Title Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy of HfO2 gate stacks : a study based on first-principles modeling Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Applied physics letters Abbreviated Journal Appl Phys Lett

Abstract A first-principles modeling approach is used to investigate the vibrational properties of HfO2. The calculated phonon density of states is compared to experimental results obtained from inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) of various metal-oxide-semiconductor devices with HfO2 gate stacks. This comparison provides deep insights into the nature of the signatures of the complicated IETS spectra and provides valuable structural information about the gate stack, such as the possible presence of oxygen vacancies in jet-vapour deposited HfO2. Important structural differences between the interface of atomic-layer or molecular-beam deposited HfO2 and the Si substrate are also revealed.

Title Influence of amorphous phase separation on the crystallization behavior of glass-ceramics in the BaO-TiO2-SiO2 system Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The possible role of a prior amorphous phase separation on the subsequent crystallization has been the topic of vigorous debates over the last decades and has not yet been clarified, especially regarding the role of the interfaces created by the phase separation. This study proposes to focus on the interplay between a prior amorphous phase separation and the crystallization of fresnoite in the BaO-TiO2-SiO2 system. The crystallization behavior of a non-stoichiometric composition inside the miscibility gap (called APS) is compared with the stoichiometric composition (called FRES) and a non-stoichiometric composition outside the miscibility gap (called NoAPS). The crystallization mechanisms are compared using differential thermal analysis (DTA) by calculating the Avrami parameters and the activation energies as a function of the particle size. The DTA study shows that the two non-stoichiometric compositions exhibit a pronounced surface crystallization behavior whereas FRES undergoes bulk nucleation. This is supported by a multi-scale microstructure characterization. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the amorphous phase separation and the associated interfaces do not play any significant role in the nucleation step. Moreover, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and local orientation measurements show that the growth of the dendrites is not hindered by the SiO2-rich droplets. The final stage of crystallization of APS is tentatively explained by two composition effects that must be further investigated: the viscosity effect and the formation of a eutectic.   Abstract It is known that the neutral image tone of a developed photographic film becomes brownish when the thickness of the original silver halide tabular crystals is reduced. We investigate by electron microscopy to what extent the silver filament structure has changed and how it induces the shift in image tone. Therefore, two samples of AgBr {111} tabular crystals with average thicknesses of 160 nm and 90 nm respectively, are compared. It is shown that the dimensions and defect structure of the filaments are comparable, but that the 90 nm crystals result in a more widely spaced structure, which explains the shift in image tone on a qualitative level. The influence of the addition of an image toner, i.e., phenylmercaptotetrazole, on the filament structure is also investigated. An even more open filament structure of longer, but smaller filaments was observed.

Abstract In dc magnetrons the electrons emitted from the cathode may return there due to the applied magnetic field. When that happens, they can be recaptured or reflected back into the discharge, depending on the value of the reflection coefficient (RC). A 2d3v (two-dimensional in coordinate and three-dimensional in velocity space) particle-in-cellMonte Carlo model, including an external circuit, is developed to determine the role of the electron recapture in the discharge processes. The detailed discharge structure as a function of RC for two pressures (4 and 25mtorr) is studied. The importance of electron recapture is clearly manifested, especially at low pressures. The results indicate that the discharge characteristics are dramatically changed with varying RC between 0 and 1. Thus, the electron recapture at the cathode appears to be a significant mechanism in magnetron discharges and RC a very important parameter in their correct quantitative description that should be dealt with cautiously.

Abstract In this letter, we investigate the effect of various levels of nitrogen impurity on the electrical performance of an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge in helium. We illustrate the different current profiles that are obtained, which exhibit one or more discharge pulses per half cycle and evaluate their performance in ionizing the discharge and dissipating the power. It is shown that flat and broad current profiles perform the best in ionizing the discharge and use the least amount of power per generated charged particle.

Abstract Particles produced by previous laser shots may have significant influence on the analytical signal in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma (LA-ICP) spectrometry if they remain close to the position of laser sampling. The effects of these particles on the laser-induced breakdown event are demonstrated in several ways. LIBS-experiments were conducted in an ablation cell at atmospheric conditions in argon or air applying a dual-pulse arrangement with orthogonal pre-pulse, i.e., plasma breakdown in a gas generated by a focussed laser beam parallel and close to the sample surface followed by a delayed crossing laser pulse in orthogonal direction which actually ablates material from the sample and produces the LIBS plasma. The optical emission of the LIBS plasma as well as the absorption of the pre-pulse laser was measured. In the presence of particles in the focus of the pre-pulse laser, the plasma breakdown is affected and more energy of the pre-pulse laser is absorbed than without particles. As a result, the analyte line emission from the LIBS plasma of the second laser is enhanced. It is assumed that the enhancement is not only due to an increase of mass ablated by the second laser but also to better atomization and excitation conditions favored by a reduced gas density in the pre-pulse plasma. Higher laser pulse frequencies increase the probability of particle-laser interaction and, therefore, reduce the shot-to-shot line intensity variation as compared to lower particle loadings in the cell. Additional experiments using an aerosol chamber were performed to further quantify the laser absorption by the plasma in dependence on time both with and without the presence of particles. The overall implication of laser-particle interactions for LIBS and LA-ICP-MS/OES are discussed.

Abstract The effects of the mold preheating and the silicon content of ductile iron on the percentage of carbides, graphite nodule counts and shrinkage volume were investigated. The results showed that the percentage of carbides and the shrinkage volume decreased when the mold preheating increased. The ductile iron with the carbon equivalent of 4.45% and the silicon content of 2.5% without any porosity defects was achieved when the mold preheating was 450 °C. Increasing the silicon content in the range of 2.1%3.3% led to the increase in graphite nodule count and graphite size and the decrease in percentage of carbides. It is due to the increase in induced expansion pressure during the graphite formation with the increasing of silicon content. The suitable condition for casting a sound product of ductile iron without the riser at the mold preheating temperature of 300 °C is the silicon content of 3.3% and carbon equivalent of 4.7%.

Abstract Transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B, of a weak one-dimensional (1D) periodic potential modulation V(x) = V(0)cos(Kx), and of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of strength a. For V(x) = 0 the SOI mixes the up and down spin states of neighboring Landau levels into two, unequally spaced energy branches. For V(x) not equal 0 these levels broaden into bands and their bandwidths oscillate with B. The n-th level bandwidth of each series vanishes at different values of B. Relative to the ID-modulated 2DEG without SOI and one flat-band condition, there are two flat-band conditions that depend on a and the transport coefficients can change considerably. For weak a the Weiss oscillations show beating patterns while for strong a the Shubnikov-de Haas ones axe split in two.

Abstract Solving the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations self-consistently, we investigate the influence of a triangular surface defect (i.e. pacman shaped sample) on the vortex transitions in mesoscopic superconducting disks. Depending on the size of the defect, vortices may enter/leave one by one or in pairs.

Abstract We present a combined study of experimental and computational work for a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) used for CH4 conversion into H2. More specifically, we investigated the influence of N2 as an impurity (150,000 ppm) and as additive gas (199%) on the CH4 conversion and H2 yield. For this purpose, a zero-dimensional chemical kinetics model is applied to study the plasma chemistry. The calculated conversions and yields for various gas mixing ratios are compared to the obtained experimental values, and good agreement is achieved. The study reveals the significance of the View the MathML source and View the MathML source metastable states for the CH4 conversion into H2, based on a kinetic analysis of the reaction chemistry.
