Abstract Transitions between different multivortex states and transitions between multivortex states and giant vortex states are observed in mesoscopic superconducting disks using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method. These results are compared to theoretical calculations within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We find a good qualitative agreement between the theoretical and experimental results, when we assume that a small defect is present near the center of the experimental sample. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.   Title Dynamics of the superconducting condensate in the presence of a magnetic field : channelling of vortices in superconducting strips at high currents Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Physica: C : superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
  Volume 404 Issue 1-4 Pages 400-404
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable (J(c2)(1)) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state (J(c1) < J(c2)). The current J(c2) decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while J(c1) exhibits a maximum at H*. For sufficient large magnetic fields the hysteresis disappears and J(c1) = J(c2) = Jc. In this high magnetic field region and for currents close to Jc the voltage appears as a result of the motion of separate vortices. With increasing current the moving vortices form, channels' with suppressed order parameter along which the vortices can move very fast. This leads to a sharp increase of the voltage. These 'channels' resemble in some respect the phase slip lines which occur at zero magnetic field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Stable and metastable states in a mesoscopic superconducting “eight” loop in presence of an external magnetic field Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Physica: C : superconductivity Abbreviated Journal Physica C
  Volume 400 Issue 3-4 Pages 165-170
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly.   Title Stability of CH3 molecules trapped on hydrogenated sites of graphene Type A1 Journal article
Year 2014 Publication Physica: B : condensed matter Abbreviated Journal Physica B
  Volume 455 Issue Pages 60-65
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study the effect of a hydrogen atom on the thermal stability of a trapped CH3 molecule on graphene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the hydrogen-molecule interaction, enhanced pinning of the CH3 molecule is observed when it is positioned adjacent to the graphene site with the hydrogen atom. We discuss the formation process of such a stable configuration, which originates from different adhesion and migration energies of the hydrogen atom and the CH3 molecule. We also studied the effect of the CH3-H configuration on the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons using first principles density-functional calculations. We found that the formation of the CH3-H structure results in extra features in the transmission spectrum due to the formation of strongly localized states, which are absent when the CH3 molecule is trapped on pristine graphene. Our findings will be useful in exploiting gas sensing properties of graphene, especially for selective detection of individual molecules. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Here we discuss a relevant generalization of the GL theory, focusing on the underlying intraband-pairing approximation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract We present a theoretical study on optical properties such as optical conductance and light transmission coefficient for mono- and multi-layer graphene systems with AB- and ABC-stacking. Considering an air/graphene/dielectric-water structure, the optical coefficients for those graphene systems are examined and compared. The universal optical conductance sigma(N)(0)=N pi e(2)/(2h) for N layer graphene systems in the visible region is verified. For N 3 layer graphene, the mini-gap induced absorption edges can be observed in odd layers AB-stacked multilayer graphene, where the number and position of the absorption edges are decided by the layers number N. Meanwhile, we can observe the optical absorption windows for those graphene systems in the infrared to terahertz bandwidth (0.2-150 THz). The absorption window is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption channels. We find that the depth and width of the absorption window can be tuned not only via varying temperature and electron density but also by changing the number of graphene layers and the stacking order. These theoretical findings demonstrate that mono- and multi-layer graphene systems can be applied as frequency tunable optoelectronic devices working in infrared to terahertz bandwidth.   Abstract We investigate the adsorption process of small molecules on graphene through first-principles calculations and show the presence of two main charge transfer mechanisms. Which mechanism is the dominant one depends on the magnetic properties of the adsorbing molecules. We explain these mechanisms through the density of states of the system and the molecular orbitals of the adsorbates, and demonstrate the possible difficulties in calculating the charge transfer from first principles between a graphene sheet and a molecule. Our results are in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract The effect of a metallic gate on the bound states of a shallow donor located near the gate is studied. We calculate the energy spectrum as a function of the distance between the metallic gate and the donor and find an anti-crossing behavior in the energy levels for certain distances. We show how a transverse electric field can tune the average position of the electron with respect to the metallic gate and the impurity.

Abstract We studied the coupled impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire (NW), within the effective mass approximation and including the effect of the dielectric mismatch, by using finite element method. Bonding and anti-bonding states are found and their energies converge with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependence of the binding energy on the wire radius R and the distance di between the two impurities is investigated, and we compare it with the result of a freestanding NW that contains a single impurity.

Title Ferromagnetism in stacked bilayers of Pd/C60 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2014 Publication Journal of magnetism and magnetic materials Abbreviated Journal J Magn Magn Mater
  Volume 349 Issue Pages 128-134
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We provide experimental evidence for the existence of ferromagnetism in bilayers of Pd/C-60 which is supported by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The observed ferromagnetism is surprising as C-60 and Pd films are both non-ferromagnetic in the non-interacting limit. Magnetization (M) versus applied field (H) data acquired at different temperatures (T) show magnetic hysteresis with typical coercive fields (H-c) on the order of 50 Oe. From the temperature-dependent magnetization M(T) we extract a Curie temperature (T-c >= 550 K) using Bloch-like power law extrapolations to high temperatures. Using DFT calculations we investigated all plausible scenarios for the interaction between the C-60 molecules and the Pd slabs, Pd single atoms and Pd clusters. DFT shows that while the C-60 molecules are nonmagnetic, Pd films have a degenerate ground state that subject to a weak perturbation, can become ferromagnetic. Calculations also show that the interaction of C-60 molecules with excess Pd atoms and with sharp edges of a Pd slab is the most likely configuration that render the system ferromagnetic Interestingly, the calculated charge transfer (0.016 e per surface Pd atom, 0.064 e per Pd for intimate contact region) between C-60 and Pd does not appear to play an important role.   Abstract A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p-type III-V DMS, the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile and localized holes near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied p-orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. T-C estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with experiments on (Ga,Mn)As. The model is also applicable to the p-doped (Ga,Mn)P system. The magnetic ordering in n-type (Ga,Mn)N is due to exchange between the electrons localized on the levels lying deep in the forbidden energy gap. This mechanism is even closer to the original Zener mechanism. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
