“Tailoring dirac plasmons via anisotropic dielectric environment by design”. Tao ZH, Dong HM, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, Van Duppen B, Physical Review Applied 16, 054030 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVAPPLIED.16.054030
Abstract: Dirac plasmons in a two-dimensional (2D) crystal are strongly affected by the dielectric properties of the environment, due to interaction of their electric field lines with the surrounding medium. Using graphene as a 2D reservoir of free carriers, one can engineer a material configuration that provides an anisotropic environment to the plasmons. In this work, we discuss the physical properties of Dirac plasmons in graphene surrounded by an arbitrary anisotropic dielectric and exemplify how h-BN-based heterostructures can be designed to bear the required anisotropic characteristics. We calculate how dielec-tric anisotropy impacts the spatial propagation of the plasmons and find that an anisotropy-induced plasmon mode emerges, together with a damping pathway, that stem from the out-of-plane off-diagonal elements in the dielectric tensor. Furthermore, we find that one can create hyperbolic plasmons by inher-iting the dielectric hyperbolicity of the designed material environment. Strong control over plasmon propagation patterns can be realized in a similar manner. Finally, we show that in this way one can also control the polarization of the light-matter excitations that constitute the plasmon. Taken together, our results promote the design of the dielectric environment as an effective path to tailor the plasmonic response of graphene on the nanoscopic level.

“Terahertz magneto-optical properties of graphene hydrodynamic electron liquid”. Man LF, Xu W, Xiao YM, Wen H, Ding L, Van Duppen B, Peeters FM, Physical Review B 104, 125420 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.104.125420
Abstract: The discovery of the hydrodynamic electron liquid (HEL) in graphene [D. Bandurin et al., Science 351, 1055 (2016) and J. Crossno et al., Science 351, 1058 (2016)] has marked the birth of the solid-state HEL which can be probed near room temperature in a table-top setup. Here we examine the terahertz (THz) magneto-optical (MO) properties of a graphene HEL. Considering the case where the magnetic length l(B) = root h/eB is comparable to the mean-free path l(ee) for electron-electron interaction in graphene, the MO conductivities are obtained by taking a momentum balance equation approach on the basis of the Boltzmann equation. We find that when l(B) similar to l(ee), the viscous effect in a HEL can weaken significantly the THz MO effects such as cyclotron resonance and Faraday rotation. The upper hybrid and cyclotron resonance magnetoplasmon modes omega(+/-) are also obtained through the RPA dielectric function. The magnetoplasmons of graphene HEL at large wave-vector regime are affected by the viscous effect, and results in red-shifts of the magnetoplasmon frequencies. We predict that the viscosity in graphene HEL can affect strongly the magneto-optical and magnetoplasmonic properties, which can be verified experimentally.

“Ultra-thin structures of manganese fluorides : conversion from manganese dichalcogenides by fluorination”. Baskurt M, Nair RR, Peeters FM, Sahin H, Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics 23, 10218 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1039/D1CP00293G
Abstract: In this study, it is predicted by density functional theory calculations that graphene-like novel ultra-thin phases of manganese fluoride crystals, that have nonlayered structures in their bulk form, can be stabilized by fluorination of manganese dichalcogenide crystals. First, it is shown that substitution of fluorine atoms with chalcogens in the manganese dichalcogenide host lattice is favorable. Among possible crystal formations, three stable ultra-thin structures of manganese fluoride, 1H-MnF2, 1T-MnF2 and MnF3, are found to be stable by total energy optimization calculations. In addition, phonon calculations and Raman activity analysis reveal that predicted novel single-layers are dynamically stable crystal structures displaying distinctive characteristic peaks in their vibrational spectrum enabling experimental determination of the corresponding phases. Differing from 1H-MnF2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) large gap semiconductor, 1T-MnF2 and MnF3 single-layers are semiconductors with ferromagnetic (FM) ground state.

