Year 2004 Publication International journal of modern physics: B: condensed matter physics, statistical physics, applied physics T2 – 16th International Conference on High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor, Physics, AUG 02-06, 2004, Florida State Univ, NHMFL, Tallahassee, FL Abbreviated Journal Int J Mod Phys B

Abstract Small numbers N < 5 of two-dimensional Coulomb-interacting electrons trapped in a parabolic potential placed in a perpendicular magnetic field are investigated. The reduced wave function of this system, which is obtained by fixing the positions of N-1 electrons, exhibits strong correlations between the electrons and the zeros. These zeros axe often called vortices. An exact-diagonalization scheme is used to obtain the wave functions and the results are compared with results obtained from the recently proposed rotating electron molecule (REM) theory. We find that the vortices gather around the fixed electrons and repel each other, which is to a much lesser extend so for the REM results.

Title Structure and microstructure of epitaxial Sr4Fe6O13-\delta films on SrTiO3 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Chemistry and materials Abbreviated Journal Chem Mater

Abstract The crystal structure and the microstructure of epitaxial Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta thin films grown on a single-crystal SrTiO3 substrate by PLD have been investigated. A combination of electron diffraction and high-resolution microscopy allows us to refine the structure and to identify an incommensurate modulation in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films. The incommensurate structure (q = alphaa(m)* approximate to 0.39alpha(m)*, superspace group Xmmm(alpha00)0s0) can be interpreted as an oxygen-deficient modification in the Fe2O2.5 double layers. Moreover, it is shown that the experimentally determined a component of the modulation can be used consistently to estimate the local oxygen content in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films. The compound composition can therefore be described as Sr4Fe6O12+2alpha and the value alpha = 0.39 corresponds to a Sr4Fe6O12.78 composition. The misfit stress along the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta/SrTiO3 interface is accommodated via both elastic deformation and inelastic mechanisms (misfit dislocations and 90degrees rotation twins). The present results also suggest the existence of SrFeO3 perovskite in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films.

Abstract Electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to investigate the bonding of plasma deposited carbon films. The experimental conditions include the use of a specific collection angle for which the shape of the spectra is free of the orientation dependency usually encountered in graphite due to its anisotropic structure. The first quantification process of the energy loss near-edge structure was performed by a standard fit of the collected spectrum, corrected for background and multiple scattering, with three Gaussian functions followed by a comparison with the graphite spectrum obtained under equivalent experimental conditions. In a second approach a fitting model directly incorporating the background subtraction and multiple scattering removal was applied. The final numerical results are interpreted in view of the deposition conditions of the films and the actual fitting procedure with the related choice of parameters.

Abstract A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p-type III-V DMS, the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile and localized holes near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied p-orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. T-C estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with experiments on (Ga,Mn)As. The model is also applicable to the p-doped (Ga,Mn)P system. The magnetic ordering in n-type (Ga,Mn)N is due to exchange between the electrons localized on the levels lying deep in the forbidden energy gap. This mechanism is even closer to the original Zener mechanism. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract The chemical composition, as determined by electron probe X-ray microanalysis of a series of ca. 100 archaeological glass fragments, excavated at the Raversijde site (Belgium) is discussed. In the 15th-16th century, Raversijde was a flourishing fishermen town located on the shore of the North Sea, close to the city of Ostend. As a consequence of several battles that were fought in its vicinity, the site was abandoned in the 16th century and was not occupied since then. It is one of the rare archaeological sites in Europe that contains a significant amount of information on the daily life inside a small but affluent medieval community. A comparison of the chemical composition of fragments of vessels and window glass encountered in Raversijde to those found in urban centres in Belgium and to literature date on German and French archaeological finds shows that glass made with wood ash dominates. Usually, it concerns artifacts with a predominantly utilitarian use. A few objects made with sodic (i.e., Na-rich) glass were also encountered, likely to have been imported from Venice during the 15th century or in later periods from an urban centre such as Antwerp, where Facon-de-Venice glass manufacturing activities were established near the start of the 16th century.   Abstract Metamorphic buffers (M-buffers) consisting of graded InAlAs or bulk InP were employed for the production of InP-based epiwafers on GaAs substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The graded InAlAs is the standard for production metamorphic high electron mobility transistors (M-HEMTs), while the bulk InP offers superior thermal properties for higher current density circuits. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the two M-buffers showed different relaxation mechanisms. The graded InAlAs gave a cross-hatched pattern with nearly full relaxation and very effective dislocation filtering, while the bulk InP had a uniform isotropic surface with dislocations propagating further up towards the active layers. Both types of M-buffers had atomic force microscopy root-mean-square roughness values around 2030 Å. The Hall transport properties of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer, and a baseline HEMT grown lattice matched on InP, both had room-temperature mobilities >10 000 cm2/V s, while the M-HEMT on the InP M-buffer showed a decrease to 9000 cm2/V  s. Similarly, the dc parameters of a double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer were much closer to the baseline heterojunction bipolar transistor than a DHBT grown on the InP M-buffer. A high breakdown voltage of 11.3 V was achieved on an M-DHBT with the InAlAs M-buffer. We speculate that the degradation in device characteristics on the InP M-buffer was related to the incomplete dislocation filtering.

Abstract This paper aims to give an overview of the technique of energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM). It explains the basic principles of the technique and points to the relevant literature for more detailed issues. Experimental examples are given to show the power of EFTEM to study the chemical composition of nanoscale samples in materials science. Advanced EFTEM applications like imaging spectroscopy and EFTEM tomography are briefly discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract The engineering, construction, performance and running costs of a catalytic flue gas cleaning component in the low dust area of a municipal waste incinerator is discussed. For this purpose, the case study of a Flemish incineration plant is presented, covering the history, the design procedure of the catalyst, relevant process data and the financial aspects. A reliable PCDD/F-destruction by means of oxidation by the catalyst to typical values of 0.001 ng TEQ/Nm3 has been demonstrated. At the same time, NOx− and CO-emissions are reduced by 90% and 20% to about 50 mg/Nm3 and below 10 mg/Nm3, respectively.
