Abstract: Time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-S-SIMS) was used to characterize thin layers of oxy- and thiocarbocyanine dyes on Ag and Si. Apart from adduct ions a variety of structural fragment ions were detected for which a fragmentation pattern is proposed. Peak assignments were confirmed by comparing spectra of dyes with very similar structures. All secondary ions were assigned with a mass accuracy better than 50 ppm. The intensity of molecular ions as well as fragment ions has been studied as a function of the type of organic dye, the substrate, the layer thickness and the type of primary ion. A large yield difference of two orders of magnitude was observed between the precursor ions of cationic carbocyanine dyes and the protonated molecules of the anionic dyes. Fragment ions, on the other hand, yielded similar intensities for both types of dye. As the dye layers deposited on an Ag substrate yielded higher secondary ion intensities than those deposited on a Si substrate, the Ag metal clearly acts as a promoting agent for secondary ion formation. The effect was more pronounced for precursor signals than for fragment ions. The promoting effect decreased as the deposited layer thickness of the organic dye layer was increased. Abstract: The technique of imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and dual beam depth,profiling has been used to study the composition of the surface of tabular silver halide microcrystals. Analysis of individual microcrystals with a size well below 1 mum from a given emulsion is possible. The method is successfully applied for the characterization of silver halide microcrystals with subpercent global iodide concentrations confined in surface layers with a thickness below 5 nm. The developed TOF-SIMS analytical procedure is explicitly demonstrated for the molecular imaging of adsorbed thiocyanate layers (SCN) at crystal surfaces of individual crystals and for the differentiation of iodide conversion layers synthesized with KI and with AgI micrates (nanocrystals with a size between 10 and 50 nm). It can be concluded that TOF-SIMS as a microanalytical, surface-sensitive technique has some unique properties over other analytical techniques for the study of complex structured surface layers of silver halide microcrystals. This offers valuable information to support the synthesis of future photographic emulsions.

Abstract: The quartic force fields of FNO and CINO have been computed at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level. Using an ''augmented'' basis set dramatically improves results for FNO but has no significant effect for CINO. The best computed force field for FNO yields harmonic frequencies and fundamentals in excellent agreement with experiment. Overall, the force fields proposed in the present work are probably the most reliable ones ever published for these molecules. Total atomization energies have been computed using basis sets of spdfg quality: our best estimates are Sigma D-0 = 208.5 +/- 1 and 185.4 +/- 1 kcal/mol for FN0 and CINO, respectively. The computed value for FNO suggests a problem with the established experimental heat of formation. Thermodynamic tables in JANAF style at 100-2000 K are presented for both FNO and CINO.

Abstract: The purpose of this Brief Report is to point out the mistake in a formula for anisotropic electron scattering, previously published in Phys. Rev. A 41, 1112 (1990), which is widely used in Monte Carlo models of gas discharges. Anisotropic electron scattering is investigated based on the screened Coulomb potential between electrons and neutral atoms. The approach is also applied for electron scattering by nonpolar neutral molecules. Differential cross sections for electron scattering by Ar, N2, and CH4 are constructed on the basis of momentum and integrated cross sections. The formula derived in this paper is useful for Monte Carlo simulations of gas discharges.

Abstract: The equilibrium bond length, harmonic frequency, first and second order anharmonicity constants, rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, as well as the rotation-vibrational and centrifugal coupling constants for the ground X(2) Sigma(+) and first excited A(2) Pi states of the SiN radical have been calculated at the complete active space SCF (CASSCF), multireference CI (MRCI) and coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) levels using Dunning's correlation-consistent basis sets. The excitation energy of the A(2) Pi State has also been computed at these theoretical levels. Dipole moments of SiN in the X(2) Sigma(+) and A(2) Pi states are given. Our study shows that core correlation must be considered in order to obtain satisfactory accuracy for the spectroscopic constants.

Abstract: The determination of silicon via the 28Si(n,p)28 Al reaction by means of 14-MeV neutrons is applied to the analysis of pollution and natural aerosols. A Whatman 41 filter (40 cm2) on which airborne particulate material has been collected is compressed into a 3 × 12.7 mm pellet. Standards are prepared in the same way from clean filters spiked with a silicate solution. After a 50-s irradiation and a 75-s decay time, the sample is counted for 2 min with 5 × 5 NaI(Tl) well detector. The 1.779-MeV photopeak of 28Al is measured with a single channel sealer chain or with a multichannel analyser. The reproducibility, sensitivity and liability to interference from other elements were investigated for both counting systems. The homogeneity of the pellets and the filters was checked. The overall precision of one single-channel determination was estimated to be 3.5% after a 24-h high-volume sampling time. Samples collected in urban, industrial and remote areas with concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 15 μg Si m-3 air were analysed and the results are discussed.

Abstract: Submicron colloidal Ag particles and nano-sized filaments forming a statistical percolation network during ''in situ'' development of double structure tabular microcrystals of AgRr(I) emulsions have been studied by electron energy-loss spectroscopy and zero-loss electron spectroscopic imaging (EELS/ZLESI). Image analysis has shown that random quasi-fractal clusters were formed in the colloid. ZLESI has been applied to characterise the morphology and defect structure of aggregated particles and filaments. Their energy-loss spectra revealed plasmon excitations and interband 4d electron transitions between 4-32 eV energy-loss. To study the cluster structure and its relation to the physical properties, fractal analysis including estimations of cluster fractal dimensions and of density autocorrelation functions has been performed. Mechanisms of fractal aggregation based on known models of diffusion limited aggregation, cluster-cluster aggregation and percolation are discussed.