“Anisotropic and tunable optical conductivity of a two-dimensional semi-Dirac system in the presence of elliptically polarized radiation”. Zhang HY, Xiao YM, N Li Q, Ding L, Van Duppen B, Xu W, Peeters FM, Physical review B 105, 115423 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.105.115423
Abstract: We investigate the effect of ellipticity ratio of the polarized radiation field on optoelectronic properties of a two-dimensional (2D) semi-Dirac (SD) system. The optical conductivity is calculated within the energy balance equation approach derived from the semiclassical Boltzmann equation. We find that there exists the anisotropic optical absorption induced via both the intra-and interband electronic transition channels in the perpendicular xx and yy directions. Furthermore, we examine the effects of the ellipticity ratio, the temperature, the carrier density, and the band-gap parameter on the optical conductivity of the 2D SD system placed in transverse and vertical directions, respectively. It is shown that the ellipticity ratio, temperature, carrier density, and band-gap parameter can play the important roles in tuning the strength, peak position, and shape of the optical conductivity spectrum. The results obtained from this study indicate that the 2D SD system can be a promising anisotropic and tunable optical and optoelectronic material for applications in innovative 2D optical and optoelectronic devices, which are active in the infrared and terahertz bandwidths.

“Arresting aqueous swelling of layered graphene-oxide membranes with H3O+ and OH- ions”. Gogoi A, Neyts EC, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, ACS applied materials and interfaces 14, 34946 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACSAMI.2C05926
Abstract: Over the past decade, graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a promising membrane material with superior separation performance and intriguing mechanical/chemical stability. However, its practical implementation remains very challenging primarily because of its undesirable swelling in an aqueous environment. Here, we demonstrated that dissociation of water molecules into H3O+ and OH- ions inside the interlayer gallery of a layered GO membrane can strongly affect its stability and performance. We reveal that H3O+ and OH- ions form clusters inside the GO laminates that impede the permeance of water and salt ions through the membrane. Dynamics of those clusters is sensitive to an external ac electric field, which can be used to tailor the membrane performance. The presence of H3O+ and OH- ions also leads to increased stability of the hydrogen bond (H-bond) network among the water molecules and the GO layers, which further reduces water permeance through the membrane, while crucially imparting stability to the layered GO membrane against undesirable swelling. “Effect of edge groups on the electronic transport properties of tetrapodal diazatriptycene molecule”. Berdiyorov GR, Peeters FM, Hamoudi H, Physica. E: Low-dimensional systems and nanostructures 141, 115212 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.PHYSE.2022.115212
Abstract: We conduct ballistic transport calculations to study the electronic transport properties of diazatriptycene molecule which can be self-assembled on metallic surfaces with uniform coverage and upright orientation of the functional head group. Due to its structural asymmetry, the molecule shows a clear current rectification, where the level of the rectification depends on the nature of the head group. For example, current rectification can be increased by more than a factor of 2 by anchoring the molecules to the electrode by CN functional group or introducing insulating CH2 group between the thiol end group and the adjacent phenyl ring. Our findings show the possibility of creating self-assembled monolayer of DAT molecules with controlled electronic transport properties through functionalization of the head group.

“Effect of halogenation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic and alkanethiolate molecules”. Berdiyorov GR, Peeters FM, Hamoudi H, Physica. E: Low-dimensional systems and nanostructures 144, 115428 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.PHYSE.2022.115428
Abstract: Quantum transport calculations are conducted using nonequilibrium Green's functional formalism to study the effect of halogenation on the electronic transport properties of aromatic S-(C6H5)(2)X and alkanethiolate S-(CH2)(11)X molecules (with X = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) sandwiched between gold electrodes. In terms of conductance, both molecules show the same dependence on the halogen terminal groups despite their different electronic nature. For example, fluorination results in a reduction of the current by almost an order of magnitude, whereas iodine substitution leads to larger current as compared to the reference system (i.e. hydrogen termination). Regarding the asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristics, halogenation reduces the rectification level for the aromatic molecule with the smallest asymmetry for iodine termination. However, in the case of alkanethiolate molecule, halogen substitution increases the current rectification except for fluorination. A physical explanation of these results is obtained from the analysis of the behavior of the density of states, transmission spectra and transmission eigenstates. These findings are of practical importance in exploring the potential of halogenation for creating functional molecular self-assemblies on metallic substrates.

