Title Spherical core–shell alumina support particles for model platinum catalysts Type A1 Journal article
Year (down) 2021 Publication Nanoscale Abbreviated Journal Nanoscale
  Volume 13 Issue 7 Pages 4221-4232

Abstract γ- and δ-alumina are popular catalyst support materials. Using a hydrothermal synthesis method starting from aluminum nitrate and urea in diluted solution, spherical core–shell particles with a uniform particle size of about 1 μm were synthesized. Upon calcination at 1000 °C, the particles adopted a core–shell structure with a γ-alumina core and δ-alumina shell as evidenced by 2D and 3D electron microscopy and27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The spherical alumina particles were loaded with Pt nanoparticles with an average size below 1 nm using the strong electrostatic adsorption method. Electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed a homogeneous platinum dispersion over the alumina surface. These platinum loaded alumina spheres were used as a model catalyst for bifunctional catalysis. Physical mixtures of Pt/alumina spheres and spherical zeolite particles are equivalent to catalysts with platinum deposited on the zeolite itself facilitating the investigation of the catalyst components individually. The spherical alumina particles are very convenient supports for obtaining a homogeneous distribution of highly dispersed platinum nanoparticles. Obtaining such a small Pt particle size is challenging on other support materials such as zeolites. The here reported and well-characterized Pt/alumina spheres can be combined with any zeolite and used as a bifunctional model catalyst. This is an interesting strategy for the examination of the acid catalytic function without the interference of the supported platinum metal on the investigated acid material.

Abstract To unravel the effects of phonon confinement, the influence of size and morphology on the atomic vibrations is investigated in Sn nanoislands and cluster-assembled films. Nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is used to probe the phonon densities of states of the Sn nanostructures which show significant broadening of the features compared to bulk phonon behavior. Supported by ab initio calculations, the broadening is attributed to phonon scattering and can be described within the damped harmonic oscillator model. Contrary to the expectations based on previous research, the appearance of high-energy modes above the cutoff energy is not observed. From the thermodynamic properties extracted from the phonon densities of states, it was found that grain boundary Sn atoms are bound by weaker forces than bulk Sn atoms.

Title Collapse of the low temperature insulating state in Cr-doped V2O3 thin films Type A1 Journal article
Year (down) 2015 Publication Applied physics letters Abbreviated Journal Appl Phys Lett
  Volume 107 Issue 107 Pages 111904
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We have grown epitaxial Cr-doped V2O3 thin films with Cr concentrations between 0% and 20% on (0001)-Al2O3 by oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. For the highly doped samples (>3%), a regular and monotonous increase of the resistance with decreasing temperature is measured. Strikingly, in the low doping samples (between 1% and 3%), a collapse of the insulating state is observed with a reduction of the low temperature resistivity by up to 5 orders of magnitude. A vacuum annealing at high temperature of the films recovers the low temperature insulating state for doping levels below 3% and increases the room temperature resistivity towards the values of Cr-doped V2O3 single crystals. It is well-know that oxygen excess stabilizes a metallic state in V2O3 single crystals. Hence, we propose that Cr doping promotes oxygen excess in our films during deposition, leading to the collapse of the low temperature insulating state at low Cr concentrations. These results suggest that slightly Cr-doped V2O3 films can be interesting candidates for field effect devices. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Title Interfacial spin glass state and exchange bias in manganite bilayers with competing magnetic orders Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The magnetic properties of manganite bilayers composed of G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrMnO3 and double-exchange ferromagnetic (FM) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 are studied. A spin-glass state is observed as a result of competing magnetic orders and spin frustration at the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrMnO3 interface. The dependence of the irreversible temperature on the cooling magnetic field follows the Almeida-Thouless line. Although an ideal G-type AFM SrMnO3 is featured with a compensated spin configuration, the bilayers exhibit exchange bias below the spin glass freezing temperature, which is much lower than the Néel temperature of SMO, indicating that the exchange bias is strongly correlated with the spin glass state. The results indicate that the spin frustration that originates from the competition between the AFM super-exchange and the FM double-exchange interactions can induce a strong magnetic anisotropy at the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrMnO3 interface.

Title Unexpected optical response of single ZnO nanowires probed using controllable electrical contacts Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Relying on combined electron-beam lithography and lift-off methods Au/Ti bilayer electrical contacts were attached to individual ZnO nanowires (NWs) that were grown by a vapor phase deposition method. Reliable Schottky-type as well as ohmic contacts were obtained depending on whether or not an ion milling process was used. The response of the ZnO NWs to ultraviolet light was found to be sensitive to the type of contacts. The intrinsic electronic properties of the ZnO NWs were studied in a field-effect transistor configuration. The transfer characteristics, including gate threshold voltage, hysteresis and operational mode, were demonstrated to unexpectedly respond to visible light. The origin of this effect could be accounted for by the presence of point defects in the ZnO NWs.

Abstract Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements.
