“Graphane”. Sahin H, Leenaerts O, Singh SK, Peeters FM, Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Computational Molecular Science 5, 255 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/wcms.1216
Abstract: Atomically thin crystals have recently been the focus of attention, in particular, after the synthesis of graphene, a monolayer hexagonal crystal structure of carbon. In this novel material class, the chemically derived graphenes have attracted tremendous interest. It was shown that, although bulk graphite is a chemically inert material, the surface of single layer graphene is rather reactive against individual atoms. So far, synthesis of several graphene derivatives have been reported such as hydrogenated graphene graphane' (CH), fluorographene (CF), and chlorographene (CCl). Moreover, the stability of bromine and iodine covered graphene were predicted using computational tools. Among these derivatives, easy synthesis, insulating electronic behavior and reversibly tunable crystal structure of graphane make this material special for future ultra-thin device applications. This overview surveys structural, electronic, magnetic, vibrational, and mechanical properties of graphane. We also present a detailed overview of research efforts devoted to the computational modeling of graphane and its derivatives. Furthermore recent progress in synthesis techniques and possible applications of graphane are reviewed as well. “Computing optical properties of ultra-thin crystals”. Sahin H, Torun E, Bacaksiz C, Horzum S, Kang J, Senger RT, Peeters FM, Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Computational Molecular Science 6, 351 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1002/wcms.1252
Abstract: An overview is given of recent advances in experimental and theoretical understanding of optical properties of ultra-thin crystal structures (graphene, phosphorene, silicene, MoS2 , MoSe2, WS2, WSe2, h-AlN, h-BN, fluorographene, and graphane). Ultra-thin crystals are atomically thick-layered crystals that have unique properties which differ from their 3D counterpart. Because of the difficulties in the synthesis of few-atom-thick crystal structures, which are thought to be the main building blocks of future nanotechnology, reliable theoretical predictions of their electronic, vibrational, and optical properties are of great importance. Recent studies revealed the reliable predictive power of existing theoretical approaches based on density functional theory. “An efficient way of including thermal diffuse scattering in simulation of scanning transmission electron microscopic images”. Croitoru MD, van Dyck D, Van Aert S, Bals S, Verbeeck J, Ultramicroscopy 106, 933 (2006). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.ultramic.2006.04.006
Abstract: We propose an improved image simulation procedure for atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on the multislice formulation, which takes thermal diffuse scattering fully into account. The improvement with regard to the classical frozen phonon approach is realized by separating the lattice configuration statistics from the dynamical scattering so as to avoid repetitive calculations. As an example, the influence of phonon scattering on the image contrast is calculated and investigated. STEM image simulation of crystals can be applied with reasonable computing times to problems involving a large number of atoms and thick or large supercells.

Abstract: A non-destructive method for measuring the thickness of thin amorphous films composed of light elements has been developed. The method employs the statistics of the phase of the electron exit wave function. The accuracy of this method has been checked numerically by the multislice method and compared with that based on the mean inner potential.

