Title 3D FIB/SEM study of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in Ni-Ti alloys with different thermal-mechanical histories Type P1 Proceeding
  Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue (up) Pages 02004,1-02004,6
Keywords P1 Proceeding; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The three-dimensional size, morphology and distribution of Ni4Ti3 precipitates growing in binary Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys have been investigated via a slice view procedure in a Dual-Beam FIB/SEM system, in order to better stress-free Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy with all four variants of precipitates and a compressed Ni51Ti49 alloy with aligned precipitates in one family were studied. The Ni4Ti3 precipitates reach a volume fraction of 9.6% in the reconstructed region of the stress-free alloy and 4.3% in the compressed one. In both cases, the mean volume, specific surface area, sphericity and aspect ratio of the precipitates are calculated and the Pair Distribution Functions of the precipitates are obtained. It is shown that most precipitates in the stress-free sample grow larger and have a more lenticular shape, while those in the compressed sample are more cylindrical. Deviations from these ideal shapes reveal internal steps in the stress-free sample and lamellae formation in the compressed one.

Abstract Ni4Ti3 precipitates play an important role in the shape memory and superelastic behaviour of thermo-mechanically treated Ni-Ti material. The 3D morphology and distribution of such precipitates with lenticular shape and rhombohedral atomic structure in the austenitic B2 matrix of a binary Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloy has been elucidated via a slice view procedure in a Dual-Beam FIB/SEM system. With the sequence of cross-section SE images obtained from the SEM, a 3D reconstruction has been achieved after proper alignment and image processing, from which both qualitative and quantitative analysis can be performed. Careful imaging is needed to ensure that all variants of the precipitates are observed with equal probability, regardless sample orientation. Moreover, due to the weak contrast of the precipitates, proper imaging conditions need to be selected to allow for semi-automated image treatment. Finally, a volume ratio of 10.2% for the Ni4Ti3 precipitates could be calculated, summed over all variants, which yields a net composition of Ni50.36Ti49.64 for the matrix, leading to an increase of 113 degrees for the martensitic start temperature Ms. Also, the expected relative orientation of the different variants of the precipitates could be confirmed. In the near future, other quantitative measures on the distribution of the precipitates can be expected.

Title 3D strain fields surrounding Ni4Ti3: direct measurement and correlation with the R-phase Type P1 Proceeding
  Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue (up) Pages 02032,1-02032,6
Keywords P1 Proceeding; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Strain fields introduced by coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates in austenitic Ni-Ti are believed to be a possible origin of why the R-phase transformation is introduced as an extra step before transforming to the B19'. The presence of this strain field was already confirmed in the past by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques and measured quantitatively by high resolution TEM (HRTEM). This time the geometrical phase method is applied on HRTEM micrographs to measure the full 3D strain tensor of the strain fields. Since each atomic resolution micrograph only results in a 2D measurement of the strain, observations in two different zone orientations are combined to retrieve the 3 x 3 strain tensor. In this work observations in a [1-1 1](B2) and [1 0-1](B2) zone orientation are used and this in case of precipitates with a diameter of around 50nm. In a next step the measured strain tensor is compared to the calculated eigenstrain of the R-phase in reference to the B2 matrix. This comparison shows that the introduced strain is very similar to the eigenstrain of one R-phase variant. Since for both structures, Ni4Ti3 and R-phase, four orientation variants are possible, each variant of the R-phase is thus able to accommodate the strain field of one of the Ni4Ti3 variants.

Abstract Two different kinds of experimental approaches yielding three-dimensional structural information on metastable semi-coherent precipitates are demonstrated. By combining high-resolution images from two independent viewing directions a full description of the strain field surrounding a nano-sized Ni4Ti3 precipitate in Ni-Ti can be obtained. The principal axes and strains correlate well with the transformation strain of the observed R-phase transformation close to the precipitate. Using a slice-and-view procedure in a FIB/SEM dual-beam instrument, a three-dimensional voxel dataset is produced from which morphological and distributional information on the same precipitates can be obtained yielding new insight into the particular transformation paths of these alloys, relevant for their functional behaviour.

