Abstract: The conventional approach to object reconstruction through electron tomography is to reduce the three-dimensional problem to a series of independent two-dimensional slice-by-slice reconstructions. However, at atomic resolution the image of a single atom extends over many such slices and incorporating this image as prior knowledge in tomography or depth sectioning therefore requires a fully three-dimensional treatment. Unfortunately, the size of the three-dimensional projection operator scales highly unfavorably with object size and readily exceeds the available computer memory. In this paper, it is shown that for incoherent image formation the memory requirement can be reduced to the fundamental lower limit of the object size, both for tomography and depth sectioning. Furthermore, it is shown through multislice calculations that high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy can be sufficiently incoherent for the reconstruction of single element nanocrystals, but that dynamical diffraction effects can cause classification problems if more than one element is present. Abstract: The crystal structure of BiSr8-xCa3+xO22 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This phase is the same as Bi9Sr11Ca5Oy that was previously studied by several authors as a secondary phase in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system and coexists in thermodynamic equilibrium with the superconductors Bi2Sr2CuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with cell parameters a 11.037(3) Angstrom, b = 5.971(2) Angstrom, c = 19.703(7) Angstrom, beta = 101.46(3)degrees Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and full-matrix least-squares refinement. It is built up by perovskite-related blocks of composition [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] that intergrow with double rows [Bi4O6] running along b. The perovskite blocks are formed by groups of five octahedra that are shifted from each other 3/2 root 2a(p) along [110](p) (a(p) being the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) in a zigzag configuration and are aligned with this direction parallel to the one forming an angle of 25" with the c axis. In turn, the perovskite blocks [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] are shifted from each other 1/2 of both a(p) and root 2a(p) along [100](p) and [110](p), respectively. In the double rows, two trivalent bismuth atoms are placed, forming dimeric anion complexes [Bi2O6].(6-).6- The oxygen atoms around bismuth in these dimers are placed in the vertexes of a distorted trigonal bipyramid, with one vacant position that would be occupied by the lone pairs characteristic for the electronic configuration of Bi(III). The B sites in the perovskite blocks are occupied by pentavalent bismuth atoms and calcium atoms; the remaining Sr and Ca ions occupy the A sites of the perovskite blocks with coordination numbers with oxygen ranging from 10 to 12. The mean valence for Bi is +3.67 [33.3% of Bi(V) and 66.7% of Bi(III)]. The oxygen vacancies are located in the boundaries between domains having the two possible configurations of the perovskite subcell as in the anionic superconductor Bi3BaO5.5. The oxidation of Bi6Sr8-xCa3+xO22 at 650 degrees C allows the complete filling of the oxygen vacancies to form the double perovskite (Sr2-xCax)Bi1.4Ca0.6O6 that shows 92.5% of bismuth in +5 oxidation state. The experimental high-resolution electon microscopy image and the electron diffraction pattern of powder samples along the [010]* zone axis are in good agreement with those calculated from the structural model obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The material is almost free of defects and the occurrence of planar defects is very exceptional.

Abstract: The effect of a parallel magnetic field on the orbital motion of electrons in high-quality superconducting nanowires resulting in a superconductor-to-normal transition which occurs through a cascade of jumps in the order parameter as a function of the magnetic field. Such cascades originate from the transverse size quantization that splits the conduction band into a series of subbands. Here, based on a numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a hollow nanocylinder, we investigate how the quantum-size cascades depend on the confining geometry, i.e., by changing the cylinder radius R and its thickness d we cover the range from the nanowire-like to the nanofilm-like regime. The cascades are shown to become much less pronounced when increasing R/d, i.e., when the nanofilm-like regime is approached. When the temperature is non-zero they are thermally smoothed. This includes the spin-magnetic-field interaction which reduces the critical (depairing) parallel magnetic field H-c,H-parallel to but does not have any qualitative effect on the quantum cascades. From our calculations it is seen that the paramagnetic limiting field H-par significantly exceeds H-c,H-parallel to even in extremely narrow nanocylinders, i.e., when R, d are down to a few nanometers, and H-c,H-parallel to is only about 10% larger when switching-off the spin-magnetic-field interaction in this case. Both characteristic fields, H-c,H-parallel to and H-par, exhibit pronounced quantum-size oscillations. We demonstrate that the quantum cascades and the quantum-size oscillations survive in the presence of surface roughness.

