Abstract We use kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate current fluctuations in boundary driven generalized exclusion processes, in different dimensions. Simulation results are in full agreement with predictions based on the additivity principle and the macroscopic fluctuation theory. The current statistics are independent of the shape of the contacts with the reservoirs, provided they are macroscopic in size. In general, the current distribution depends on the spatial dimension. For the special cases of the symmetric simple exclusion process and the zero-range process, the current statistics are the same for all spatial dimensions.

Abstract Vortex loops are generated by the inhomogeneous stray field of a magnetic dipole on top of a current-carrying mesoscopic superconductor. Cutting and recombination processes unfold under the applied drive, resulting in periodic voltage oscillations across the sample. We show that a direct and detectable consequence of the cutting and recombination of these vortex loops in the present setup is the onset of vortices at surfaces where they were absent prior to the application of the external current. The nonlinear dynamics of vortex loops is studied within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to describe the profound three-dimensional features of their time evolution.

Abstract The energy spectrum of a one-electron quantum dot doped with a single magnetic ion is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. The allowed cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions are obtained together with their oscillator strength as a function of the magnetic field, the position of the magnetic ion, and the quantum dot confinement strength. With increasing magnetic field a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition is found, which results in clear signatures in the CR absorption. It leads to discontinuities in the transition energies and the oscillator strengths and to an increase in the number of allowed transitions.

Abstract The cyclotron resonance energies, the corresponding oscillator strengths, and the cyclotron absorption spectrum for trilayer graphene are calculated for both ABA and ABC stacking. A gate potential across the stacked layers leads to (1) a reduction of the transition energies, (2) a lifting of the degeneracy of the zero Landau level, and (3) the removal of the electron-hole symmetry.

Abstract We study the rectification of vortex motion in an asymmetric ring channel in a Corbino setup. With an applied ac current, the motion of vortices in the channel is rectified by the asymmetric potential and induces a dc net flow. The net flow in such a system strongly depends on vortex density, and we distinguish “single-vortex'' rectification regime (for low density, when each vortex is rectified individually) determined by the potential-energy landscape inside each cell of the channel and ”multi-vortex'', or "collective'', rectification (high density case) when the interaction between vortices becomes important. Abstract Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for the density of states D(E) and Fermi energy E-F of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a weak and periodic unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation and of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength, oscillates with B and gives rise to Weiss oscillations in D(E), E-F and the transport coefficients. When both electric and magnetic modulations are present the position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.

Abstract The density of states (DOS) and the optical conductivity of graphene is calculated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and where scattering on charged and short-range impurities is included. The standard Kubo formula is employed where the self-energy induced by impurity scattering and the Green's function are calculated self-consistently including inter-Landau level (LL) coupling and screening effects. It is found that the scattering from those two types of impurities results in a symmetric LL broadening and asymmetric inter-LL coupling renormalizes the LL positions to lower energy. The peak position and intensity of the magneto-optical conductivity depends on the filling factor and the broadened DOS. Good agreement is found with recent cyclotron resonance measurements.

Abstract On the basis of the momentum-balance equation derived from the Boltzmann equation in which electron interactions with impurities and acoustic and optic phonons are included, we examine the dependence of the resistivity in graphene on temperature and electron density. Simple analytical expressions for the different contributions to the resistivity are obtained. Our results reproduce recent experimental findings and we are able to understand the different temperature dependence of the resistivity for low and high density samples.

Abstract Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are considered as promising candidates for next generation of electronic and optoelectronic devices. To make use of these materials, for instance in field effect transistor applications, it is mandatory to know the detailed properties of contacts of such TMDs with metal electrodes. Here, we investigate the role of the contact structure on the electronic and transport properties of metal-MoSe2 interfaces. Two different contact types, namely face and edge contacts, are studied. We consider both low (Sc) and high (Au) work function metals in order to thoroughly elucidate the role of the metal work function and the type of metal. First principles plane wave calculations and transport calculations based on nonequilibrium Green's function formalism reveal that the contact type has a large impact on the electronic and transport properties of metal-MoSe2 interfaces. For the Sc electrode, the Schottky barrier heights are around 0.25 eV for face contact and bigger than 0.6 eV for edge contact. For the Au case, we calculate very similar barrier heights for both contact types with an average value of 0.5 eV. Furthermore, while the face contact is found to be highly advantageous as compared to the edge contact for the Sc electrode, the latter contact becomes a better choice for the Au electrode. Our findings provide guidelines for the fabrication of TMD-based devices.

Abstract The influence of the geometry of a thin superconducting sample on the penetration of the magnetic field lines and the arrangement of vortices are investigated theoretically. We compare the vortex state of superconducting disks, squares, and triangles with the same surface area having nonzero thickness. The coupled nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved self-consistently and the important demagnetization effects are taken into account. We calculate and compare quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization, the Cooper-pair density, the magnetic field distribution, and the superconducting current density for the three geometries. For given vorticity the vortex lattice is different for the three geometries, i.e., it tries to adapt to the geometry of the sample. This also influences the stability range of the different vortex states. For certain magnetic field ranges we found a coexistence of a giant vortex placed in the center and single vortices towards the corners of the sample. The H-T phase diagram is obtained for the three investigated geometries and we found that the critical magnetic field is substantially enhanced for the triangle geometry.

Abstract We studied the coupled impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire (NW), within the effective mass approximation and including the effect of the dielectric mismatch, by using finite element method. Bonding and anti-bonding states are found and their energies converge with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependence of the binding energy on the wire radius R and the distance di between the two impurities is investigated, and we compare it with the result of a freestanding NW that contains a single impurity.

Abstract Coupled shallow impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire and in a semiconductor nanowire surrounded by a metallic gate are studied within the effective-mass approximation. Bonding and antibonding states are found due to the coupling of the two impurities, and their energy converges with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependences of the binding energy on the wire radius R, the distance di between the two impurities, and the impurity radial position in the nanowire are examined.

Title Different length scales for order parameters in two-gap superconductors : extended Ginzburg-Landau theory Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Using the Ginzburg-Landau theory extended to the next-to-leading order, we determine numerically the healing lengths of the two order parameters at the two-gap superconductor/normal metal interface. We demonstrate on several examples that those can be different even in the strict domain of applicability of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. This justifies the use of this theory to describe relevant physics of two-gap superconductors, distinguishing them from their single-gap counterparts. The calculational degree of complexity increases only slightly with respect to the conventional Ginzburg-Landau expansion, thus the extended Ginzburg-Landau model remains numerically far less demanding compared to the full microscopic approaches.

Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We evaluate the self-diffusion and transport diffusion of interacting particles in a discrete geometry consisting of a linear chain of cavities, with interactions within a cavity described by a free-energy function. Exact analytical expressions are obtained in the absence of correlations, showing that the self-diffusion can exceed the transport diffusion if the free-energy function is concave. The effect of correlations is elucidated by comparison with numerical results. Quantitative agreement is obtained with recent experimental data for diffusion in a nanoporous zeolitic imidazolate framework material, ZIF-8.
