Abstract: Dry reforming of methane has gained significant interest over the years. A novel reforming technique with great potential is plasma technology. One of its drawbacks, however, is energy consumption. Therefore, we performed an extensive computational study, supported by experiments, aiming to identify the influence of the operating parameters (gas mixture, power, residence time and frequency) of a dielectric barrier discharge plasma on the conversion and energy efficiency, and to investigate which of these parameters lead to the most promising results and whether these are eventually sufficient for industrial implementation. The best results, in terms of both energy efficiency and conversion, are obtained at a specific energy input (SEI) of 100 J cm−3, a 1090 CH4CO2 ratio, 10 Hz, a residence time of 1 ms, resulting in a total conversion of 84% and an energy efficiency of 8.5%. In general, increasing the CO2 content in the gas mixture leads to a higher conversion and energy efficiency. The SEI couples the effect of the power and residence time, and increasing the SEI always results in a higher conversion, but somewhat lower energy efficiencies. The effect of the frequency is more complicated: we observed that the product of frequency (f) and residence time (τ), being a measure for the total number of micro-discharge filaments which the gas molecules experience when passing through the reactor, was critical. For most cases, a higher number of filaments yields higher values for conversion and energy efficiency. To benchmark our model predictions, we also give an overview of measured conversions and energy efficiencies reported in the literature, to indicate the potential for improvement compared to the state-of-the art. Finally, we identify the limitations as well as the benefits and future possibilities of plasma technology.

Abstract: A plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) route to Fe2O3-based materials on Al2O3(0001) single crystals at moderate growth temperatures (200-400 degrees C) is reported. The use of the fluorinated Fe(hfa)(2)TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate; TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) molecular precursor in Ar/O-2 plasmas enabled an in situ F-doping of iron oxide matrices, with a fluorine content tunable as a function of the adopted preparative conditions. Variations of the thermal energy supply enabled control of the system phase composition, resulting in gamma-Fe2O3 at 200 degrees C and alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures at higher deposition temperatures. Notably, at 400 degrees C the formation of highly oriented alpha-Fe2O3 nanocolumns characterized by an epitaxial relation with the Al2O3(0001) substrate was observed. Beside fluorine content, phase composition and nano-organization, even the system optical properties and, in particular, energy gap values, could be tailored by proper modifications of processing parameters.

Abstract: A new, single-step protocol for wrapping individual nanosized β-casein micelles with silica is presented. This biomolecule-friendly synthesis proceeds at low protein concentration at almost neutral pH, and makes use of sodium silicate instead of the common silicon alkoxides. This way, formation of potentially protein-denaturizing alcohols can be avoided. The pH of the citrate-buffered synthesis medium is close to the isoelectric point of β-casein, which favours micelle formation. A limited amount of sodium silicate is added to the protein micelle suspension, to form a thin silica coating around the β-casein micelles. The size distribution of the resulting proteinsilica structures was characterized using DLS and SAXS, as well as 1H NMR DOSY with a dedicated pulsed-field gradient cryo-probehead to cope with the low protein concentration. The degree of silica-condensation was investigated by 29Si MAS NMR, and the nanostructure was revealed by advanced electron microscopy techniques such as ESEM and HAADF-STEM. As indicated by the combined characterization results, a silica shell of 2 nm is formed around individual β-casein micelles giving rise to separate protein coresilica shell nanoparticles of 17 nm diameter. This alcohol-free method at mild temperature and pH is potentially suited for packing protein molecules into bio-compatible silica nanocapsules for a variety of applications in biosensing, therapeutic protein delivery and biocatalysis.

