Abstract: Using an extension of the Gutzwiller approximation for an inhomogeneous system, we study the two-band Hubbard model with unequal band widths for a slab geometry. The aim is to investigate the mutual effect of individual bands on the spatial distribution of quasi-particle weight and charge density, especially near the surface of the slab. The main effect of the difference in band width is the presence of two different length scales corresponding to the quasi-particle profile of each band. This is enhanced in the vicinity of the critical interaction of the narrow band where an orbitally selective Mott transition occurs and a surface dead layer forms for the narrow band. For the doped case, two different regimes of charge transfer between the surface and the bulk of the slab are revealed. The charge transfer from surface/ center to center/ surface depends on both the doping level and the average relative charge accumulated in each band. Such effects could also be of importance when describing the accumulation of charges at the interface between structures made of multi-band strongly correlated materials.

Abstract: Using the mass-spectrometric method we studied the effect of light gas inclusions on the formation process of multi-component laser-induced plasma ions. Masscharge characteristics, as well as energy and spatial distribution of the plasma ions are analysed. We found that both the energy and maximal charge of heavy component ions decrease due to the presence of gas atoms in the solid target surface layer.

Abstract: Using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory we investigated the dependence of the magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings on their thickness. Abstract: Vertically aligned nitrogen-doped nanocrystalline diamond nanorods are fabricated from nitrogen-doped nanocrystalline diamond films using reactive ion etching in oxygen plasma. These nanorods show enhanced thermionic electron emission (TEE) characteristics, viz.. a high current density of 12.0 mA/cm(2) and a work function value of 4.5 eV with an applied voltage of 3 Vat 923 K. The enhanced TEE characteristics of these nanorods are ascribed to the induction of nanographitic phases at the grain boundaries and the field penetration effect through the local field enhancement from nanorods owing to a high aspect ratio and an excellent field enhancement factor.

Abstract: We explore the flatness of conduction and valence bands of interlayer excitons in MoS2/WSe2 van der Waals heterobilayers, tuned by interlayer twist angle, pressure, and external electric field. We employ an efficient continuum model where the moire pattern from lattice mismatch and/or twisting is represented by an equivalent mesoscopic periodic potential. We demonstrate that the mismatch moire potential is too weak to produce significant flattening. Moreover, we draw attention to the fact that the quasi-particle effective masses around the Gamma-point and the band flattening are reduced with twisting. As an alternative approach, we show (i) that reducing the interlayer distance by uniform vertical pressure can significantly increase the effective mass of the moire hole, and (ii) that the moire depth and its band flattening effects are strongly enhanced by accessible electric gating fields perpendicular to the heterobilayer, with resulting electron and hole effective masses increased by more than an order of magnitude – leading to record-flat bands. These findings impose boundaries on the commonly generalized benefits of moire twistronics, while also revealing alternative feasible routes to achieve truly flat electron and hole bands to carry us to strongly correlated excitonic phenomena on demand.

Abstract: We have discovered two novel types of planar defects that appear in heteroepitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-delta(YBCO123) thin films, grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) either with or without a La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) overlayer, using the combination of highangle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping for unambiguous identification. These planar lattice defects are based on the intergrowth of either a BaO plane between two CuO chains or multiple Y-O layers between two CuO2 planes, resulting in non-stoichiometric layer sequences that could directly impact the high-Tc superconductivity. Abstract: We have studied the transport properties of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 (LTO/STO) heterostructures. In spite of 2D growth observed in reflection high energy electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy images revealed that the samples tend to amorphize. Still, we observe that the structures are conducting, and some of them exhibit high conductance and/or superconductivity. We established that conductivity arises mainly on the STO side of the interface, and shows all the signs of the two-dimensional electron gas usually observed at interfaces between STO and LTO or LaAlO3, including the presence of two electron bands and tunability with a gate voltage. Analysis of magnetoresistance (MR) and superconductivity indicates the presence of spatial fluctuations of the electronic properties in our samples. That can explain the observed quasilinear out-of-plane MR, as well as various features of the in-plane MR and the observed superconductivity.

Abstract: We introduce a rapid method to test the photocatalytic activity of singlet‐oxygen‐producing photosensitizers using a batch cell, a LED laser and a conventional potentiostat. The strategy is based on coupling of photo‐oxidation of hydroquinone and simultaneous electrochemical reduction of its oxidized form at a carbon electrode in an organic solvent (methanol). This scheme gives an immediate response and avoids complications related to long‐term experiments such as oxidative photo‐degradation of photosensitizers and singlet oxygen traps by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among the tested compounds, a fluoro‐substituted subphthalocyanine showed the highest photocurrent and singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ) in comparison to phenoxy‐ and tert‐butyl‐substituted analogues, whereas the lowest photocurrents and yields were observed for aggregated and dimeric phthalocyanine complexes. The method is useful for fast screening of the photosensitizing activity and represents the first example of one‐pot coupling of electrochemical and photocatalytic reactions in organic media.