“Exploring possibilities of band gap measurement with off-axis EELS in TEM”. Korneychuk S, Partoens B, Guzzinati G, Ramaneti R, Derluyn J, Haenen K, Verbeeck J, Ultramicroscopy 189, 76 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.ULTRAMIC.2018.03.021
Abstract: A technique to measure the band gap of dielectric materials with high refractive index by means of energy electron loss spectroscopy (EELS) is presented. The technique relies on the use of a circular (Bessel) aperture and suppresses Cherenkov losses and surface-guided light modes by enforcing a momentum transfer selection. The technique also strongly suppresses the elastic zero loss peak, making the acquisition, interpretation and signal to noise ratio of low loss spectra considerably better, especially for excitations in the first few eV of the EELS spectrum. Simulations of the low loss inelastic electron scattering probabilities demonstrate the beneficial influence of the Bessel aperture in this setup even for high accelerating voltages. The importance of selecting the optimal experimental convergence and collection angles is highlighted. The effect of the created off-axis acquisition conditions on the selection of the transitions from valence to conduction bands is discussed in detail on a simplified isotropic two band model. This opens the opportunity for deliberately selecting certain transitions by carefully tuning the microscope parameters. The suggested approach is experimentally demonstrated and provides good signal to noise ratio and interpretable band gap signals on reference samples of diamond, GaN and AlN while offering spatial resolution in the nm range. “RSV frequency in children below 2 years hospitalized for lower respiratory tract infections”. Hacimustafaoglu M, Celebi S, Bozdemir SE, Ozgur T, Ozcan I, Guray A, Çakir D, Turkish Journal Of Pediatrics 55, 130 (2013)
Abstract: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent agent of acute lower respiratory diseases and creates a significant burden of disease in children under 5 years all over the world. RSV causes severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) that require hospitalization, especially in children <= 2 years. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of RSV in children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for LRTI. Children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for one year for LRTI in the three largest hospitals of Bursa City Center, Turkey were evaluated. These three hospitals comprise 67.5% of all child beds in central Bursa, so this study allows us to evaluate the total disease burden and hospitalization incidence in central Bursa. Nasal swabs of the children were evaluated with RSV RespiStrip (Coris Bioconcept Organization). A total of 671 children were hospitalized for LRTI, and 254 (37.9%) had at least one hospitalization that was positive for RSV. Of all patients with LRTI, 54.8% (368/671) were hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis, while 45.2% (303/671) were hospitalized for pneumonia. Of patients with acute bronchiolitis or pneumonia, 41% (151/368) and 34% (103/303) were RSV+, respectively. Of RSV+ hospitalized children, 59.5% (151/254) were diagnosed as acute bronchiolitis and 40.5% (103/254) as pneumonia. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were 20.5/1000, 11.2/1000 and 9.3/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to RSV+ LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were found as 7.8/1000, 4.6/1000 and 3.2/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. More than one-third of all children hospitalized with LRTI (38.3%, n=257) were in the 0-3 months age group. Compared to other age groups, RSV positivity was highest in that age group for acute bronchiolitis (57%), pneumonia (39.5%) and also total children with LRTI (47.9%). RSV is a very important cause of lower respiratory infections in children <= 2 years of age and occurred most frequently in those 0-3 months of age in our study. Since there is no other study assessing the annual hospitalization incidence of RSV+ LRTIs in one city in Turkey, our study has unique importance for providing valuable statistical data about RSV+ LRTIs.

Abstract: We report on the electrical, optical and physical properties of Cu2ZnSnSe4 solar cells using an absorber layer fabricated by selenization of sputtered Cu, Zn and Cu10Sn90 multilayers. A maximum active-area conversion efficiency of 10.4% under AM1.5G was measured with a maximum short circuit current density of 39.7 mA/cm(2), an open circuit voltage of 394 mV and a fill factor of 66.4%. We perform electrical and optical characterization using photoluminescence spectroscopy, external quantum efficiency, current-voltage and admittance versus temperature measurements in order to derive information about possible causes for the low open circuit voltage values observed. The main defects derived from these measurements are strong potential fluctuations in the absorber layer as well as a potential barrier of the order of 133 meV at the back side contact. Abstract: A far-infrared absorption study of electrons in lightly-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices is presented. Both weakly and strongly coupled superlattices are investigated, and the difference between intersubband transitions and transitions between extended minibands is demonstrated. At low temperatures, the absorption spectra are dominated by donor transitions. The 1s-2p(z) transition, which is intimately related to the intersubband transition, is observed. All experimental data are compared to an envelope function calculation for the miniband structure and a variational calculation for the donor energies. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is achieved.

Abstract: We have studied tunnelling through Si donors incorporated in the quantum well of double barrier resonant tunnelling devices. In addition to a resonance associated with the ground state of a single donor (1s level), a novel donor-related resonance at a smaller binding energy is observed in high magnetic fields where it becomes dominant over the Is resonance. We attribute this novel feature to a D-minus state of a shallow donor.

