Abstract: Various modes of transmission electron microscopy including aberration corrected imaging were used in order to unravel the fundamental mechanisms controlling the formation of growth twins and the evolution of twin boundaries under mechanical and hydrogen loading modes in nanocrystalline (nc) palladium thin films. The latter were produced by electron-beam evaporation and sputter deposition and subjected to uniaxial tensile deformation as well as hydriding/dehydriding cycles. The results show that the twins form by dissociation of grain boundaries. The coherency of Σ3{111} coherent twin boundaries considerably decreases with deformation due to dislocation/twin boundary interactions while Σ3{112} incoherent twin boundaries dissociate under hydrogen cycling into two-phase boundaries bounding a new and unstable 9R phase. The effect of these elementary mechanisms on the macroscopic behavior of the palladium films is discussed and compared to recent experimental and simulation works in the literature. The results provide insightful information to guide the production of well-controlled population of growth twins in high stacking fault energy nc metallic thin films. The results also indicate directions for further enhancement of the mechanical properties of palladium films as needed for instance in palladium-based membranes in hydrogen applications.

Abstract: This paper reports on the incorporation of three commercial fluorescent dyes, i.e., rhodamine 6G, fluorescein, and fluorescent brightener 184, in plasma coatings, by utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor, and the subsequent monitoring of the coatings homogeneity based on the emitted fluorescent light. The plasma coatings are qualitatively characterized with fluorescence microscopy, UVvis spectroscopy and profilometry for the determination of the coating thickness. The emitted fluorescent light of the coating correlates to the amount of dye per area, and deviations of these factors can hence be observed by monitoring the intensity of this light. This allows monitoring the homogeneity of the plasma coatings in a fast and simple way, without making major adjustments to the process.

Abstract: Chrome yellows, a class of pigments frequently used by painters of the Impressionism and Post-impressionism period, are known for their different chemical stability; the latter depends on the chemical composition (PbCrO4, PbCr1-xSxO4) and crystalline structure (monoclinic or orthorhombic) of the material. The possibility to distinguish among different forms of this pigment is therefore relevant in order to extend knowledge on the corresponding degradation process that is observed on several original paintings. For this purpose, three paintings conserved at the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam) were analyzed using noninvasive Raman spectroscopy, while equivalent investigations employing bench-top instrumentation were performed to obtain information from micro-samples originating from these works of art. In each painting, the chrome yellow was identified either as monoclinic PbCrO4 or in the form of monoclinic PbCr1-xSxO4 (x<0.25) or S-rich orthorhombic PbCr1-xSxO4 (x similar to 0.5). Our ability to make this fairly subtle distinction is based on a Raman study of several oil paint model samples made up of monoclinic and/or orthorhombic crystalline forms of PbCrO4 and PbCr1-xSxO4 (0.1x0.8). These paints were studied using several excitation wavelengths (namely 785.0, 532.0, 514.5, and 488nm). Because of the absence of the resonance Raman effect, which strongly enhances the chromate symmetric stretching band, and the absence of any laser-induced photodecomposition, it is advantageous to acquire data at 785.0nm. The band-shape and the position of the chromate bending modes proved to be more sensitive to the solid solution composition and crystalline structure than the stretching modes and can be used as distinctive spectral markers to discriminate among the different chrome yellow forms that are present. Abstract: Electrochemical oscillations accompanying the formation of anodic silica have been shown in the past to be correlated with rather abrupt changes in the mechanical stress state of the silica film, commonly associated with some kind of fracture or porosification of the oxide. To advance the understanding on the origin of such oscillations in fluoride-free electrolytes, we have revisited a seminal experiment reported by Lehmann almost two decades ago. We thereby demonstrate that the oscillations are not stress-induced, and do not originate from a morphological transformation of the oxide in the course of anodisation. Alternatively, the mechanical features accompanying the oscillations can be explained by a partial relaxation of the field-induced electrostrictive stress. Furthermore, our observations suggest that the oscillation mechanism more likely results from a periodic depolarisation of the anodic silica.

Abstract: Many experiments have revealed that the surfaces of graphene and graphene-like structures can play an active role as a host surface for clusterization of transition metal atoms. Motivated by these observations, we investigate theoretically the adsorption, diffusion and magnetic properties of Pt clusters on three different two-dimensional atomic crystals using first principles density functional theory. We found that monolayers of graphene, molybdenum disulfide (1H-MoS2) and tantalum disulfide (1T-TaS2) provide different nucleation characteristics for Pt cluster formation. At low temperatures, while the bridge site is the most favorable site where the growth of a Pt cluster starts on graphene, top-Mo and top-Ta sites are preferred on 1H-MoS2 and 1T-TaS2, respectively. Ground state structures and magnetic properties of Pt-n clusters (n= 2,3,4) on three different monolayer crystal structures are obtained. We found that the formation of Pt-2 dimer and a triangle-shaped Pt-3 cluster perpendicular to the surface are favored over the three different surfaces. While bent rhombus shaped Pt-4 is formed on graphene, the formation of tetrahedral shaped clusters are more favorable on 1H-MoS2 and 1T-TaS2. Our study of the formation of Pt-n clusters on three different monolayers provides a gateway for further exploration of nanocluster formations on various surfaces.

Abstract: Charge and polarization modulations in Fe3O4 are controlled by taking advantage of interfacial strain effects. The feasibility of oxidation state control by strain modification is demonstrated and it is shown that this approach offers a stable configuration at room temperature. Direct evidence of how a local strain field changes the atomic coordination and introduces atomic displacements leading to polarization of Fe ions is presented.

Abstract: Sunlight-driven hydrogen production via photoreforming of aqueous solutions containing renewable compounds is an attractive option for sustainable energy generation with reduced carbon footprint. Nevertheless, the absence of photocatalysts combining high efficiency and stability upon solar light activation has up to date strongly hindered the development of this technology. Herein, two scarcely investigated iron(III) oxide polymorphs, β- and ε-Fe2O3, possessing a remarkable activity in sunlight-activated H2 generation from aqueous solutions of renewable oxygenates (i.e., ethanol, glycerol, glucose) are reported. For β-Fe2O3 and ε-Fe2O3, H2 production rates up to 225 and 125 mmol h−1 m−2 are obtained, with significantly superior performances with respect to the commonly investigated α-Fe2O3.