Abstract: Biomolecular self-assembly is an effective synthesis strategy for materials fabrication with unique structural complexity and properties. For the first time, we intergrate inner-particle mesoporosity in a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected macroporous TiO2 structure via the mediation of biomolecular self-assembly of the lipids and proteins from rape pollen coats and P123 to optimize the structure for high performance lithium storage. Benefitting from the hierarchically 3D interconnected macro-mesoporous structure with high surface area, small nanocrystallites and good electrolyte permeation, such unique porous structure demonstrates superior electrochemical performance, with high initial coulombic efficiency (94.4% at 1C) and a reversible discharge capacity of 161, 145, 127 and 97 mA h g-1 at 2, 5, 10 and 20C for 1000 cycles, with 79.3%, 89.9%, 90.1% and 87.4% capacity retention, respectively. Using SEM, TEM and HRTEM observations on the TiO2 materials before and after cycling, we verify that the inner-particle mesoporosity and the Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites formed during the cycling process in interconnected macroporous structure largely enhance the cycle life and rate performance. Our demonstration here offers opportunities towards developing and optimizing hierarchically porous structures for energy storage applications via biomolecular self-assembly.

Abstract: Pr2−xCexCuO4 (x = 0.05; 0.1; 0.15) samples were synthesized and systematically characterized towards application as a cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). High-temperature electrical conductivity, thermal expansion, and electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were examined. The electrical conductivity of Pr2−xCexCuO4 oxides demonstrates semiconducting behavior up to 900 °C. Small Ce-doping (2.5 at%) allows an increase in electrical conductivity from 100 to 130 S cm−1 in air at 500–800 °C. DFT calculations revealed that the density of states directly below the Fermi level, comprised mainly of Cu 3d and O 2p states, is significantly affected by atoms in rare earth positions, which might give an indication of a correlation between calculated electronic structures and measured conducting properties. Ce-doping in Pr2−xCexCuO4 slightly increases TEC from 11.9 × 10−6 K−1 for x = 0 to 14.2 × 10−6 K−1 for x = 0.15. Substitution of 2.5% of Pr atoms in Pr2CuO4 by Ce is effective to enhance the electrochemical performance of the material as a SOFC cathode in the ORR (ASR of Pr1.95Ce0.05CuO4 electrode applied on Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 electrolyte is 0.39 Ω cm2 at 750 °C in air). The peak power density achieved for the electrolyte-supported fuel cell with the Pr1.95Ce0.05CuO4 cathode is 150 mW cm−2 at 800 °C

Abstract: Doped Cr2O3 has been shown to be a p-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO). Its conductivity, however, is low. As for most p-type TCOs, the main problem is the high effective hole mass due to flat valence bands. We use first-principles methods to investigate whether one can increase the valence band dispersion (i.e. reduce the hole mass) by anion alloying with sulfur, while keeping the band gap large enough for transparency. The alloying concentrations considered are given by Cr(4)SxO(6-x), with x = 1-5. To be able to describe the electronic properties of these materials accurately, we first study Cr2O3, examining critically the accuracy of different density functionals and methods, including PBE, PBE+U, HSE06, as well as perturbative approaches within the GW approximation. Our results demonstrate that Cr4S2O4 has an optical band gap of 3.08 eV and an effective hole mass of 1.8 m(e). This suggests Cr4S2O4 as a new p-type TCO host candidate.

Abstract: The particle surface of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4−δ (LNMO), a Li-ion battery cathode material, has been modified by Ti cation doping through a hydrolysis–condensation reaction followed by annealing in oxygen. The effect of different annealing temperatures (500–850 °C) on the Ti distribution and electrochemical performance of the surface modified LNMO was investigated. Ti cations diffuse from the preformed amorphous ‘TiOx’ layer into the LNMO surface during annealing at 500 °C. This results in a 2–4 nm thick Ti-rich spinel surface having lower Mn and Ni content compared to the core of the LNMO particles, which was observed with scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with compositional EDX mapping. An increase in the annealing temperature promotes the formation of a Ti bulk doped LiNi(0.5−w)Mn(1.5+w)−tTitO4 phase and Ti-rich LiNi0.5Mn1.5−yTiyO4 segregates above 750 °C. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry indicates increasing Ni–Mn ordering with annealing temperature, for both bare and surface modified LNMO. Ti surface modified LNMO annealed at 500 °C shows a superior cyclic stability, coulombic efficiency and rate performance compared to bare LNMO annealed at 500 °C when cycled at 3.4–4.9 V vs. Li/Li+. The improvements are probably due to suppressed Ni and Mn dissolution with Ti surface doping.

