bonding and long weak Sb-Sb interactions in CuNiSb2-AP. The magnetic measurement indicates that CuNiSb2-AP is Pauli paramagnetic. First-principle calculations and experimental electrical resistivity measurements reveal that CuNiSb2-AP is a metal. The low Seebeck coefficient and large thermal conductivity suggest that CuNiSb2 is not a potential thermoelectric material. Single crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport. The high pressure sample (CuNiSb2-8 GPa) was prepared by pressing CuNiSb2-AP at 700 degrees C and 8 GPa. However, the structures of single crystal and CuNiSb2-8 GPa are best fit with a disordered metal structure in the P (3) over bar m1 space group, corroborated by transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract: The microporous zeolitic imidazolate framework [Zn(MeIM)2; ZIF-8; MeIM = imidazolate-2-methyl] was quantitatively loaded with trimethylamine gallane [(CH3)3NGaH3]. The obtained inclusion compound [(CH3)3NGaH3]@ZIF-8 reveals three precursor molecules per host cavity. Treatment with ammonia selectively yields the caged cyclotrigallazane intermediate (H2GaNH2)3@ZIF-8, and further annealing gives GaN@ZIF-8. This new composite material was characterized with FT-IR spectroscopy, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, (scanning) transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and N2 sorption measurements. The data give evidence for the presence of GaN nanoparticles (13 nm) embedded in the cavities of ZIF-8, including a blue-shift of the PL emission band caused by the quantum size effect.

Abstract: The melting of fluorographene is very unusual and depends strongly on the degree of fluorination. For temperatures below 1000 K, fully fluorinated graphene (FFG) is thermomechanically more stable than graphene but at T-m approximate to 2800 K FFG transits to random coils which is almost 2 times lower than the melting temperature of graphene, i.e., 5300 K. For fluorinated graphene up to 30% ripples causes detachment of individual F-atoms around 2000 K, while for 40%-60% fluorination large defects are formed beyond 1500 K and beyond 60% of fluorination F-atoms remain bonded to graphene until melting. The results agree with recent experiments on the dependence of the reversibility of the fluorination process on the percentage of fluorination.

Abstract: The mechanism allowing the transition from a two-dimensional strained layer of CdSe on ZnSe to self-assembled islands induced by the use of amorphous selenium is still not fully understood. For a better understanding, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies were performed on CdSe films with a thickness close to that for quantum dot formation. Below this thickness, the sample surface results in undulations along the [110] crystal direction, while few quantum dots are situated in the wave valleys. Plan view transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a strong anisotropy of the islands and show that the Se desorption conditions are crucial. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The low-temperature topotactic reduction of La0.33Sr0.67MnO3 with NaH results in the formation of La0.33Sr0.67MnO2.42. A combination of neutron powder and electron diffraction data show that La0.33Sr0.67MnO2.42 adopts a novel anion-vacancy ordered structure with a 6-layer OOTOOT' stacking sequence of the octahedral and tetrahedral layers (Pcmb, a=5.5804(1) Å, b=23.4104(7) Å, c=11.2441(3) Å). A significant concentration of anion vacancies at the anion site, which links neighbouring octahedral layers means that only 25% of the octahedral manganese coordination sites actually have 6-fold MnO6 coordination, the remainder being MnO5 square-based pyramidal sites. The chains of cooperatively twisted apex-linked MnO4 tetrahedra adopt an ordered -LRLR- arrangement within each tetrahedral layer. This is the first published example of a fully refined structure of this type which exhibits such intralayer ordering of the twisted tetrahedral chains. The rationale behind the contrasting structures of La0.33Sr0.67MnO2.42 and other previously reported reduced La1−xSrxMnO3−y phases is discussed.

Abstract: The limitations of the loading of the porous metalorganic framework [Zn4O(bdc)3] (bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate; MOF-5 or IRMOF-1) with Pd nanoparticles was investigated. First, the volatile organometallic precursor [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] was employed to get the inclusion compound [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)]x@MOF-5 via gas-phase infiltration at 10-3 mbar. A loading of four molecules of [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] per formula unit of MOF-5 (x = 4) can be reached (35 wt.% Pd). Second, the metalorganic precursor [Pd(acac)2] (acac = 2,4-pentanedionate) was used and the inclusion materials [Pd(acac)2]x@MOF-5 of different Pd loadings were obtained by incipient wetness infiltration. However, the maximum loading was lower as compared with the former case with about two precursor molecules per formula unit of MOF-5. Both loading routes are suitable for the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles inside the porous host matrix. Homogeneously distributed nanoparticles with diameter of 2.4(±0.2) nm can be achieved by photolysis of the inclusion compounds [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)]x@MOF-5 (x 4), while the hydrogenolysis of [Pd(acac)2]x@MOF-5 (x 2) leads to a mixture of small particles inside the network (< 3 nm) and large Pd agglomerates (40 nm) on the outer surface of the MOF-5 specimens. The pure Pdx@MOF-5 materials proved to be stable under hydrogen pressure (2 bar) at 150 °C over many hours. Neither hydrogenation of the bdc linkers nor particle growth was observed. The new composite materials were characterized by 1H/13C-MAS-NMR, powder XRD, ICP-AES, FT-IR, N2 sorption measurements and high resolution TEM. Raising the Pd loading of a representative sample Pd4@MOF-5 (35 wt.% Pd) by using [Pd(5-C5H5)(3-C3H5)] as precursor in a second cycle of gas-phase infiltration and photolysis was accompanied by the collapse of the long-range crystalline order of the MOF.

Abstract: The layered structure of Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)(2)O-41 (Z = 2) was determined by transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction refinement in space group P6(3)/mcm (No. 194), with a = 10.0966(3)angstrom and c = 26.3762(5)angstrom. This original 10L-type structure is built from two structural blocks, namely, [Sr15Bi6Cu2(CO3)O-29] and [Sr6Bi2(CO3)O-12]. The Bi5+ cations form [Bi2O10] dimers, whereas the Cu2+ and C atoms occupy infinite tunnels running along (c) over right arrow. The nature of the different blocks and layers is discussed with regard to the existing hexagonal layered compounds. Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)(2)O-41 is insulating and paramagnetic.

Abstract: The irradiation of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with nanosecond laser pulses induces shape transformations yielding nanocrystals with an inner cavity. The concentration of the stabilizing surfactant, the use of moderate pulse fluences, and the size of the irradiated AuNPs determine the efficiency of the process and the nature of the void. Hollow nanocrystals are obtained when molecules from the surrounding medium (e.g., water and organic matter derived from the surfactant) are trapped during laser pulse irradiation. These experimental observations suggest the existence of a subtle balance between the heating and cooling processes experienced by the nanocrystals, which induce their expansion and subsequent recrystallization keeping exogenous matter inside. The described approach provides valuable insight into the mechanism of interaction of pulsed nanosecond laser with AuNPs, along with interesting prospects for the development of hollow plasmonic nanoparticles with potential applications related to gas and liquid storage at the nanoscale.