Abstract Nanocrystalline palladium thin films deposited by electron-beam evaporation and deformed by on-chip tensile testing reveal a surprisingly large strain hardening capacity when considering the small similar to 25 nm grain size. The as-grown films contain several coherent single and multifold twin boundaries. The coherency of the twin boundaries considerably decreases with deformation due to dislocation/twin boundary interactions. These reactions are described based on a detailed analysis of the number and the type of dislocations located at the twin boundaries using high-resolution TEM, including aberration corrected microscopy. Sessile Frank dislocations were observed at the twin/matrix interfaces, explaining the loss of the TB coherency due to the Burgers vector pointing out of the twinning plane. Grain boundary mediated processes were excluded as a mechanism dominating the plastic deformation based on the investigation of the grain size distribution as well as the crystallographic texture using Automated Crystallographic Orientation Indexation TEM. Other factors influencing the plastic deformation such as impurities and the presence of a native passivation oxide layer at the surface of the films were investigated using analytical TEM. The twin boundaries observed in the present work partly explain the high strain hardening capacity by providing both increasing resistance to dislocation motion with deformation and a source for dislocation multiplication.   Abstract The beta '' precipitates in a peak-aged Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy were measured with an average composition of 28.6Al-38.7Mg-26.5Si-5.17Cu (at.%) using atom probe tomography. High-angle annular dark-field observations revealed that Cu incompletely substitutes for the Mg-1 and Si-3 columns, preferentially for one column in each pair of Si-3. Cu-free Si columns form a parallelogram-shaped network that constitutes the basis of subsequent precipitates in the system, with a = 0.37 nm, b = 0.38 nm, gamma = 113 degrees and c = 0.405 nm.   Abstract Glass treated on its surface with silver compounds and an aluminosilicate, such as ochre or clay, at higher temperatures (between 550 and 650 °C) accepts a wide variety of a yellow colour. It is the aim of this study to investigate the parameters of the manufacturing process affecting the final colour of silver stained glass and to correlate them with the final colour and colour intensity. Therefore, defined mixtures of ochre and a silver compound (AgCl, AgNO3, Ag2SO4, Ag3PO4, Ag2O) were prepared and applied on soda-lime glass. The firing process was modified within the range from 563 to 630 °C and glass samples were analysed after treatment with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as well as ion beam analysis (IBA) with an external beam. Within the scope of IBA simultaneous measurements using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE), and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) were carried out in order to obtain the thickness of the Ag-rich surface layer and the depth distribution of Ag. By means of TEM the microstructure of the silver particles was visualised. XRF results show that the lowest amount of Ag could be detected on glass samples treated with silver stain mixtures containing AgCl and Ag2O. A low kiln temperature (e.g. 563 °C) results in a higher silver concentration at the surface and lower penetration depths. Furthermore, the results obtained with SEM/EDX at cross-sections of the glass samples could be confirmed by PIXE, PIGE, RBS, and TEM.

Abstract This study discusses rational reproduction of liquid immiscibility in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system. While a ternary assessment requires sub-binary descriptions in the same thermodynamic model, the related sub-binary systems BaO-SiO2, BaO-TiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 liquid and solid phases have been evaluated using different thermodynamic models in the literature. In this study, BaO-SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 were assessed using the Ionic Two Sublattice model (I2SL) based on experimental data from the literature. BaO-TiO2 was already assessed using this model. Binary descriptions developed were then used for the assessment of liquid immiscibility in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system. Ternary interaction parameters were found necessary for rational reproduction of the new ternary experimental data gathered in the present work. The model parameters for each system were evaluated using a CAPLHAD approach. A set of parameters is proposed. They show good agreement between the calculated and experimental equilibrium liquidus, liquid immiscibility and thermochemical properties in the BaO-SiO2-TiO2 system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.   Abstract Defects in AgG tabular crystals with {111} surfaces are characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and their influence on the growth process is discussed. In the tabular crystals, twins parallel to the tabular face as well as dislocations along different directions are observed. The twins induce the tabular growth, while the dislocations do not influence the morphology. In 10 to 30% of the crystals that have been characterised, thickness growth is observed and it is shown that in all cases twins on other planes than the tabular ones are present. Two configurations occur more frequently and are analysed in detail. For the first group, twins parallel to the tabular face as well as a microtwin along a non-parallel {111} plane and ending inside the crystal are present. In the crystals of the second group only one extra non-parallel twin occurs giving rise to a bicrystal built up by a tetrahedral shaped part and a flat triangular or trapezoidal part. More complex twin configurations give rise to various, less characteristic morphologies.