Abstract: Sensitive multi‐element analytical techniques were applied to determine 24 dissolved trace components in 25 different water samples from a 10 km2 zone in Brittany, France. Correspondence factor and multiple regression analyses showed that the elements considered are influenced mainly by the presence of: Fe‐Mn oxide accumulations, a local poly‐metallic sulfide mineralization, and non‐mineralized host rocks, agricultural activity and abundant organic material in local swamps. Via these numerical techniques the location of the poly‐metallic ore body can be derived from the data set.

Abstract: Sensitive multi-element analysis techniques together with major-element and isotopic analyses were applied to spring, mine and surface waters in the vicinity of an important known zinclead deposit in a carbonate environment, in the Les Malines area (Gard, France). Both the dissolved and suspended phases were investigated, and concretions and sediments were also considered in some cases. This methodological test shows that the ore body leaves various clear fingerprints, such as the Zn, As, Sb, Pb and U levels in the dissolved phase, the sulfate increment and the δ 34S. Some of the elements in solution are controlled by slightly soluble compounds, e.g. Zn by smithsonite and hydrozincite, Ba by barite, and Pb by hydrocerussite. Mapping the saturation indices for these elements appears useful for displaying the hydrogeochemical anomaly.

Abstract: Not much about the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur ripening is known, although it is used for many applications in photographic practice. Via a combination of tracer analysis and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur and sulphur-plus-gold ripening could be unveiled. When thiocyanate is added prior to the sulphur addition, it appears to rearrange the silver halide surface in such way that the sulphur deposition rate is enhanced, but the supply of interstitials is limited. Addition of thiocyanate after the sulphur reaction results in the formation of thiocyanate complexes with silver, from which a silver ion is more easily deposited in a surface cell of the silver sulphide clusters thus enhancing the sensitization rate. For sulphur-plus-gold sensitized emulsions it was observed that part of the gold ions could be removed out of the Ag2-xAuxS clusters by addition of thiocyanate ions and subsequent washing. Hence, it was concluded that two different types of gold ions are present in the silver sulphide clusters; 1. gold ions which are substitutional for silver (bound between sulphur and bromide ions) 2. gold ions which bridge two or three sulphur atoms. Incorporation of gold ions into silver sulphide clusters suppresses their optical absorption in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Since the optical absorption at 505 nm can completely be restored by addition of thiocyanate, it is assumed that the entity absorbing at this wavelength is a monomer of silver sulphide.

Abstract: Laser microprobe mass spectrometry (LMMS) aims at the identification of local organic and inorganic constituents at the surface of solids, The low mass resolution capabilities of the initially used time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometers have often proved to be insufficient for identification, Therefore, high mass resolution Fourier transform (ET) LMMS was developed, Neo-ceramic powders with oxide or carbide coatings were analyzed by both FT LMMS and TOF LMMS, The data are useful to compare the analytical information gained from both methods, Analytical results of these samples by electron microprobe x-ray analysis (EPXMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) are discussed to assess the place of FT LMMS and TOF LMMS in the spectrum of microanalytical techniques.

Abstract: Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km. Abstract: Fourteen derivatives of trans,trans-1,4-bis[2-phenylethenyl]benzene were synthesized by Wittig reactions as model compounds of poly(paraphenylene vinylene). Structure, configurational homogeneity and absence of ionic impurities were controlled by mass spectrometry, infrared and neutron activation analysis, respectively. Crystallographic unit cell parameters were obtained from X-ray powder patterns and measurements of electrical conductivities were performed on undoped samples. The data of four more compounds containing one or more thiophene rings instead of phenyl rings were added from the 3iterature. If NO2 and Cl groups are excluded from the electron count a good linear correlation is found between the logarithm of the conductivity and the non-σ electron density (View the MathML source). The position of the substituents, on the central or on the terminal ring, also plays a role in as much as it affects the molecular volume of the compound but not the non-σ electron density. The correlation between the logarithm of the conductivity and the absorption coefficient of the longest wavelength of UV absorption identifies the π electrons in the chromophore as the principal charge carriers.

Abstract: Five geothermal waters from the Mons area (southern Belgium) have been studied: one natural hot spring at Stambruges, one stagnant warm water from the inclined tunnels at Baudour, and three thermal waters from the drillholes at St. Ghislain, Ghlin and Douvrain, originating from the carbonate/anhydrite-bearing Visean strata, at depths of ca. 2600, 1550 and 1300 m, respectively. Multielement chemical analysis of the filtered water and its suspended matter > 0.4 μm) was carried out by instrumental neutron activation. Temperature in depth, calculated using the silica (chalcedony) chemical geothermometer, ranged from 75 to 88°C, in good agreement with experimentally determined values. Na/K and Na/K/Ca geothermometers yieilded erratic results, as expected from the geological environment in the aquifer. From the analytical data it can be calculated that the thermal waters of St. Ghislain, Ghlin and Douvrain are not only saturated with respect to chalcedony, but also to anhydrite, calcite, fluorite, barite, strontianite, and possibly zinc silicate, iron (III) hydroxide or siderite, albite, microcline, gibbsite and kaolinite. They are oversaturated with respect to muscovite. Data are also presented for the other thermal waters, and a cold spring water (Claire Fontaine, Stambruges). The similar trace-element composition of the thermal waters can be explained by percolation of the water in the same distant recharge zone, from where it descends, becomes heated at depth and rises along collapse breccia, and locally (Baudour, Stambruges) along fissures. The uptake of higher amounts of Ca, Mg, Sr and sulfate in St. Ghislain and Ghlin, as compared to Douvrain and Baudour is correlated with the boundary between the non-dissolved and dissolved evaporitic zones. This boundary is situated between St. Ghislain and Douvrain, and is roughly parallel with the direction of the groundwater flow (WNW).

Abstract: Based on the existing experimental data and their statistical errors, it is not possible to make a sound recommendation of the cross-section set of Campbell et al (J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 34 (2001) 1185). We comment on this paper.