Abstract: We investigate the influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field on the lowest-energy states of an electron bound to a donor which is located near a semiconductor-metal interface. The problem is treated within the effective mass approach and the lowest-energy states are obtained through (1) the “numerically exact” finite element method, and (2) a variational approach using a trial wave function where all image charges that emerge due to the presence of the metallic gate are taken into account. The trial wave functions are constructed such that they reduce to an exponential behavior for sufficiently small magnetic fields and become Gaussian for intermediate and large magnetic fields. The average electron-donor distance can be controlled by the external magnetic field. We find that the size of the 2p(z) state depends strongly on the magnetic field when the donor is close to the interface, showing a nonmonotonic behavior, in contrast with the ground and the other excited states. Abstract: We perform the wavepacket dynamics simulation of a graphene-based device where propagating electron trajectories are tamed by an applied magnetic field toward a normal/superconductor interface. The magnetic field controls the incidence angle of the incoming electronic wavepacket at the interface, which results in the tunable electron-hole ratio in the reflected wave function due to the angular dependence of the Andreev reflection. Here, mapped control of the quasiparticle trajectories by the external magnetic field not only defines an experimental probe for fundamental studies of the Andreev reflection in graphene but also lays the foundation for further development of magnetic focusing devices based on nanoengineered superconducting two-dimensional materials.

Abstract: We present a detailed theoretical study of the optoelectronic properties of a Na3Bi based three-dimensional Dirac electronic system (3DDES). The optical conductivity is evaluated using the energy-balance equation derived from a Boltzmann equation, where the electron Hamiltonian is taken from a simplified k . p approach. We find that for short-wavelength irradiation, the optical absorption in Na3Bi is mainly due to inter-band electronic transitions. In contrast to the universal optical conductance observed for graphene, the optical conductivity for Na3Bi based 3DDES depends on the radiation frequency but not on temperature, carrier density, and electronic relaxation time. In the radiation wavelength regime of about 5 mu m, < lambda < 200 mu m, an optical absorption window is found. This is similar to what is observed in graphene. The position and width of the absorption window depend on the direction of the light polarization and sensitively on temperature, carrier density, and electronic relaxation time. Particularly, we demonstrate that the inter-band optical absorption channel can be switched on and off by applying the gate voltage. This implies that similar to graphene, Na3Bi based 3DDES can also be applied in infrared electro-optical modulators. Our theoretical findings are helpful in gaining an in-depth understanding of the basic optoelectronic properties of recently discovered 3DDESs.

Abstract: We present a general description of the formalism of symmetry-adapted rotator functions (SARFs) for molecules in cylindrical confinement. Molecules are considered as clusters of interaction centers (ICs), can have any symmetry, and can display different types of ICs. Cylindrical confinement can be realized by encapsulation in a carbon nanotube (CNT). The potential energy of a molecule surrounded by a CNT can be calculated by evaluating a limited number of terms of an expansion into SARFs, which offers a significant reduction of the computation time. Optimal molecular orientations can be deduced from the resulting potential energy landscape. Examples, including the case of a molecule with cubic symmetry inside a CNT, are discussed.

Abstract: We present an exact diagonalization study of negatively charged excitonic trions in two vertically coupled parabolic quantum dots. The electrons and the hole are confined to different dots. We obtain the energy spectra as a function of inter-dot separation and external magnetic field strength and identify different ground-state angular momentum transitions which are accompanied by abrupt charge redistributions in the dots. Abstract: We report a high-throughput first-principles characterization of the structural, mechanical, electronic, and vibrational properties of tetragonal single-layer transition metal Xenes (t-TMXs). Our calculations revealed 22 dynamically, mechanically and chemically stable structures among the 96 possible free-standing layers present in the t-TMX family. As a fingerprint for their structural identification, we identified four characteristic Raman active phonon modes, namely three in-plane and one out-of-plane optical branches, with various intensities and frequencies depending on the material in question. Spin-polarized electronic calculations demonstrated that anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) metals, ferromagnetic (FM) metals, AFM semiconductors, and non-magnetic semiconductor materials exist within this family, evidencing the potential of t-TMXs for further use in multifunctional heterostructures.

Abstract: We report the direct measurement of the topological skyrmion energy barrier through a hysteresis of the skyrmion lattice in the chiral magnet MnSi. Measurements were made using small-angle neutron scattering with a custom-built resistive coil to allow for high-precision minor hysteresis loops. The experimental data were analyzed using an adapted Preisach model to quantify the energy barrier for skyrmion formation and corroborated by the minimum-energy path analysis based on atomistic spin simulations. We reveal that the skyrmion lattice in MnSi forms from the conical phase progressively in small domains, each of which consisting of hundreds of skyrmions, and with an activation barrier of several eV.
