“Improvement of the oxidation stability and the mechanical properties of flexible graphite foil by boron oxide impregnation”. Savchenko DV, Serdan AA, Morozov VA, Van Tendeloo G, Ionov SG, New carbon materials 27, 12 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/S1872-5805(12)60001-8
Abstract: Flexible graphite foil produced by rolling expanded graphite impregnated with boron oxide was analyzed by laser mass spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetry. It was shown that the modification of the graphite foil by boron oxide increases the onset temperature of oxidation by ∼ 150 °C. Impregnation of less than 2 mass% boron oxide also increased the tensile strength of the materials. The observed improvement was attributed to the blocking of active sites by boron oxide, which is probably chemically bonded to the edges of graphene sheets in expanded graphite particles.

“Investigation of stacking disorder in Li2SnO3”. Tarakina NV, Denisova TA, Maksimova LG, Baklanova YV, Tyutyunnik AP, Berger IF, Zubkov VG, Van Tendeloo G, Zeitschrift für Kristallographie , 375 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1524/zksu.2009.0055
Abstract: A crystal structure investigation of the low temperature Li2SnO3 modification has been carried out. X-ray, neutron powder and electron diffraction data showed that this compound crystallizes in a monoclinic unit cell with parameters: a = 5.3033(2)Å, b = 9.1738(3)Å, c = 10.0195(2)Å, β ~ 100.042(2)º and has stacking disorder along the c-axis. Simulation of diffraction patterns with different stacking faults mainly reveal the presence of rotational stacking faults with a probability of about 40% .

Abstract: We report a microstructural and compositional study of a 90% Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 – 10% PbTiO3 ceramic sample. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed the presence of compositional ordered nano-domains (1 – 4 mn), observable in two specific orientations, [0 (1) over bar 1] and [1 1 (2) over bar]. However, the visibility and the ordering degree of the nano-domains on the HRTEM images are not at all obvious. Fourier filtering of the images clearly revealed the ordered domains. Antiphase boundaries lying in the (111) planes separate them, while (100) and (111) facets separate the ordered domains from the disordered matrix. Their shape is plate-like, not uniformly spread in the disordered matrix. Their average size varies in different regions of the sample, most probably due to a non-uniform distribution of Ti, as observed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. “Multi-functional copper oxide nanosystems for H2 sustainable production and sensing”. Gasparotto A, Barreca D, Fornasiero P, Gombac V, Lebedev O, Maccato C, Montini T, Tondello E, Van Tendeloo G, Comini E, Sberveglieri G, ECS transactions 25, 1169 (2009)
Abstract: This work focuses on the use of tailored copper oxide nanoarchitectures as multi-functional materials for the sustainable production of hydrogen and its on-line detection. An innovative copper(II) precursor, Cu(hfa)2TMEDA, was adopted in the CVD of CuxO (x=1,2) nanosystems under both O2 and O2+H2O atmospheres on Si(100) and Al2O3 substrates. A multi-technique characterization indicates that both the phase composition (from Cu2O to CuO) and morphology (from continuous films to entangled quasi-1D nanosystems) can be tailored by varying the growth temperature and reaction atmosphere. The obtained CuxO nanodeposits are active in the photocatalytic H2 production from aqueous solutions under UV-Vis irradiation and display interesting gas sensing performances towards hydrogen detection even at moderate temperatures.

“'Natural' and 'man-made' platelets in type-la diamonds”. Kiflawi I, Bruley J, Luyten W, Van Tendeloo G, Philosophical magazine: B: physics of condensed matter: electronic, optical and magnetic properties 78, 299 (1998). http://doi.org/10.1080/13642819808205733
Abstract: 'Natural' platelets are planar defects in {001} planes found in natural type-IaA/B diamonds. 'Man-made' platelets are platelets formed in the laboratory by annealing type-IaA diamonds at temperatures over 2500 degrees C. Careful study shows that the infrared (IR) spectra of the 'man-made' platelets are different from the IR spectra of 'natural' platelets. High-temperature (T greater than or equal to 2000 degrees C) annealing of platelets containing type-IaA/B diamonds modifies the IR absorption spectrum owing to the 'natural' platelets and makes it similar to the IR spectrum of the 'man-made' platelets. It is suggested that such high-temperature annealing changes the structure of the 'natural' platelets. The changes are too subtle to be detected by electron microscopy techniques. Topographic electron-energy-loss spectroscopy shows that platelets contain nitrogen at an average density of 0.7 atoms per a(0)(2); however, high-temperature annealing does not seem to affect the concentration of the nitrogen in the platelets.

“Nickel/carbon composite materials based on expanded graphite”. Afanasov IM, Lebedev OI, Kolozhvary BA, Smirnov AV, Van Tendeloo G, New carbon materials 26, 335 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1016/S1872-5805(11)60085-1
Abstract: Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction.