“Anisotropic superconductivity and vortex dynamics in magnetically coupled F/S and F/S/F hybrids”. Karapetrov G, Belkin A, Iavarone M, Fedor J, Novosad V, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, Journal of superconductivity and novel magnetism 24, 905 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1007/s10948-010-0880-z
Abstract: Magnetically coupled superconductorferromagnet hybrids offer advanced routes for nanoscale control of superconductivity. Magnetotransport characteristics and scanning tunneling microscopy images of vortex structures in superconductorferromagnet hybrids reveal rich superconducting phase diagrams. Focusing on a particular combination of a ferromagnet with a well-ordered periodic magnetic domain structure with alternating out-of-plane component of magnetization, and a small coherence length superconductor, we find directed nucleation of superconductivity above the domain wall boundaries. We show that near the superconductor-normal state phase boundary the superconductivity is localized in narrow mesoscopic channels. In order to explore the Abrikosov flux line ordering in F/S hybrids, we use a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and GinzburgLandau simulations. The magnetic stripe domain structure induces periodic local magnetic induction in the superconductor, creating a series of pinninganti-pinning channels for externally added magnetic flux quanta. Such laterally confined Abrikosov vortices form quasi-1D arrays (chains). The transitions between multichain states occur through propagation of kinks at the intermediate fields. At high fields we show that the system becomes nonlinear due to a change in both the number of vortices and the confining potential. In F/S/F hybrids we demonstrate the evolution of the anisotropic conductivity in the superconductor that is magnetically coupled with two adjacent ferromagnetic layers. Stripe magnetic domain structures in both F-layers are aligned under each other, resulting in a directional superconducting order parameter in the superconducting layer. The conductance anisotropy strongly depends on the period of the magnetic domains and the strength of the local magnetization. The anisotropic conductivity of up to three orders of magnitude can be achieved with a spatial critical temperature modulation of 5% of T c. Induced anisotropic properties in the F/S and F/S/F hybrids have a potential for future application in switching and nonvolatile memory elements operating at low temperatures.

“Combined molecular dynamics: continuum study of phase transitions in bulk metals under ultrashort pulsed laser irradiation”. Wendelen W, Dzhurakhalov AA, Peeters FM, Bogaerts A, The journal of physical chemistry: C : nanomaterials and interfaces 114, 5652 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1021/jp907385n
Abstract: The phase transition processes induced by ultrashort, 100 fs pulsed laser irradiation of Au, Cu, and Ni are studied by means of a combined atomistic-continuum approach. A moderately low absorbed laser fluence range, from 200 to 600 J/m2 is considered to study phase transitions by means of a local and a nonlocal order parameter. At low laser fluences, the occurrence of layer-by-layer evaporation has been observed, which suggests a direct solid to vapor transition. The calculated amount of molten material remains very limited under the conditions studied, especially for Ni. Therefore, our results show that a kinetic equation that describes a direct solid to vapor transition might be the best approach to model laser-induced phase transitions by continuum models. Furthermore, the results provide more insight into the applicability of analytical superheating theories that were implemented in continuum models and help the understanding of nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Abstract: Cyclotron resonance (CR) of the electrons accumulated at sheets with heavy Si doping in InSb were observed using far infrared radiation. The angular dependence of the CR follows closely the 1/cos theta behaviour with some small deviations at high angles attributed to coupling between subbands. From the effective mass of the lowest subband, which is found to be 0.027m(o), the bottom of the lowest subband was determined to lie 125 meV below the Fermi level.