Abstract: The Green function approach to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity is used to study nanofilms. We go beyond previous models and include effects of confinement on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling as well as on the electronic spectrum and on the phonon modes. Within our approach, we find that in ultrathin films, confinement effects on the electronic screening become very important. Indeed, contrary to what has been advanced in recent years, the sudden increases of the density of states when new bands start to be occupied as the film thickness increases, tend to suppress the critical temperature rather than to enhance it. On the other hand, the increase of the number of phonon modes with increasing number of monolayers in the film leads to an increase in the critical temperature. As a consequence, the superconducting critical parameters in such nanofilms are determined by these two competing effects. Furthermore, in sufficiently thin films, the condensate consists of well-defined subcondensates associated with the occupied bands, each with a distinct coherence length. The subcondensates can interfere constructively or destructively giving rise to an interference pattern in the Cooper pair probability density.

Abstract: The incorporation of nanoscaled pinning centers in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO) films is one of the core topics to enhance the critical current density Jc(B, Q) of coated conductors. The mixed double-perovskite Ba2Y(Nb/Ta)O6 (BYNTO) can be grown in nanosized columns parallel the YBCO c-axis and in step-like patterns, making it customizable to meet specific working conditions (T, B, Q). We compare a 1.6 μm thick film of pure YBCO and a similar film with additional 5 mol% of BYNTO, grown by pulsed laser deposition with a growth rate of 1.6 nm/s on buffered biaxially textured Ni-5at.% W tape. Our doped sample shows nanosized BYNTO columns parallel cYBCO and plates in the ab-plane containing Y, Nb and Ta. An improved homogeneity of the critical current density Jc over the sample was evaluated from trapped field profiles measured with a scanning Hall probe microscope. The mean Jc in rolling direction of the tape is 1.8 MA/cm² (77 K, self-field) and doubles the value of the undoped sample. Angular dependent measurements of the critical current density, Jc(Q), show a decreased anisotropy of the doped film for various magnetic fields at 77 K as well as 64 K.

Abstract: The intensity distributions of the coherent and partially coherent x-rays passed through a poly-capillary lens have been computed at the focal plane. The computations showed that at the appropriate experimental conditions the interference phenomenon does affect the intensity distribution. In the case of the coherent input radiation with the photon energy of 0.1 keV, the interference fringes were observed, while the non-coherent x-ray radiation produced no interference-like intensity distributions.

Abstract: The local and long range structure of polycrystalline samples of Bi0.75Sr0.25FeO3-delta has been probed by neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction coupled with transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the long range structure on average can be described by the cubic space group Pm-3m (a(p) congruent to 3.951 angstrom). However, the refinements revealed large atomic displacements for the (Bi, Sr) cations and the oxygen atoms from their ideal positions. The electron microscopy study indicates the existence of local phenomena like local ordering of oxygen vacancies, which are segregated at the randomly spaced parallel (FeO2-delta) planes, or the existence of region of different symmetry, probably R3c. At room temperature, the compound exhibits G-type antiferromagnetism (T-N congruent to 650 K) with a magnetic moment of congruent to 3.7 mu(B). (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The nuclear and magnetic structure of a novel oxychloride Pb4BiFe4O11Cl has been studied over the temperature range 1.5700 K using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction [space group P4/mbm, a = 5.5311(1) Å, c = 19.586(1) Å, T = 300 K]. Pb4BiFe4O11Cl is built of truncated (Pb,Bi)3Fe4O11 quadruple perovskite blocks separated by CsCl-type (Pb,Bi)2Cl slabs. The perovskite blocks consist of two layers of FeO6 octahedra located between two layers of FeO5 tetragonal pyramids. The FeO6 octahedra rotate about the c axis, resulting in a √2ap × √2ap × c superstructure. Below TN = 595(17) K, Pb4BiFe4O11Cl adopts a G-type antiferromagnetic structure with the iron magnetic moments confined to the ab plane. The ordered magnetic moments at 1.5 K are 3.93(3) and 3.62(4) μB on the octahedral and square-pyramidal iron sites, respectively. Pb4BiFe4O11Cl can be considered a member of the perovskite-based An+1BnO3n1Cl homologous series (A = Pb/Bi; B = Fe) with n = 4. The formation of a subsequent member of the series with n = 5 is also demonstrated.

Abstract: The potential-controlled electrochemical aldol condensation of acetone to diacetone alcohol in a standard batch electrolysis set-up was studied in this work. It is confirmed that the reaction proceeds at the cathode and that, contrary to what is mentioned in earlier literature, water in the electrolyte has a disadvantageous effect on the reaction. Similar to the chemical reaction, the electrochemical reaction reaches a maximum yield when the equilibrium is reached. Separating the anode and cathode prevents cross-over and degradation of products, leading to a higher yield. Starting with pure acetone and support electrolyte, it was possible to obtain a diacetone alcohol concentration of 15 m% after two hours electrolysis in a divided set-up with a platinum electrode at -2.5 V. The concentration gradient throughout the electrolysis follows an exponential curve up to its equilibrium concentration.