Abstract: Diatoms are unicellular microalgae that self-assemble an intricate porous silica cell wall, called frustule. Diatom frustules possess a unique combination of physical and chemical properties (chemical inertness, high mechanical strength, large surface area, low density, good porosity and highly ordered features on the nano-to-micro scale) making diatom frustules suited for many nanotechnological applications. For most proposed applications the organic material covering the frustules needs to be removed. In this paper we investigate the effect of different frustule cleaning methods (drying, autoclavation, SDS/EDTA treatment, H2O2 treatment and HNO3 treatment) and subsequent heat treatment at different temperatures (105 °C, 350 °C, 550 °C and 750 °C) on the material characteristics of the diatom Pinnularia sp. Material characteristics under study are morphology, surface area, pore size, elemental composition and organic content. The cleaned Pinnularia frustules are subsequently investigated as adsorbents to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution.

Abstract: In this work, by performing first-principles calculations, we explore the effects of various atom impurities on the electronic and magnetic properties of single layers of C(6)N(6)and C6N8. Our results indicate that atom doping may significantly modify the electronic properties. Surprisingly, doping Cr into a holey site of C(6)N(6)monolayer was found to exhibit a narrow band gap of 125 meV upon compression strain, considering the spin-orbit coupling effect. Also, a C atom doped in C(6)N(8)monolayer shows semi-metal nature under compression strains larger than -2%. Our results propose that Mg or Ca doped into strained C(6)N(6)may exhibit small band gaps in the range of 10-30 meV. In addition, a magnetic-to-nonmagnetic phase transition can occur under large tensile strains in the Ca doped C(6)N(8)monolayer. Our results highlight the electronic properties and magnetism of C(6)N(6)and C(6)N(8)monolayers. Our results show that the electronic properties can be effectively modified by atom doping and mechanical strain, thereby offering new possibilities to tailor the electronic and magnetic properties of C(6)N(6)and C(6)N(8)carbon nitride monolayers.

Abstract: Using density functional theory, we investigate a novel two-dimensional silicon bismotide (SiBi) that has a layered GaSe-like crystal structure.Ab initiomolecular dynamic simulations and phonon dispersion calculations suggest its good thermal and dynamical stability. The SiBi monolayer is a semiconductor with a narrow indirect bandgap of 0.4 eV. Our results show that the indirect bandgap decreases as the number of layers increases, and when the number of layers is more than six layers, direct-to-indirect bandgap switching occurs. The SiBi bilayer is found to be very sensitive to an E-field. The bandgap monotonically decreases in response to uniaxial and biaxial compressive strain, and reaches 0.2 eV at 5%, while at 6%, the semiconductor becomes a metal. For both uniaxial and biaxial tensile strains, the material remains a semiconductor and indirect-to-direct bandgap transition occurs at a strain of 3%. Compared to a SiBi monolayer with a layer thickness of 4.89 angstrom, the bandgap decreases with either increasing or decreasing layer thickness, and at a thicknesses of 4.59 to 5.01 angstrom, the semiconductor-to-metal transition happens. In addition, under pressure, the semiconducting character of the SiBi bilayer with a 0.25 eV direct bandgap is preserved. Our results demonstrate that the SiBi nanosheet is a promising candidate for designing high-speed low-dissipation devices.

Abstract: We present KITE, a general purpose open-source tight-binding software for accurate real-space simulations of electronic structure and quantum transport properties of large-scale molecular and condensed systems with tens of billions of atomic orbitals (N similar to 10(10)). KITE's core is written in C++, with a versatile Python-based interface, and is fully optimized for shared memory multi-node CPU architectures, thus scalable, efficient and fast. At the core of KITE is a seamless spectral expansion of lattice Green's functions, which enables large-scale calculations of generic target functions with uniform convergence and fine control over energy resolution. Several functionalities are demonstrated, ranging from simulations of local density of states and photo-emission spectroscopy of disordered materials to large-scale computations of optical conductivity tensors and real-space wave-packet propagation in the presence of magneto-static fields and spin-orbit coupling. On-the-fly calculations of real-space Green's functions are carried out with an efficient domain decomposition technique, allowing KITE to achieve nearly ideal linear scaling in its multi-threading performance. Crystalline defects and disorder, including vacancies, adsorbates and charged impurity centres, can be easily set up with KITE's intuitive interface, paving the way to user-friendly large-scale quantum simulations of equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of molecules, disordered crystals and heterostructures subject to a variety of perturbations and external conditions.