“Derivatization and diffusive motion of molecular fullerenes : ab initio and atomistic simulations”. Berdiyorov G, Harrabi K, Mehmood U, Peeters FM, Tabet N, Zhang J, Hussein IA, McLachlan MA, Journal of applied physics 118, 025101 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.4923352
Abstract: Using first principles density functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of derivatization on the electronic and transport properties of C-60 fullerene. As a typical example, we consider [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), which forms one of the most efficient organic photovoltaic materials in combination with electron donating polymers. Extra peaks are observed in the density of states (DOS) due to the formation of new electronic states localized at/near the attached molecule. Despite such peculiar behavior in the DOS of an isolated molecule, derivatization does not have a pronounced effect on the electronic transport properties of the fullerene molecular junctions. Both C-60 and PCBM show the same response to finite voltage biasing with new features in the transmission spectrum due to voltage induced delocalization of some electronic states. We also study the diffusive motion of molecular fullerenes in ethanol solvent and inside poly(3-hexylthiophene) lamella using reactive molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the mobility of the fullerene reduces considerably due to derivatization; the diffusion coefficient of C-60 is an order of magnitude larger than the one for PCBM. Abstract: Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave functions on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states. Abstract: The exciton states in a strained (In,Ga)As/GaAs nanocup are theoretically determined. We explore how the nanocup bottom thickness (t) affects the magnetic field dependence of the exciton energy. Strain distribution is computed by the continuum mechanical model under the approximation of isotropic elasticity. The exciton wave functions are expanded into products of the electron and hole envelope functions. For small t, the exciton ground state has zero orbital momentum and exhibits small oscillations of the second derivative when the magnetic field increases. When t approaches the value of the cup height, however, the exciton levels exhibit angular momentum transitions, whose behavior is similar to that for type-II quantum dots. Small oscillations of the oscillator strength for exciton recombination are found when the magnetic field increases. An increase in thickness of the nanocup bottom has only a small effect on those oscillations for the optically active exciton states, but the exciton ground state becomes dark when the magnetic field increases. Hence, the results of our calculations show that an increase in thickness of the nanocup bottom transforms the exciton ground energy level dependence on magnetic field from the one characteristic of type-I rings to the one characteristic of type-II dots.

Abstract: Thermal fluctuations of the order parameter in an ultrathin triangular-shaped superconducting structure are studied near Tc, in zero applied field. We find that the order parameter is prone to much larger fluctuations in the corners of the structure as compared to its interior. This geometry-induced localization of thermal fluctuations is attributed to the fact that condensate confinement in the corners is characterized by a lower effective dimensionality, which favors stronger fluctuations.

Abstract: We consider classical two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb clusters consisting of two species containing five particles with charge q1 and five with charge q2, respectively. Using Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigated the ground state configurations as well as radial and angular displacements of particles as a function of temperature and their dependence on the ratio q = q2/q1. We found new configurations and a new multi-step melting behavior for q sufficiently different from the uniform charge limit q = 1.

Abstract: Based on the metastable electron-pair energy band in a two-dimensional (2D) periodic potential obtained previously by Hai and Castelano [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 26, 115502 (2014)], we present in this work a Hamiltonian of many electrons consisting of single electrons and electron pairs in the 2D system. The electron-pair states are metastable of energies higher than those of the single-electron states at low electron density. We assume two different scenarios for the single-electron band. When it is considered as the lowest conduction band of a crystal, we compare the obtained Hamiltonian with the phenomenological model Hamiltonian of a boson-fermion mixture proposed by Friedberg and Lee [Phys. Rev. B 40, 6745 (1989)]. Single-electron-electron-pair and electron-pair-electron-pair interaction terms appear in our Hamiltonian and the interaction potentials can be determined from the electron-electron Coulomb interactions. When we consider the single-electron band as the highest valence band of a crystal, we show that holes in this valence band are important for stabilization of the electron-pair states in the system.

The transmission and reflection coefficients for a single ring, obtained analytically, help obtain the conductance through a chain of rings as a function of the strength a, the field B, and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. Due to destructive spin interferences caused by the Rashba coupling the chain can be totally opaque for certain ranges of k the width of which depends on values of a and B. Outside these ranges the conductance oscillates with high values between e(2)/h and 2e(2)/h. The effect of a periodic modulation of a or B on the conductance gaps is investigated. A periodic, square-wave conductance pattern, pertinent to the development of the spin transistor, results within wide stripes in the parameter space spanned by k, a, and B. Finite temperatures smoothen the square-wave profile of the conductance but do not alter its periodic character.