Abstract: The revival of the Na-ion battery concept has prompted an intense search for new high capacity Na-based positive electrodes. Recently, emphasis has been placed on manipulating Na-based layered compounds to trigger the participation of the anionic network. We further explored this direction and show the feasibility of achieving anionic-redox activity in three-dimensional Na-based compounds. A new 3D β-Na1.7IrO3 phase was synthesized in a two-step process, which involves first the electrochemical removal of Li from β-Li2IrO3 to produce β-IrO3, which is subsequently reduced by electrochemical Na insertion. We show that β-Na1.7IrO3 can reversibly uptake nearly 1.3 Na+ per formula unit through an uneven voltage profile characterized by the presence of four plateaus related to structural transitions. Surprisingly, the β-Na1.7IrO3 phase was found to be stable up to 600 °C, while it could not be directly synthesized via conventional synthetic methods. Although these Na-based iridate phases are of limited practical interest, they help to understand how introducing highly polarizable guest ions (Na+) into host rocksalt-derived oxide structures affects the anionic redox mechanism.

Abstract: The structural complexity of the antiferromagnetic oxide selenide CaFeSeO is described. The compound contains puckered FeSeO layers composed of FeSe2O2 tetrahedra sharing all their vertexes. Two polymorphs coexist that can be derived from an archetype BaZnSO structure by cooperative tilting of the FeSe2O2 tetrahedra. The polymorphs differ in the relative arrangement of the puckered layers of vertex-linked FeSe2O2 tetrahedra. In a noncentrosymmetric Cmc21 polymorph (a = 3.89684(2) A, b = 13.22054(8) A, c = 5.93625(2) A) the layers are related by the C-centering translation, while in a centrosymmetric Pmcn polymorph, with a similar cell metric (a = 3.89557(6) A, b = 13.2237(6) A, c = 5.9363(3) A), the layers are related by inversion. The compound shows long-range antiferromagnetic order below a Neel temperature of 159(1) K with both polymorphs showing antiferromagnetic coupling via Fe-O-Fe linkages and ferromagnetic coupling via Fe-Se-Fe linkages within the FeSeO layers. The magnetic susceptibility also shows evidence for weak ferromagnetism which is modeled in the refinements of the magnetic structure as arising from an uncompensated spin canting in the noncentrosymmetric polymorph. There is also a spin glass component to the magnetism which likely arises from the disordered regions of the structure evident in the transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract: The synthesis of gold nanorods requires the presence of symmetry-breaking and shape-directing additives, among which bromide ions and quaternary ammonium surfactants have been reported as essential. As a result, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) has been selected as the most efficient surfactant to direct anisotropic growth. One of the difficulties arising from this selection is the low solubility of CTAB in water at room temperature, and therefore the seeded growth of gold nanorods is usually performed at 25 degrees C or above, which has restricted so far the analysis of kinetic effects derived from lower temperatures. We report a systematic study of the synthesis of gold nanorods from pentatwinned seeds using hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as the principal surfactant and a low concentration of bromide as shape-directing agent. Under these conditions, the synthesis can be performed at temperatures as low as 8 degrees C, and the corresponding kinetic effects can be studied, resulting in temperature-controlled aspect ratio tunability.

Abstract: The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism for (d + s)-wave superconductors and their representation using auxiliary fields is investigated. By using the link variable method, we then develop suitable discretization of these equations. Numerical simulations are carried out for a mesoscopic superconductor in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field which revealed peculiar vortex states. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: The trap-assisted tunneling (TAT) current in tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs) is one of the crucial factors degrading the sub-60 mV/dec sub-threshold swing. To correctly predict the TAT currents, an accurate description of the trap is required. Since electric fields in TFETs typically reach beyond 10(6) V/cm, there is a need to quantify the impact of such high field on the traps. We use a quantum mechanical implementation based on the modified transfer matrix method to obtain the trap energy level. We present the qualitative impact of electric field on different trap configurations, locations, and host materials, including both semiconductors and oxides. We determine that there is an electric-field related trap level shift and level broadening. We find that these electric-field induced quantum effects can enhance the trap emission rates. Abstract: The vibrational level populations of the electronic ground state of the nitrogen molecule have been calculated for typical glow discharge conditions in argonnitrogen mixtures with nitrogen concentrations between 0.1 and 1%. Stationary solutions of the master equations of the vibrational levels have been obtained using numerical methods. The main mechanisms responsible for the population and depopulation of the vibrational levels, and for the overall shape of the vibrational distribution function are pointed out. It has been found that vibrationvibration collisions play only a minor role and therefore the population of the vibrational levels is basically determined by the electron temperature.