Abstract: Structural, electronic, optic and vibrational properties of Zinc antimonide (ZnSb) monolayers and their func-tionalized (semi-fluorinated and fully chlorinated) structures are investigated by means of the first-principles calculations. The phonon dispersion curves reveal the presence of imaginary frequencies and thus confirm the dynamical instability of ZnSb monolayer. The calculated electronic band structure corroborates the metallic character with fully-relativistic calculations. Moreover, we analyze the surface functionalization effect on the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of the pristine ZnSb monolayer. The semi-fluorinated and fully-chlorinated ZnSb monolayers are shown to be dynamically stable in contrast to the ZnSb monolayer. At the same time, semi-fluorination and fully-chlorination of ZnSb monolayer could effectively modulate the metallic elec-tronic properties of pristine ZnSb. In addition, a magnetic metal to a nonmagnetic semiconductor transition with a band gap of 1 eV is achieved via fluorination, whereas a transition to a semiconducting state with 1.4 eV band gap is found via chlorination of the ZnSb monolayer. According to the optical properties analysis, the first ab-sorption peaks of the fluorinated-and chlorinated-ZnSb monolayers along the in-plane polarization are placed in the infrared range of spectrum, while they are in the middle ultraviolet for the out-of-plane polarization. Interestingly, the optically anisotropic behavior of these novel monolayers along the in-plane polarizations is highly desirable for design of polarization-sensitive photodetectors. The results of the calculations clearly proved that the tunable electronic properties of the ZnSb monolayer can be realized by chemical functionalization for application in the next generation nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract: The spectral properties of a classical two-dimensional (2D) cluster of charged particles which are confined by a quadratic potential are calculated. Using the method of Newton optimization we obtain the ground state and the metastable states. For a given configuration the eigenvectors and eigenfrequencies for the normal modes are obtained using the Householder diagonalization technique for the dynamical matrix whose elements are the second derivative of the potential energy. For small clusters the lowest excitation corresponds to an intershell rotation. Magic numbers are associated to clusters which are most stable against intershell rotation. For large clusters the lowest excitation is a vortex/anti-vortex pair.

Abstract: The electronic structure of the conduction and valence bands of a quantum ring containing a layer inside the ring opening is modeled This structure (nanocup) consists of a GaAs nanodisk (the cup s bottom) and a GaAs nanoring (the cup s rim) which encircles the disk The whole system is embedded in an (Al Ga)As matrix and its shape resembles realistic ring structures grown by the droplet epitaxy technique The conduction-band states in the structure are modeled by the single-band effective-mass theory while the 4-band Luttinger-Kohn model is adopted to compute the valence-band states We analyze how the electronic structure of the nanocup evolves from the one of a quantum ring when the size of either the nanodisk or the nanoring is changed For that purpose (1) the width of the ring (2) the disk radius and (3) the disk height are separately varied For dimensions typical for experimentally realized structures we find that the electron wavefunctions are mainly localized inside the ring even when the thickness of the Inner layer is 90% of the ring thickness These calculations indicate that topological phenomena like the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect are negligibly affected by the presence of the layer inside the ring (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

Abstract: We investigate the effects of the finite confining potential V0 on the absorption and emission scattering rates of electrons interacting with LO phonons for a cylindrical GaAs quantum wire. The emission rates are qualitatively similar to those of the 2D case. The absorption rates on the other hand exhibit two different regimes: 1) for a wire radius smaller than a certain value (80 Å in the case where V0 = 190 meV) the behavior is similar to the 2D and 3D analogues, but 2) for larger radius the absorption rates initially increase with increasing energy, reach a maximum value and then decrease monotonicaly. A complete study is made as a function of wire radius, and electron energy.

Abstract: We report on magnetisation of individual superconducting particles with size down to 0.1 micron. The non-invasive access to properties of such small objects has become possible using submicron Hall probes which detect a local magnetic field and work effectively as micro-fluxmeters similar to, e.g., SQUIDs but with an effective detection loop of only about a square micron. We have found that the spatial confinement of superconductivity in a small volume gives rise to dramatic changes in thermodynamic properties of mesoscopic superconductors.