Abstract: A method has been developed to determine the interstitial and precipitated oxygen concentration in highly doped n- and p-type silicon. 10-30-mu m-thin silicon samples in a mechanical stress-free state and without alteration of the thermal history are prepared and measured with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy at 5.5-6 K. The measured oxygen contents in the as-grown Si samples agree well with those obtained with gas fusion analysis. In the highly boron-doped samples, the interstitial oxygen can be determined down to 10(17) cm(-3). (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0034-6748(99)04909-6].

Abstract: Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable nanoscale particlelike objects that were discovered in 2009. Since that time, intense research interest in the field has led to the identification of numerous compounds that support skyrmions over a range of conditions spanning from cryogenic to room temperatures. Skyrmions can be set into motion under various types of driving, and the combination of their size, stability, and dynamics makes them ideal candidates for numerous applications. At the same time, skyrmions represent a new class of system in which the energy scales of the skyrmion-skyrmion interactions, sample disorder, temperature, and drive can compete. A growing body of work indicates that the static and dynamic states of skyrmions can be influenced strongly by pinning or disorder in the sample; thus, an understanding of such effects is essential for the eventual use of skyrmions in applications. The current state of knowledge regarding individual skyrmions and skyrmion assemblies interacting with quenched disorder or pinning is reviewed. The microscopic mechanisms for skyrmion pinning, including the repulsive and attractive interactions that can arise from impurities, grain boundaries, or nanostructures, are outlined. This is followed by descriptions of depinning phenomena, sliding states over disorder, the effect of pinning on the skyrmion Hall angle, the competition between thermal and pinning effects, the control of skyrmion motion using ordered potential landscapes such as one-or two-dimensional periodic asymmetric substrates, the creation of skyrmion diodes, and skyrmion ratchet effects. Highlighted are the distinctions arising from internal modes and the strong gyrotropic or Magnus forces that cause the dynamical states of skyrmions to differ from those of other systems with pinning, such as vortices in type-II superconductors, charge density waves, or colloidal particles. Throughout this review future directions and open questions related to the and in are also discussed.

Abstract: Background: Inhaled formulations using extrafine particles of long-acting beta(2)-agonists and corticosteroids were developed to optimize asthma treatment. Findings that these combinations reach and treat smaller airways more effectively are predominantly based on general non-specific outcomes with little information on regional characteristics. Objectives: This study aims to assess long-term effects of extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol on small airways of asthmatic patients using novel functional imaging methods. Methods: Twenty-four stable asthma patients were subdivided into three groups (steroid naive, n = 7; partially controlled, n = 6; well controlled, n = 11). Current treatment was switched to a fixed combination of extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol (Foster (R); Chiesi Pharmaceuticals, Parma, Italy). Patients underwent lung function evaluation and thorax high-resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) scan. Local airway resistance was obtained from computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Results: After 6 months, the entire population showed improvement in pre-bronchodilation imaging parameters, including small airway volume (p = 0.0007), resistance (p = 0.011), and asthma control score (p = 0.016). Changes in small airway volume correlated with changes in asthma control score (p = 0.004). Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (p = 0.044) and exhaled nitric oxide (p = 0.040) also improved. Functional imaging provided more detail and clinical relevance compared to lung function tests, especially in the well-controlled group where only functional imaging parameters showed significant improvement, while the correlation with asthma control score remained. Conclusions: Extrafine beclomethasone/formoterol results in a significant reduction of small airway obstruction, detectable by functional imaging (HRCT/CFD). Changes in imaging parameters correlated significantly with clinically relevant improvements. This indicates that functional imaging is a useful tool for sensitive assessment of changes in the respiratory system after asthma treatment. Copyright (C) 2013 S. Karger AG, Basel
